Just to update everyone, a week ago my daughter, Samantha was
diagnosed with bilateral developmental hip dysplasia.
At her 4 month checkup, our pediatrician found a right "hip click."
They sent her for an x-ray as a precaution but it came back normal.
The pediatrician expected her to grow out of it. At her 6 month
checkup, they found the click was still there. They referred us to
a pediatric orthopedist.
Samantha has full range of motion, her legs are VERY active and she
shows no sign of pain, etc.
The orthopedist took an x-ray and measured a 35 in her right hip and
a 32 in the left hip on that x-ray. During review of the 4 month x-
ray, she found that Samantha measured a 33 in her right hip and a 29
in her left hip. (this didn't make sense since the 4 month x-ray
came back normal. I have a copy of the x-ray report and the doctor
states that her hips are negative!)
The doctor ordered her to wear the rhino cruiser brace for 20 hours
a day for 6-12 months. She said I could remove it for 4 hours daily
to place her in the car seat, bathe, swim, play, etc.
We went to get our Rhino brace on Monday. The doctor said she will
need to wear it a minimum of 6 months for 20 hours a day but we will
reevaluate in 4 months with an x-ray. She said Samantha's case is
moderate to severe.
On Friday, we went for a second opinion at Miami Children's
Hospital. The pediatric orthopedist reviewed the x-rays that were
previously taken and let us know that he wanted to take his own x-
rays. After reviewing the x-rays, he let us know that Samantha
measured a 28 on her right and a 25 on her left, well within normal
limits. In other words, in his opinion, she does not have DDH! He
let said to remove the brace and return in 2 months for another x-
ray. When I asked how the previous doctor could have been wrong, he
replied that sometimes people are over eager to diagnose and treat
to avoid future legal problems. He questioned the integrity of the
x-ray she took as it appeared she was twisted. In the doctor's
notes she stated that Samantha was twisted but came to the decision
that she was probably worse in her right and better in her left.
Don't get me wrong, this makes me very happy but I am reluctant to
celebrate as I am very confused! I am not sure what to do now. I
have a consult scheduled for Tuesday with my pediatrician and have
another appointment at another pediatric orthopedist for mid-June.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Any advice would be
greatly appreciated!
