"What manner of man is this that even the wind and
the waves obey Him" Matthew 8:27
One day, when the disciples were out on the sea, in the
boat with Jesus, a great storm came up. It must have
been a monstrous one because these were fisherman
who were used to bad weather and even they were
terrified. Their assessment of the situation was certain
death and destruction. Their reaction to the situation
was to accuse Jesus of not caring about their
circumstances since He appeared to be uninvolved. They
forgot that He was the Creator and Ruler over everything
including their safety and well-being. Well, you know the
rest of the story.
Jesus speaks.
The storm obeys.
The disciples are amazed.
To me the most interesting and revealing part of this story
is that Jesus did not provide a quick way out of the sea. He
did not point toward land and a safe port. He made no
suggestion about leaving the situation in which the storm
brewed. They remained on the water. He solved their
problem within their circumstances. Then He and they
continued on to their destinations.
No running away.
No jumping over board.
Just the calm reassurance that
"With Christ in the vessel we can smile at the storm".
