Re: [Clicky Hips Club] shallow hip????   Message List

Claire,

A friend of mine had twins in January, and her son apparently has shallow
sockets, too, since birth. However, the consultant has also recommended no
treatment for the moment - I think they're waiting to see if it heals itself as
he develops. He's now 5.5 months old.

As for her not improving, it is possible that she is improving (at the very
least by 1/2mm, which may not sound like much to us, but to a small baby may
actually be quite a lot), it just means that she's not out of the woods yet. We
were also told last week that IF it came to surgery, they wouldn't be able to
operate till at least 12-15 months because of the risks of cutting the blood
supply. Maybe they're giving her a good chance to heal naturally before they
take this step if this is the next step.

I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you took Jessica back this week to ask a few
questions, just to get everything sorted in your mind. Can you phone the
hospital and try to make an appointment, or even just drop in to have a chat?
I'm sure you won't be the first to do it!

If you're still not sure, can you seek a second opinion? Did you ask the doctor
at the Birmingham hospital if he had any opinions on what should be done? If
not, is it possible for you to go elsewhere just to give her the once over?

Let us know how she gets on. It is a worrying time, but hey, that's what we had
children for, right?(!) I know everyone will have said the same thing to you,
but at least they discovered it early and she won't remember it!

Barbara

Subject: [Clicky Hips Club] shallow hip????

Hi my daughter had/has DDH both hips since birth. She wore a pavlik
24/7 for 6mths and then had an xray where the ADULT orto doc said her
hips were still slightly shallow but just said to come back in 6mts
when she was re xrayed and they had improved by 1/2 mm???? he still
said no treatment was neccassay and hes seeing what will happen. She
is going back in a few weeks and im probably being paranoid but if
the hips are still shallow DOESNT she need treatment?? has this
happened to anyone else. She recently went to the Birmingham
childrens hosp for an unrelated check and the doctor there gave her
the once over and asked if we knew she had DDH. If a doc can pick it
up like that it says to me its not improving??
HHHEEELLLPPP.
Jessicas mum.

Claire, I would be worried as you are. A 1/2 mm change is really small. The problem with DDH is that if you wait too long then the treatment gets more ...

Claire, It is very possible for a child to have had some treatment, then stopped treatment, and things to either get worse, or have never been totally 'fixed'...
