1449 Bs As.
sabor a naranja cuesta unos 30 pesos argentinos.

Today's Question
The Medicinal Power of Mushrooms?

I've been trying to include more mushrooms in my diet because I heard
you say that they're really good for you. But now I've been told that
certain ones are carcinogenic! Can you give me the straight scoop on
this?

-- Anonymous

Today's Answer
(Published 10/13/2000)
Mushrooms are a big favorite of mine, but if you're just learning
about their medicinal properties, I don't blame you for being
confused about which ones are -- or aren't -- good for you. In
general, I advise against eating a lot of the cultivated white
or "button" mushrooms found on supermarket shelves across the nation.
They are among a number of foods (including celery, peanuts, peanut
products, and salted, pickled, or smoked foods) that contain natural
carcinogens. Just how dangerous these natural toxins are is unknown,
but we do know that they are not present in other kinds of mushrooms
that offer great health benefits.
Instead of white mushrooms, I suggest you look for the more exotic
varieties which are becoming increasingly available in this country.
Some are edible and can make a delicious addition to your diet, but
some are strictly medicinal mushrooms, and they come dried or in
capsule form. Here's a brief guide to my favorites, in alphabetical
order:

Cordyceps: A Chinese mushroom used as a tonic and restorative. It is
also known for improving athletic performance. You can buy whole,
dried cordyceps in health food stores and add them to soups and
stews, or drink tea made from powdered cordyceps. You can also get
cordyceps in capsule form. To treat general weakness, take cordyceps
once a day, following the dosage advice on the product. For health
maintenance, take it once or twice a week.

Maitake: This delicious Japanese mushroom is also called "hen of the
woods" because it grows in big clusters that resemble the fluffed
tail feathers of a nesting hen. You should be able to find it dried
or fresh in Japanese markets, gourmet foods stores, or upscale
supermarkets. Research indicates that maitake has anticancer,
antiviral, and immune-system enhancing effects. It may also reduce
blood pressure and blood sugar.

Reishi: Strictly a medicinal mushroom -- not a culinary one -- reishi
is hard and woody and has a very bitter taste. Like maitake and other
related mushrooms species, reishi can improve immune function and
inhibit the growth of some malignant tumors. It also shows
significant anti-inflammatory effects, reduces allergic
responsiveness, and protects the liver. You can buy dried, ground
mushrooms and use them to make tea if you don't mind the bitterness.
Otherwise, I suggest buying reishi tablets or capsules, which are
available in health food stores. Follow the recommended dosage, and
take reishi every day for at least two months to see what it can do
for you.

Shiitake: These meaty and flavorful mushrooms contain a substance
called eritadenine which encourages body tissues to absorb
cholesterol and lower the amount circulating in the blood. One
Japanese experiment showed that eating 90 grams (about three ounces)
of fresh shiitake a day lowered serum cholesterol 12 points in a
week -- it even counteracted cholesterol increases caused by adding
butter to the diet. Shiitakes also have antiviral and anticancer
effects. Dried shiitakes, available at all Oriental grocery stores,
are also effective. Fresh ones are becoming increasingly available
thanks to domestic cultivation of this delicious mushroom.
Are there any drawbacks to eating mushrooms? It's rare, but some
people are allergic, and some find them hard to digest. To learn more
about the health-promoting effects of mushrooms, check out
www.fungi.com, the Web site of Fungi Perfecti, an excellent source
for information about medicinal and gourmet edible mushrooms.

doctor errors?

First Thought For The Day.

"I am not responsible for what other people do or
say, I am only responsible for my reaction to
what other people do or say."

Arthritis lady's comment… I run this "Thought for
the Day" in every issue. It is the most
important advice I have ever had in 77 years.

These words changed my life and my marriage. I
first heard them more than 30 years ago and have
not lost my temper since then.

Try it. You will like it!

First Health Article

"AMA" says 250,000 deaths in year 2000 due to
doctors "ERRORS".

From Chris in Canada

...."The FDA claims it is afraid that "people
could cancel their surgery, radiation or
chemotherapy in favor of herbal cures that cost hundreds of
dollars." I'd like to ask if the government has
totaled up the cost of surgery, radiation and
chemotherapy lately? These established medical
treatments total up into the tens of thousands, not
hundreds, per person. But I don't see the government
concerned about these skyrocketing costs...

.....That's right, according to the "Journal of
the American Medical Association" Vol. 284 July
26, 2000, things like unnecessary surgery,
medication errors, negative effects of drugs, etc., cause
almost as many deaths as heart disease and
cancer.

This comes to a total to 250,000 deaths per year
from iatrogenic causes! Iatrogenic means it was
caused by a physician's activity, manner, or
therapy. And these estimates are for deaths only and
do not include negative effects that are
associated with disability or discomfort!

Doesn't this beg the question, "Is treatment from
a doctor safe?" Yet I do not see the government
addressing this issue in any way...

....This prompts me to ask, who is the government
protecting? And why?"...

Given the dismal track record of modern medicine
they (FDA etc.) have no right to force people
into dangerous procedures or drugs. If the
mainstream health system provided real solutions and cures
then why should anyone waste their time with
alternatives in the first place. As far as I am
concerned no one has the right to tell me what to do.
The medical system should not be a monopoly in
the first place. It is only so because we let them
get away with crimes of medicine day in and day
out."...

"OPERATION CURE ALL? WHOSE CURE?"

Tue, 4 Sep 2001 22:42:43 -0700

Please read the following excellent but sobering
article and spread it far and wide. Thanks to
Myra Elaine for the following:

September 3, 2001
OPERATION CURE.ALL -- WHOSE CURE?
by Ruth James

Something very disturbing happened this week. The
long arm of the government got longer. Going by
the name of Operation Cure. All, the FDA and the
FTC have launched a joint campaign to cure
themselves of all competition.

Apparently, the growing popularity of alternative
medicine and sales of health products are putting
a dent in big medicine's pockets. So much so,
that they've launched a serious campaign on and
offline against it.

The government's proclaimed goal is protecting
the health of citizens. To that end, testimonials
are basically deemed unsubstantiated and deceptive
unless they follow stringent rules and legalities
set up by the government.

One of these rules is that testimonials and
endorsements must be backed up by "competent and
reliable scientific evidence" (i.e., scientific tests,
analyses, research, and studies). While this
sounds commendable, what does this really mean?

It means that unless there are clinical studies,
research, tests and analysis behind even the most
mundane statement, it cannot be used. Most of us
are not qualified to do scientific research, nor
do we have the money to hire a scientist to do it
for us every time we want to give a testimonial.

The government requires that testimonials cannot
imply that they treat, cure, prevent, or mitigate
any disease. What makes it difficult is that
exactly what is permissible and what is not is
extremely complex and baffling. The average person
could not possibly understand the 50 pages the FDA
takes up explaning the regulations and all their
intricacies without a skilled lawyer.

In addition, there are only certain ways
testimonials can be structured, called
"structure/function" rules. In most cases, a genuine statement from
an average person would not fill the criteria of
"structure/function." Even if someone were aware
of the stringent rules that applied, it would be
very difficult for anyone but a skilled lawyer to
give an acceptable testimony.

Since very few testimonies are legal, this nearly
completely and conveniently eliminates using
them. As an added burden, if all the correct
documentation exists and the testimony is structured
correctly, a report must be filed with the FDA within
30 days of using the testimony. It appears the
government has found a way to tie the hands of
Internet health companies so that testimonies about
their products cannot be heard.

Another one of the new regulations is under the
guise of 'deception.' While I agree that
advertising should not be misleading, it is now illegal
for health websites to mention the name of a
condition, such as 'headache,' 'arthritis,' 'heart
disease,' or even 'pain' anywhere, not only in
testimonials. Symptoms relating to diseases also cannot
be used because they IMPLY a disease condition.
Even a factual statement such as, "According to
the National Cancer Institute, ingredient X
protects smoker's lungs," is considered an impermissible
disease claim.

Basically, no relationship can exist between a
supplement and a disease condition. Even natural
states such as pregnancy, menopause and menstrual
cycles qualify as diseases! All I can say is, its
going to be very hard for health websites,
including mine, to explain their products in anything
but the most watered-down terms.

The other major area of concern is that the FDA
has taken the position that Internet advertising
qualifies as labeling, and therefore falls within
its scope of its authority.

So, if someone makes a claim that a supplement
will treat, cure, prevent, or mitigate a disease,
the supplement loses its status as a supplement
and is then categorized as a drug.

And? all drugs must pass the FDA's review process
to ensure that they are safe and effective for
their represented uses. This is a rigorous and
incredibly expensive and lengthy review process that
nobody really wants to go through - not even the
drug companies! But until it is completed, the
FDA considers the product to be an unapproved new
drug, which may not be marketed. And putting some
teeth into their decree, the FDA has the
authority to seize the product if it is distributed to
the public.

Now that's power! Designed to make Internet
health marketers shake in their boots, no doubt.

The FDA and FTC take the position that they have
the jurisdiction to control freedom of speech for
the sake of protecting public health. They argue
that 'deception' is misleading the public. They
are doing their best to discredit promotions that
use words like "exclusive products," "secret
ingredient" or "ancient remedy" -- claiming that
these are meaningless scientific terms.

As far as I know, nobody was ever trying to call
them scientific terms. They are marketing terms,
pure and simple. They were never meant to be
scientific. I mean, would you mistake "secret
ingredient" or "ancient remedy" for a scientific term?
You'll find these terms in many books on headlines
and sales letters. I don't think anyone would be
foolish enough to go searching for them in a
researcher's study. Why is the government implying
there is deception here?

The government gave their approval for drug
companies to advertise their prescription medications
in TV commercials and in magazine ads. TV viewers
are blasted with them every night. But they want
to make sure that information about natural
products is suppressed. It doesn't take a rocket
scientist to figure out what's going on here.

The FDA claims it is afraid that "people could
cancel their surgery, radiation or chemotherapy in
favor of herbal cures that cost hundreds of
dollars." I'd like to ask if the government has
totaled up the cost of surgery, radiation and
chemotherapy lately? These established medical treatments
total up into the tens of thousands, not
hundreds, per person. But I don't see the government
concerned about these skyrocketing costs.

After all, there's a whole industry out there
profiting from it. Think of all the hospitals and
cancer centers in existence with all the equipment
they purchase and all the people they employ.
Think of all the companies that manufacture this
specialized equipment. And think of all the medical
schools and nursing schools that train doctors
and nurses to use it. Think of the drug companies
that manufacture chemo and all the money they make
from it. And don't forget the insurance
companies.

When you think of all this, you can get a picture
of just the 'cancer industry' alone. Yet the
government is afraid a few people might spend a few
hundred dollars on natural substances? No, they
are afraid the cancer industry might lose money.
They are afraid that since the sales of health
items are increasing, they are losing their edge -
that their brainwashing of the public is growing
thin. Hence, they have come out with a new campaign
of fresh ideas for re-brainwashing the public.

Also targeted is a device that delivers a mild
electric current that purportedly kills the
parasites causing such serious diseases as cancer and
Alzheimer's. I tried such a device personally. Did
it work? No. But I'm glad I had the freedom to
try it and find out for myself. The mild electric
current didn't hurt me and the cost was
insignificant.

The FDA and FTC are also concerned that those
with HIV or AIDS could use St. John's Wort as a
treatment for the disease. And that St. John's Wort
is known to interfere with proven HIV/AIDS
medications. I seriously doubt that very many HIV or
AIDS patients would use St. John's Wort as their
sole treatment. But if they do, why should the
government prohibit them? Why shouldn't they have the
choice?

I picked up an issue of 'People' magazine the
other day. I was astounded when I opened to a very
convincing full-color, two- page ad placed by the
government discrediting what they called
'unsubstantiated and undocumented' claims by health
companies. They urged readers not try any health
product without discussing it with their doctor first
and going to the government website.

Discussing it with your doctor? We can pretty
well predict how that will turn out. How many
doctors know anything about all the health products
available? How many doctors even know anything about
nutrition, considering doctors are only required
to take one course on nutrition? How many doctors
are interested in anything natural, considering
they are trained to dispense drugs, and are given
bonuses and incentives to do so (even all-expense
paid vacations to exotic locations for
'training')? How many doctors even care that the medicine
they give you for your heart may damage your
nerves or your liver?

Several times, I have refused medication due to
side effects. I was treated with utter disgust and
contempt by the doctors and their staff. A friend
of mine cancelled surgery on her nose for a skin
problem, only to receive an irate call from her
doctor who blamed her for negatively impacting his
income!

Not only that, but I have seen many of my friends
and relatives go through chemo. I've seen what it
can do to the body and the brain. And I've seen
too many young women die horrible deaths shortly
after starting chemo. And still others died the
second time around, because the chemo-treated
cancer returned.

Yet the only three legal treatments for cancer in
this country are chemotherapy, surgery, and
radiation.

Does the government require doctors to give you
the rates of failure with chemo or the
side-effects of radiation? Does the government even require
the doctors to tell you that there were 17,000
deaths from Aspirin alone last year? How about the
fact that doctors are the third leading cause of
death in America today?

That's right, according to the "Journal of the
American Medical Association" Vol. 284 July 26,
2000, things like unnecessary surgery, medication
errors, negative effects of drugs, etc., cause
almost as many deaths as heart disease and cancer.

This comes to a total to 250,000 deaths per year
from iatrogenic causes! Iatrogenic means it was
caused by a physician's activity, manner, or
therapy. And these estimates are for deaths only and
do not include negative effects that are
associated with disability or discomfort!

Doesn't this beg the question, "Is treatment from
a doctor safe?" Yet I do not see the government
addressing this issue in any way.

It is a known fact the US health care system is
the most expensive in the world, yet the quality
of health in the US rates poorly. In a recent
comparison of the health care in 13 countries, the
United States ranked an average of 12th (second
from the bottom) for 16 available health indicators.
In another study by the World Health Organization
of 25 industrialized countries, the US ranked
15th.

This prompts me to ask, who is the government
protecting? And why?

I'll never forget one brave woman with cancer
that I knew who chose to die naturally, without
chemo or radiation. She died in peace, surrounded by
her loving family, with all her wits about her.
In contrast, I remember the horrible deaths of my
friends who received full doses of chemo and died
anyway. They had loving families too, but they
did not die gracefully or in peace. The chemo had
affected their mental (and emotional and physical)
faculties and they lost touch with the world long
before it seemed right.

And then, I read about how 'required' food
labels, mandated by the FDA, are concealing a hardened
killer - trans fat, found in snack foods. The
labels are not required to mention trans fat. Yet
trans fat is considered worse than saturated fat by
some scientists. It elevates bad cholesterol;
lowers good cholesterol; increases triglycerides;
and makes blood platelets stickier, increasing the
chance of clots. Even if the saturated fat
content of a food is low, the trans fat content can be
very high.

Back in 1999 a cost-benefit analysis done for the
FDA estimated that labeling trans fat would save
$3 billion to $8 billion annually in averted
heart disease costs. And labeling would save from
2,000 to 5,000 lives a year. But the FDA has not yet
required industrial trans fat to be listed on
labels. This means the labels are actually
MISLEADING heart patients, diabetics, athletes and
millions of other consumers who watch their fat intake.

But the FDA has been reluctant to require
labeling. Aren't they concerned that 'Nutritional Facts'
labels on foods are misleading? Perhaps their
logic is, why should they bother the big snack food
manufacturers? After all, they insure the
hospitals get plenty of patients. And nobody knows about
trans fat anyway. It's so much easier to target
the health food and supplement industry. It's so
much easier to declare that websites are a form of
'labels' and slap on regulations. And its easy to
discredit a smaller industry that is concerned
about real health.

Every time the FDA attempts to require that
nutritional supplements be obtained by prescription
only, there is tremendous public outcry. Petitions
are circulated, letters are send in, calls are
placed. The government is forced to back off due to
public indignation. Now, they have found a way to
gain a stronghold. They have found a way to slip
suppression of nutritional information past the
public. They are hoping you never know of this.
And that you don't notice what is not being said so
that they can creep a little further, with each
new regulation, into taking your health choices
away until they are eventually controlling all your
health decisions.

Ask yourself, whose health is the government
really concerned about? Yours or the pockets of the
drug and medical industry? Don't let them take
your choices away from you.

Personal not from Margie…Please pass this along
to everyone you know. Or send me their email
addresses and I will send this newsletter.

The government put a friend in Texas out of
buisinss in 1984. She ran a well-know health spa
dedicated to fasting and nutritional programs.

Why? One day she received a call from a
desperate man who begged her to take him in. He had
been on chemo and gone the route of the doctors and
was told he would die in weeks.

She tried to discourage him. Due to his records
he was at the point of death but he was desperate
and she took him into her program.

He died 10 days later at her spa and the
officails swooped down…took all her records, made her
guests leave and shut her down. They closed her
bank accounts. She was near retirement but spent
her life savings trying to regain her possessions.

And failed.

Second Thought Of The Day

Any path is only a path…and there is no affront,
to oneself or to others, in dropping it if that
is what your heart tells you.

Third Thought Of The Day

Borrow trouble for yourself, it that is your
nature, but don't lend it to your neighbors.

Third Health Article

"POPULAR SWEETENER LINKED TO ALLERGIC REACTIOS".

The women tested were evaluated due to their
frequent hives, itches, rashes…their sysptoms
correlated with aspartame consuption.

Aspertame, the sweetener known as NutreSweet and
Equal, caused allergic responses in women tested
at Washington University of Medicine in St.
Louis.

One woman tested drank two or three cans of
aspartame-sweetened diet soda daily. Another drank a
popular over the counter diet drink with
aspartame.

Their itching and hives were accompanied by
swelling of the throat. The FDA had over 700
complaints similar to the above. Nothing was done about
it.

Some would get 7 to 9 inch welts on her skin. And
had trouble breathing. Sometimes the hives were
so bad she did not leave her home. This went on
for a year before it was traced to Aspartame.

A 12 ounce diet soda contains about 150
milligrams of NutraSweet and a packet of Equal has 35
milligrams.

NutraSweet is composed of two amino
acids…aspartic acid and ;henylalanine and was discovered
during the search for an agent to block the release of
stomach acid.

More than 100 million Americans regularly consume
aspartame and at least 90 products are
artificially sweetened with it.

Reports of people developing inflammatory nodules
in fatty tissues on their legs after ingesting
aspartame.

Research is cited from Leeds University in
England, found that artifical sweeteners do not satisfy
hunger as does sugar. The study showed aspartame
actually increased feelings of hunger for some
people.

A recent University of California, Berkeley
Wellness Letter points out that in spite of consuming
great amounts of sugar substitutes Americans are
fatter than ever.

Research by the American Cancer Society is cited
which shows lo;ng time users of artificial
sweeteners are more likely then nonusers to gain weight
over the period of a year.

AND their weight gain was significantly more than
that of non users, regardless of initial body
weight.

Report keep coming in of links to cancer but are
not being reported to the public.

Personal note for Margie…It is another example of
the harm done when we continue to add things to
our diet that are man made.

Keep it simple. Eat meats, eggs, vegetables and
tart fruits for the perfect diet. No grains or
Flour products.

More on this later.

sorprende

Given that you called it "mushroom tea," I suspect that it is
not Manchurian but Kombucha tea that they are interested in. I do
not think the thread is still on the fnspec archive, but Kombucha tea
had its "fifteen minutes of fame" last year, with still a trickle of
items coming out now. It is basically a fungal growth that has a
vague resemblance to a mushroom. It is steeped in water and then
consumed (not be me!). The National Council Against Health Fraud
mentions it again in the January/February 1996 newsletter.

Andrew, I have used Tea Tree Oil for some other problems. Good stuff.
Works.
And certainly won't hurt to try it on a topical application.

As far as Kombucha goes I suspect the acidic environment that results
from
its application is what does in the fungus. And the mild acetic acid
probably helps dissolve away some of the detritus and dead tissue.

It is is an old principle in bacteriology. Change the ph and kill the
bug.

Offering natural and alternative methods for controlling and
relieving psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a puzzle. Treatments that work wonders for one victim
have no effect or benefit for another. We offer a variety of
alternative treatments and hope one of them will be the answer for
you.

Psoriasis Treatments include:
1) Dead Sea Salts This traditional treatment to healing naturally has
been used by the Bedouins for thousands of years. We have a 6 week
program designed to use in your home.

2) A special diet book written by a former sufferer of the itching
and flaking skin condition. The author is a registered nurse who used
food to reverse the signs and symptoms of her condition.

3) Homeopathic treatment that helps to target the source of the
problem with no damaging side effects.

4) Herbal extractions like Oregon Grape Root Extract and Herbal Detox
Tea combinations that gently cleanse your body of toxins and help
optimize your liver function. Herbs have historically been used for
treatment of skin conditions.

5) Gentle herbal scalp creams and shampoos that contain FDA approved
ingredients to combine nature with science.

6) Dietary supplements to improve your defense systems, Omega
Fortified Flax (recommended for children and adults) and Alkyrol
Shark Liver Oil for maximum Omega 3 fatty acids.

Maintaining a healthy and nutritious diet can improve general health
and have a positive impact on psoriasis.

The Natural Products Center is proud to be a central location for
exploring alternative health products and carries a complete line of
Loma Lux and LupiCare products. You can also find special discounted
treatment programs of Mineral Care Dead Sea Salts. Our special
packages put together FDA recognized approaches for psoriasis with
diet and nutritional supplements to give you a multi-pronged approach
to dealing with your skin condition.

We encourage you to become informed about psoriasis and the natural
products that can have a positive impact your skin..

What is psoriasis and how it can be controlled are just some of the
questions explored on this web site. Is there a cure? NO. But you can
effectively keep the itching skin, scaling, and red lesions at bay
without injections, caustic pharmaceuticals, or cancer causing
therapies. Natural approaches do work.

We searched the world over to bring you unique and effective choices
for psoriasis. We hope you find the lost treasures you were seeking.
Our nautical theme invokes a spirit of adventure and discovery. There
are items here that are not from the sea, but herbal, homeopathic,

encima!!!!!!! Se que es muy bueno para
todos. Yo he querido conseguirlo y hacérmelo aca

Dear Claudio,

Most everyone who takes Kombucha will tell you that the tea has
boosted their energy levels. Most report they get a slight buzz
immediately after drinking the tea and a feeling of well being.

"Romanow, Medical Director of the Center for Sports Medicine of
Profsport, performed studies on athletes that consumed Kombucha under
very intensive stress during their training and competitive cycles.
Romanow found that the athletes who consumed Kombucha had an increase
in maximum performance capability, an increase in cardiac output,
improved gastrointestinal function, and an improved sense of well
being. As a result, Romanow stated that Kombucha most probably serves
as a biostimulator with a broad range of activity, able to increase
aerobic capacity and improve metabolic function."

Given the earned reputation of Kombucha tea over the last 2000 years
and its minor cost it is well worth trying the tea to see if it can
help you. If it does not improve your health, as we state on our web
site, we will return your money... you have nothing to lose by giving
it a try to see if it will help you as it has helps so many others.

If you have further questions let me know. If you wish to place and
order their is an order link at the bottom of this message.

Regards,

Scott

What is a Good Diet?

There has been a lot of press lately about low carbohydrate diets, in
particular the Atkins Diet. The problem with most diets is they are
not nutritionally complete. The Atkins diet which does not emphasize
the need to keep your diet low-fat, is one of these. We are often
asked what Dr. Colgan eats and what type of "diet" we recommend.
Here's the answer:

Protein is an important part of any good diet and we advise the

red meat is acceptable occasionally. Dr. Colgan eats a lot of fresh
fish, lean turkey and chicken. We are fortunate to live somewhere
where we have access to locally grown, often organic, meats and fresh
caught seafood. When you buy fish try to purchase deep water fish
and/or cold-water fish. Think carefully about where the fish was
caught as some areas are obviously more polluted than others. The
Gulf of Mexico as opposed to the coast of Alaska for example.

Fish is usually poached, grilled or baked. Chicken and turkey is
usually baked, roasted, grilled or barbecued. If oil is needed it is
as little as possible. Good quality stainless cookware will help with
this. No deep fired food at all, and the only sautéing is usually
done in a Wok with very little oil. Keep your protein source low-fat.
No hamburgers, no bacon and certainly no fried foods of any kind.

Carbohydrates:

Carbohydrates include all sugars, starches, grains, beans,
fruit and vegetables. Some of the basic ideas of the Atkins' diet are
correct. Excess carbohydrates are more readily stored as bodyfat. If
you eat more carbohydrates than the energy you require, you will put
on bodyfat. So to lose bodyfat you must do two things. Eat
carbohydrates that are not easily stored as bodyfat and exercise
sufficiently to make the body use stored bodyfat as an energy source.

We encourage everyone to get all their carbohydrate needs
primarily from fresh vegetables and fruit, preferably organic. With
every meal Dr. Colgan has either a fresh salad or steamed vegetables
along with some fresh fruit. He never eats starchy vegetables such as
white potatoes. You can consume a large amount of fresh vegetables
and never put on any bodyfat.

Dr. Colgan seldom eats bread, but when he does it is always a
wholegrain bread. The only cereal he eats is old-fashioned oats,
never any of the popular boxed cereals. He never eats pasta of any
kind. He will occasionally eat wild or brown rice, never white rice.
He eats fresh unshelled nuts such as walnuts and enjoys organic
pumpkin and sunflower seeds. These choices are high in essential fats.

The amount of and types of carbohydrate you eat are also
determined by your lifestyle, age and exercise level. Endurance
athletes require more carbohydrates than "couch potatoes" as their
energy needs are much higher. So determine your carbohydrate needs
for your own lifestyle and you will be able to enjoy that lovely
pasta dinner on an evening out without putting on excess bodyfat.

As we get older and our insulin metabolism becomes less
efficient we need to make sure that we choose carbohydrates that are
low-glycemic. For anyone who is interested we can email you a copy of
our low-glycemic chart that we use with our athletes.

Fats:

A diet low in saturated fats is very important for overall
health. A high saturated fat diet will cause cardiovascular disease.
The Atkins' diet does not stress the need for a low saturated fat
diet. It does not differentiate between bad and good fats. I know
many people who have been on the Atkins diet and have restricted
their carbohydrate intake dramatically but think it fine to eat fatty
bacon and hamburgers.

You must get your essential fats daily. We advise the use
of organic flaxseed oil that you can use as a base for your salad
dressings. For cooking when necessary use small quantities of organic
cold pressed olive oil. Both these oils contain good essential fats.

This was something that Dr. Atkins did not understand. It
was reported recently over the AP Wire that Dr. Robert Atkins, who
died recently, weighed 258 pounds at the time of his death. Before
his death, he suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and
hypertension. Not only was he not following his own advice to
maintain a good weight and low bodyfat, but his idea of not worrying
about saturated fat intake certainly did his health no good.

Cottage Cheese Pancakes

Here as an example is one of Dr. Colgan's favorite weekend brunches.
A high-protein pancake. I hope you all enjoy them. The carbohydrate
comes from wholewheat flour and old-fashioned oatmeal. The protein
comes from the cottage cheese, the milk, the egg yolks and the egg
whites. The fat is kept down by using low-fat cottage cheese, only
two egg yolks and just 2 tablespoons of low-fat milk. Use a non-stick
griddle or heavy duty skillet to cook so you can just brush it
lightly with oil.

1 lb (500 grams) low-fat (1% works well) cottage cheese

2/3 cup wholewheat flour

1/3 cup old-fashioned oats

2 egg yolks

3 tablespoons of honey or organic sugar

2 tablespoons of low-fat milk

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon of cardamom

6 egg whites

Mix cottage cheese, flour, oatmeal, egg yolks, honey, milk, vanilla
and cardamom in large bowl. It will be stiff. In another bowl beat
the egg whites until they are stiff but not dry. Fold the whites into
the cottage cheese mixture in two additions. Heat your griddle and
cook the pancakes in spoonfuls as usual.

Serve them with cut up fresh berries or chopped fresh seasonal fruit.
When we have fresh berries in our orchard Dr. Colgan and myself will
often be found there early on a Sunday morning clad in our dressing
gowns (for prickle protection) collecting the fresh berries to put on
the pancakes we will later bake. Most of the berries make it back to
the kitchen.

On 28th August 2003, Dr Claude Lenfant, Director of the US National
Heart Lung and Blood Institute accused physicians nationwide of
ignorance. In the New England Journal of Medicine Dr. Lenfant noted
that although America spends far more money on medical research than
any other country on Earth, and is the repository of all the new
medical knowledge, life expectancy is less than in 22 other
countries.1

With meticulous logic, Lenfant documents many advances in medicine
that are simply not being applied in hospitals, doctors' offices and
medical education programs, either because of physicians ignorance or
(hopefully not) negligence or incompetence.

Example: In the last quarter of 2002 one-third of all Americans
presenting at emergency rooms with a heart attack were given obsolete
treatments.1

Example: Although obesity is now linked to more than 40 diseases
including cardiovascular disease and a whole range of cancers, only
42% of obese patients are even advised by their physicians to lose
weight, let alone given any help to do so.2

Example: Despite the proven effects of exercise for prevention of a
wide range of disease, only 34% of patients were advised by their
physicians to exercise.3

Example: Very few physicians seem aware of the latest discoveries
strongly linking overweight, hypertension, insulin resistance and
heart disease, and the dynamite knowledge that you cannot treat any
one of these diseases successfully without treating all of them. The
physicians for example, who gives an overweight patient hypertensive
blood pressure medication and sends him home is being negligent, and
leaving the patient at high risk of heart attack.4

Every creature in creation is mostly water. Three-quarters of your
brain is water. Your muscles are 70 percent water. Your blood is 82
percent water. Even your bones are a quarter water. Almost all your
biochemistry can take place only in water. The most important
component of your body is plain H20.

The quality of your muscles, bones, organs and brain, their function,
their resistance to injury and disease, and their longevity, is
absolutely dependent on the purity of the water that you drink. It
has become a rare commodity.

Pure Well Water – Where?
Many people still have private well water. They commonly think this
spring-fed water is cleaner than tap water, because it does not go
through any treatment system. It is not treated with chemicals such
as aluminum and chlorine. But infectious and parasitic diseases are
still the principal cause of death and illness throughout the world,
primarily because of poor water quality. In 1997, diarrhea was ranked
first in the world as a cause of illness and sixth as a cause of
death.1,2 Diarrhea is caused mainly by contaminated water.

Like all commercial supplies, most well water is also contaminated
with man-made toxins. All drinking water, including well or spring
water is derived either from surface waters or groundwater. Water
from either source is rarely pure. Increasing industrialization and
urbanization, which inevitably spawn toxic dump sites, together with
intensified agriculture, which contaminates water with fertilizers
and pesticides, have decimated the pure water supply. In addition we
have all the microbes of civilization that breed happily in your
water supply if it is not treated. To drink well or spring water
without having it tested for contaminants on a regular basis, is
playing Russian roulette.

Municipal Water Is Not Clean
Modern treatment methods have reduced the possibility of bacterial or
viral infections being transmitted in municipal drinking water. But
most of the systems in America are now overwhelmed by demand.
Waterborne microbial outbreaks have been reported in communities with
even the best systems of water quality control. One of the most
notorious outbreaks happened in Wisconsin in 1993. Contaminated
water supplies caused a widespread outbreak of gastrointestinal
illness, mainly attributable to Cryptosporidium. This outbreak
affected more than 400,000 people.3

One big problem is that chlorination does not eliminate all
waterborne disease. Some pathogens are hard to kill. These include
the Norwalk virus, hepatitis A, Giardia and Cryptosporidium.4,5,6

Even Canada with more water per acre than any other developed
country, and only a small population, cannot contain the infection
problem. Representative studies conducted in Quebec, found that up
to 40% of gastroenteritis was associated with tap water.7,8
Remember, this water was meeting public health standards for water
treatment.

Health authorities are very aware of these problems, and there is
endless debate in Canada and the United States about the urgent need
for stricter water quality control and additional water treatment.9
Though debate rages, little has been accomplished. If you drink tap
water you continually risk disease.

To add to your health burden, by-products of chlorine itself causes
illness, including cancer. During the chlorination of drinking
water, a complex mixture of by-products forms from chlorine and the
organic and inorganic compounds present in raw water, including the
carcinogens trihalomethanes and chloroform.10 Gastrointestinal
cancer and urinary tract cancer are strongly linked to chlorination.11

Researchers also estimate that 15 percent of bladder cancers in
Ontario may be caused by drinking water containing relatively high
levels of chlorination by-products. A report by the Center for
Disease Control in Canada, admits that the risk of bladder cancer
from drinking water is an important public health problem.12

Arsenic is another major water contaminant widespread in the water
supply. This is a problem for both untreated water and municipal
water. Arsenic is very difficult to eliminate from water using
conventional methods. Arsenic in drinking water is a recognized cause
of cancer of the skin, lung and bladder.13,14

The Quest For Clean Water
So what are the alternatives? The bottled water industry is booming.
But many of these products are simply tap water passed
through "conditioning filters" such as charcoal, which eliminate some
of the chlorine and unpleasant tastes and odors. These filters do
not remove the toxins.

What about "spring" water? Brands labeled "Spring Water" legally have
to be from a spring, unless the words are a brand name, or part of a
brand name. Then they are just tap water. Spring water, however, is
just untreated groundwater. Whatever goes into the surrounding
ground ends up in the spring water. Today, spring water is no more
pure than well water.

Springs also contain all kinds of organic matter and often some very
toxic minerals. A test of the well known bottled Appollinaris spring
water imported from West Germany, showed excessive levels of selenium
and cobalt, and a level of arsenic that exceeded the EPA standards by
6000 percent.15 The purity of bottled water is a figment of the
greedy imaginations of the folks who profit from it.

Distill Your Water
The only reliable bottled water is distilled water. Virtually
everything is removed by steam distillation, leaving almost pure H20.
And because distilled water is often used for medical purposes, the
companies that produce it have more rigorous standards.

Bottled distilled water, however, is very costly. An excellent
alternative and a potent anti-cancer strategy is to put in your own
purification system to clean your tap or well water for drinking and
cooking. From our writings on water over the last two decades, and
the work of many other scientists, a lot of new houses are now having
whole house distillation systems installed that clean all water
entering the house. Now that's clean!

For most people a whole-house system is not a practical solution.
But there are many good systems available that install in or near
your kitchen that provide plenty of clean water for your family.
Simple charcoal filters will not do. These do not remove the majority
of contaminants. A good reverse osmosis unit that is serviced
regularly will bring your water down to between 40-50 parts per
million of dissolved solids. This is reasonable when you consider
that most tap water is 300 – 600 parts per million of dissolved
solids.

By far the best system, however, is a home distiller which also
incorporates a solvent vent that vents outside the house. There are
excellent products available that are no more trouble to service than
your dishwasher. Some of the best are available through Pure Water
Inc (www.purewaterinc.com). A good distiller will clean your water so
that it is between 0-12 parts per million of dissolved solids. Clean
as a whistle!

Some folks object to this purity, complaining that the very emptiness
of distilled water causes it to leach minerals from the body. There
have been many articles making these claims recently. Most of these
are written by people selling alternative water cleaning systems such
as reverse osmosis systems. Anyone with a basic understanding of
biochemistry knows that it is impossible for water to leach minerals
from your body. As soon as you drink it, water becomes a soupy
mixture with all the contents of your gut. On absorption through the
intestinal wall, the mixture immediately blends with your body fluids
and becomes part of you. There is no physiological way it can suck
minerals out.

Other folk claim that you are missing your minerals by not getting
them from your water. Certainly some studies have shown that "hard"
water, that is, water with a high level of minerals, especially
calcium and magnesium, is heart protective. But it is not the
drinking water that does the trick. Most of the minerals are
concentrated in the food you eat that is grown on these mineral
enriched soils. If we were to rely on the miniscule amount of
minerals in water for our minerals, we would all be in a bad way. And
we already know that minerals are depleted in our foods, so anyone
with sense is taking their daily mineral supplement.

It is the fruits, vegetables and grains that take up the minerals and
concentrate them sufficiently to provide our mineral requirements.
Dr. Eric Underwood, a world expert on minerals in food, states it
plainly, "Plant materials provide the main source of minerals to
animals and to most members of the human race."16 Drink and cook with
water as pure H20, and put another tick on your cancer prevention
program.

Another myth generated by dubious marketers is that distilled water
absorbs carbon dioxide making it acidic. The only "bubbly" water I
see is usually in a bottle of Perrier or San Pellegrino. I can leave
my glass of distilled water sitting by my computer desk and it does
not start to "consume" carbon dioxide and change its chemistry.
Distilled water is not some kind of magnet that suddenly sucks in
carbon dioxide from the air. If it did, all water would. To make
Perrier or soda "bubble" the carbon dioxide is forced into it. And as
we all know, leave your Perrier sitting open and it is not long
before that carbon dioxide has all disappeared leaving you with still
water. Distilled water or pure H20 also has a neutral pH. It is not
acidic at all, it is non-reactive and this is why it is used in
research and in hospitals.

Anyone who doubts any of the above should do their own research. The
National Library of Medicine's Medline archive is open to anyone with
access to the internet. It is free and you can look up all the VALID
scientific studies you wish. You will find none about the supposed
toxic effects of distilled water. The site address is
http://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/.
