Hi Alison
Emily was aged 7 months when she had her open reduction and had just about
learnt to sit up. Within weeks of being in her cast she was crawling (i.e.
dragging her self along with her arms) and it eventually got to the stage where
I had to run to catch up with her!! She was casted for 7 months until she was
14 months old and then she started walking at about 22 months. She turned 3 in
September and is walking, running and climbing all over the place. At her 6
monthly check-up in May the surgeon mentioned doing an osteotomy as her hips
were still extremely shallow, but luckily at her last appt in October we were
given the best news ever... She doesn't need further surgery her acetabular
indexes were 20/22 i.e. near normal. We are still celebrating lol!!!
Ella will surprise you and adapt well, she will also having you running around
the place... You are fortunate to have close family that have been through the
same experience and can offer you practical and emotional support. Say "hello"
to your brother and sister-in-law ;-) What are their names I may remember them
too!
Have you tried the hippy-chick belt? We bought ours from Mothercare and it is a
large belt with a wedge/ledge on one side where you can prop the baby in a hip
spica, it's not cheap (£35) but it is worth every penny to protect your back -
you can also buy it on-line.
I hope this helps and keep us updated. I promise Ella will be her happy smiley
self soon!
Take care
Sara x

Subject: Re: [Clicky Hips Club] Car Seats for Hip Spica babies!
Hi Sara
Thanks for your e mail re the car seat, I've managed to locate a Club Class
Extra Seat and we've ordered the extension straps from Britax, so hopefully we
will be "car mobile" shortly.
I am hoping to get some more equipment, i.e. a chair and table from the
hospital (not the easiest of things to arrange), but if this doesn't work out, I
may take you up on your offer to loan the high chair and push along, I will let
you know.
Ella seems to be coping OK, she does get a little frustrated as she wasn't
quite at the crawling stage before the cast was fitted so she hasn't yet found a
way to move around yet, but I'm sure she'll find a way soon, it's only her first
week!! The only thing I have noticed is she does seem a little more "clingy"
towards us, I suppose she feels a little vulnerable?
I think I am coping OK, my husband is fantastic and fortunately because he
works shifts, I am not on my own through the day 5 days a week, that helps,
especially when you have another child (Lewis is 4) to look after!!, the only
thing I will say is that Ella is a heavy load and she is playing havoc with my
back!!!!!!!!
How old is Emily, how long ago did she have a spica and is she OK now? My
niece had the same as Ella when she was her age and she is nearly 7 now and is
fine, my brother and sister in law remember your name from when they were in the
club!!, it's a small world.
Bye for now, take care
Luv Alison & Ella XX

Hi Alison
We had the Britax Clubclass car seat and this worked really well when Emily
was in her spica. We spoke to Britax and they sent us an extension strap at a
cost of £5. They don't manufactuer the clubclass carseat anymore, but I do know
they still supply the extension strap, so it may be worth giving them a call.
I have a highchair and pushalong car that Emily used when she was trussed up
and they are both available. I live in Warrington Cheshire just along the M62!
If you are interested let me know. Unfortunately, I loaned out the car seat
last week.
How is Ella coping with the cast? How are you coping? If you need any
advise or support just ask....
Take care

Subject: [Clicky Hips Club] Car Seats for Hip Spica babies!
Hi there, my name is Alison and I am mum to 8 month old Ella who has
just come home from hospital after having a closed reduction and a
hip spica cast fitted. Has anyone got any suggestions regarding
what car seats that are available, are suitable or adaptable for use
with a hip spica as we are having real problems and the hospital and
occupational therapy unit seem to offer no solutions. I have a
Britax Eclipse seat but the straps seem to be a problem as they are
not long enough, I have heard that maybe Britax can supply straps
but not sure if these are available for only selected models? Any
advise or if in fact anyone in the yorkshire area has any equipment
they no longer require that they would be willing to loan on to me
then please please let me know, I would be grateful. Thanks for
listening to me, best of luck to you all, Alison XX
