Hi Lizzie,

you invited me to the midmifery
club, and I realised that we also had CDH in
common.

At her 6 week check, our GP picked up that Abby had
a clicky hip.

I carried her transversly
inside me, and when she came out she was like a little
banana - jaundiced and bent over to one side.

At
three weeks old I spotted that she had a lump in her
neck (sternocleidomastoid tumor or wry neck) - where
the muscle has become swollen. That righted itself at
about 3 months. The poor little thing could only move
her head to the one side.

Anyhow, at 5 months
she had the op, and was in a double hip spicca for 8
weeks. Nappies were fun!!! Stuffing cotton wool
everywhere I could to stop things leaking up the
plaster.

I did read that transverse babies are more likely
to have hip problems, and that the neck thing is
also associated with CDH.

I think that all is
well now - she's too active to sit really still enough
for the specialist to examine her. X-rays show that
the hip joint is more in place, although the left (I
think!) socket is still smaller than the right one. It's
really hard to see at the moment as the bones have still
a lot of cartilidge which doesn't show on the
x-ray.

Conch xxx
