Oops! Sorry - forgot to mention what the consultant said (sorry to go on about
us, but soo proud of my little one at the moment!). Apparently, in his words,
the hip is looking 'fantastic'. He said there is a very thick cover over the
femur, and he wrote on his notes 'large acetabular epiphysis', which I
understand is crucial in the development of a normal acetabulum. I know we've
still got six weeks in plaster, followed by a lot more time when things can go
wrong, but we're happier bunnies right now.
Take care,
B&A xxx

Subject: Re: [Clicky Hips Club] Car Seats for Hip Spica babies!
Hi Alison,
I know what you mean! When Amy was 4 months old, she was put into a Pavlik
harness, then went onto the spica (with an 8 week break in between). But I've
kept the harness, just so that I can put her back into it if she gets too
active! (Only kidding! Can't wait for her to be running around all over the
place).
The cast change was fab yesterday, thanks. She was a little angel again, and
was chatting, singing and laughing within 20 minutes of me picking her up in the
recovery room. Within about 30 minutes, she was tucking into a large bottle of
milk, and she's managed to keep all of her food down. So we're very relieved.
In terms of Ella's weight in the cast, I think Sara has mentioned the
Hippychick seat - I've got one of these too (got mine from Daisy and Tom, but
same price of £35 - or they have a website - think it's www.hippychick.com, but
not too sure), and it's fab. To be honest, I seem to have developed muscles so I
don't use it as much as I could, but it is very handy and you can really feel
the difference to your back!
Hope your search for the perfect car seat goes well. Everything seems to
really settle down once you know they can be mobile again.
Take care.
Love,
Barbara & Amy xxx

Hi Barbara & Amy
Thanks for your advice re the car seat, I think we have it sorted now, we're
going to look at a Britax Club Class Extra tomorrow and I've ordered the
extension straps from Britax!!
Ella is Ok in her puschair too with a a bit of padding, she even looks quite
comfy and she can look round so she's happy!! She seems to be coping OK with
her cast although she does seem a little bit more "clingy", mind'st you it is
her first week, I'm sure she'll get better, the worst thing I've found is the
weight of her she was heavy before but now...... my back is certainly
suffering!!!!
Hope everything goes fine tomorrow with the change of cast, before you know
it she'll be running around like any other child and then the fun will start!!!
at least with the cast on you know where they are!!!!!
Take care, lots of luck
luv Alison & Ella XXX

Hi.
Amy is now 10 months old, and had an adductor tenotomy, closed reduction
and hip spica fitted 6 weeks ago (changing it tomorrow!! Yipppeee!!! Half way
through!!) We're using a Britax Elite car seat, which is fab - and we've found
that the crotch strap is well long enough (although we have an order form for an
extension strap, too - call Britax on 01264 386034 - option 4 on a touch-tone
phone for customer services). The guy at customer services told me that the
crotch strap is only for the Elite and the Trio (although what the difference
is, I can't tell!).
We also have a Cossatto (Babies R Us own brand, I think) Toronto
pushchair, which is fab too cos with a cushion behind her, she can sit up and
see around her.
Sorry for short reply - breakfast time. Hope everything settles down for
you and your little one very soon. Life is still lots of fun in a spica, believe
me!!
Take care,

Subject: [Clicky Hips Club] Car Seats for Hip Spica babies!
Hi there, my name is Alison and I am mum to 8 month old Ella who has
just come home from hospital after having a closed reduction and a
hip spica cast fitted. Has anyone got any suggestions regarding
what car seats that are available, are suitable or adaptable for use
with a hip spica as we are having real problems and the hospital and
occupational therapy unit seem to offer no solutions. I have a
Britax Eclipse seat but the straps seem to be a problem as they are
not long enough, I have heard that maybe Britax can supply straps
but not sure if these are available for only selected models? Any
advise or if in fact anyone in the yorkshire area has any equipment
they no longer require that they would be willing to loan on to me
then please please let me know, I would be grateful. Thanks for
listening to me, best of luck to you all, Alison XX
