Hi Shona
That must of been a shock for you! Your doctor was referring to an osteotomy.
If you check out Nancy's website www.hip-baby.org it will give you info on this
type of procedure.
It is unusual for a surgeon to wait this long before starting some corrective
procedure. Normally at Sophies age an open reduction is performed with a few
months in a hip spica. Having said that if she is only mildy dysplastic then I
can sort of understand him wanting to wait on surgery.
My daughter's surgeon has a chart in his office which indicates how severe or
not the condition is, they use age of the child against the Acetabular Index of
the hips and with that info that can work it all out. My daughter's surgeon
won't do surgery unless they are in the severe category. So it sounds like your
sophies surgeon is of the "wait and see" variety like ours.
I hope I've helps. Let us know how you get on and good luck.
Take care
Sara (Emily's Mum)

Subject: [Clicky Hips Club] Update
Hi Guys
After we'd been told her hip looks normal in her last check, imagine
our shock when we were told this week that she has mild Dysplasia
(don't know whether that's correct as I copied it from surgeons
notes) and there is a possibility she'll need an operation. He
showed me an x-ray and the right hand side was curved and the left
straight and at an angle, I think I was looking at the hip socket, I
don't know and was too shocked to ask. He said it may sort itself
but we need to watch her and when she starts walking, if she has a
limp he'll have to perform a procedure beginning with an 'o', and
it's an incision on her joint and they call it a controlled break.
Do they mean they're going to break her hip socket? Does anyone
know anything about this procedure and am I making any sense?
Thanks
Shona & Sophie (now 7 months)
