Hedgerow Herbalism: Herbal Medicine Making Workshop

Date:27th September 2008

Time: 10 - 4.30

Cost: £65 including lunch and £10 worth of materials

Unearth the secret Green Pharmacy locked in our fields and hedgerows. Learn how
to identify safely, collect and prepare the
wonderful medicinal plants growing all around us and start your own
herbal medicine cabinet to take away. Lead by qualified and experienced
medi9cal herbalists.

Content
There are two parts to the day: first, we find the plants, then learn
how best to use their medicine.

The morning comprises a plant-identification walk and foraging
expedition, which will give you a 'hedgerow-herbalist's eye-view' of
the plants that grow in our wild spaces. You will learn to safely
identify, select and harvest a variety of familiar (and not-so-
familiar) medicinal plants – and how to do this responsibly and
ethically to ensure a continued harvest for wild beasties and future
foragers.

In the afternoon, you will learn techniques and recipes for
extracting the medicine from the plants you have collected. You will
learn how to store and prepare the plants for future use, in a
variety of forms from oils and tinctures to creams and ointments.
This is a practical session and will give you the basis of a home
medicine-kit to take away with you.

The medicines we make will be from common hedgerow herbs, and are
based on simple, clearly-taught principles - so no prior knowledge of
herbal medicine is required.

What you will get from the course:

- An introduction to some of our common hedgerow medicines- and the
skills to identify and use them back in your own locality.

- A cache of invaluable herbal lore: the plants' medicine; botany;
folklore; stories

- Herbal recipes and techniques that can safely be applied to
different plants in home treatment.

- A 'starter kit' of remedies made on the day to take away – and the
inspiration to grow your knowledge of the plant medicines
