Hi
My daughter Catriona had an open reduction (following two weeks in traction) &
wore a hip spica for 3 months afterwards. She was 10 months old when she went
into the first spica & had the third one removed last Monday. She has now been
fitted with a hip abduction brace which she has to wear all of the time, except
for nappy changes & bathing, for the next month then she is to be reassessed.
She coped really well with the traction & hip spicas. She is also doing well
with the brace. We still can't believe how well she has coped with it all - she
went back to nursery a week after having the first hip spica put on & the staff
at the Nursery did a great job of improvising with the buggies etc there.
As parents coping with the hip spica seems daunting at first but very quickly it
all becomes normal. They are quite heavy when they are in plaster & I know that
some people have found a hippy chick hip seat useful - I certainly wished
towards the end of the third month that we had got one as we both felt that our
backs were starting to feel the strain. Buggies, car seats etc can't really be
bought in advance as it all depends on the angle that the hip spica is set at.
We were lucky in that the OT department at the hospital provided a bean bag & a
hip spica table which was a god send - ask what they can provide even if it
proves to be of no use at least you've tried it & haven't spent any money.
The car seat we used was a Britax Club Class Extra, we got an extra long crotch
strap from Britax which they provide for £5.
I wish you all the best - I didn't believe it when I was told that it wouldn't
be as bad as I imagined it was going to be but it honestly hasn't been. It takes
a bit of getting used to & a bit of improvisation but you get there & the time
passes by.

Subject: [Clicky Hips Club] New Member - Twins Alister and Nathan
Hi, I'm a new member and thought I'd let you all know what are
situation is. We have twin boys Alister and Nathan who will be 10
months old on Saturday. Both have CDH.
Nathan was a breech baby so we were sent for the usual tests. His
right socket was very shallow so they put him in a Pavlik Harness.
After 16 weeks they decided this wasn't working and wanted to do an
arhtorogram to see what was going on. In the meantime they decided
to check Alister as well and decided although not as bad his right
hip was a little shallow.
The boys both had arthorgrams done three weeks ago. Alister does
have cartilage so the have put him into a Hewson brace and hope this
should sort things out in about 3 months. Nathan however is going
to need an operation to sort his out, which we have been told they
will not do until he is one. We have been referred to the John
Ratcliffe at Oxford for this treatment and are awaiting an
appointment.
Nathan is free from harnesses/braces at the moment which is good, he
is however starting to roll over and sit aided and I am a bit
concerned that this will cause him extreme frustration once he has
had the operation and is in plaster. Has anyone had experience of
this?
We are taking each day as it comes and I think we are hoping Ok. We
had to get a new car seat for Alister when he was put in his brace
because he was too wide. The pushchair has become a bit of a
problem as of course we need a twin. At the moment we have borrowed
a tandem which gives Alister enough room in the front, but we will
have a problem should they both end up in braces/plaster at the same
time. Advice greatly appreciated.
