Macular Degeneration - A LITTLE UPDATING
Current scientific information now indicates that certain vegetables/greens help fight loss of sight due to Macular Degeneration and Cataracts.
This information from the National Eye Institute indicates that high level of Luteins, Zeaxanthin, Vitamins C, Vitamin E, Zinc, and other anti-oxidants (such as those found in the largest quantities in Rhubarb, Bilberries, Marigold petals, Kale, Carrots, Spinach etc.) help fight this loss of eye acuity.
What Factors Damage Eye Sight?
Inadequate nutrient support, free radicals, pollution, smoking, UV radiation and direct sunlight can cause damage to the eye.
How Can One Protect Eye Sight?
There are two key ways to prevent eye damage and to maintain healthy eyes.
One way is to provide proper nutritional support to the macula, retina and lens. Phyto Nutrients found in plants such as Bilberry, Marigold petals, Spinach, Kale, Rhubarb, Carrots, and other dark green vegetables provide excellent eye support. Among the richest sources of eye protecting luteins are Bilberry, and Marigold petals
The other way is through changes in life style to minimize damage by smoking, air, pollution, sunlight, control of diabetes etc.
The best way is to do both.
Carotenes - Lutein and Zeaxanthin
We've all heard of Carotenes. There are over 700 of them.
According to a Harvard study, luteins and zeaxanthins (28 of them - not 1 or 2 as found in synthetic supplements) are found in high concentrations in the eyes - 1000X more concentrated in the Macula than in any other part of the body. They appear to be essential for proper eye health. This study suggests that Luteins protect the macula by acting as filters to screen out damaging light and as anti-oxidants to prevent damage to macula by free radicals.
SOME FACTS ABOUT LUTEINS AND VISION
1. Evidence from epidemiological studies suggest that high nutritional intake of luteins reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration, wet and dry, and cataracts.
2. Reduced macular content of luteins correlates with increased risk of developing macular degeneration.
3. The Macula selectively concentrates luteins at up to 1,000 times greated than any other organ of the body
4. Three 'luteins' appear to be signinicant in eye health - lutein, zeazantin and neo-zeaxanthin. The body cannot make lutein and
zeaxanthin. Neoxanthin can be made by the body from lutein.
5. The lens also accumulates lutein and neazanthin, possibly to provide anti-oxidant and light filtering.
6. The amount of 'luteins' in the macula can be increased by dietery means.
7. The fact that lutein is concentrated at the peripheri while zeazanthin is concentrated at the center area of the macula
may indicate different function for, and need to intake, both.
