Jo,
I think that you need to have someone who has seen this more than 2 times in
15 years. I am not sure why your visitor took the harness off so soon.
From what I remember ( I am from the U.S.) Birmingham Childrens Hospital
does have medical people who have dealt with this more than twice in 15
years. I would suggest that you make sure you get referred and get there as
soon as you can. Your daughter may be okay in the harness, or if they find
that it indeed wasn't working then it is on to the closed reduction. Is it
only one hip that is affected? At only 11 weeks old I think that a closed
will be the most likely operation, if one is needed. Most closed reductions
will require two casts with a change halfway, 6 weeks each cast, total of 12
weeks in the cast. Many have continued to breastfeed while in the cast. It
is a matter of lots of pillows and trying lots of holds until one works. I
am sorry that I can't give real suggestions in the breastfeeding, my
daughter's DDH was not discovered until she was 16 months old and she had
weaned herself just before all of it started. I often wished she had still
been breastfeeding for the comfort it could have given to her. The amount
of time in the hospital is generally only a night, maybe two. I hope that
this helps you some. You should not have to be all alone in dealing with
this.
Nancy[keeper of the www.hip-baby.org website, mom to Claudia, misdiagnosed
at 9 months, diagnosed at 16 months old with bilaterally dislocated hips and
DDH, 8 days traction, adductor tenotomy, closed reduction, spica casts for
20 weeks, full-time abduction brace wearing for 1 year, bilateral open
reductions and pelvic osteotomies, spica casts for 7 weeks, now going for
once a year check-ups!]
