Two thirds of people in the UK have an elevated blood cholesterol
level - a proven factor in the cardiovascular diseases that will
debilitate most of us as we get older, and kill many of us.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is just one of a range of preventable,
cholesterol-linked diseases such as angina, stroke, intermittent
claudication and senile dementia. CHD alone kills more than 110,000
people in England every year. More than 1.4 million people suffer
from angina and 275,000 people have a heart attack annually. CHD is
the biggest killer in the country.
A rather nice online self-assessment risk for raised cholesterol is
available here...
http://www.floraproactiv.co.uk/cholesterolcheck/lifestyle-check.aspx
and it links to lots of practical advice on diet, exercise and
lifestyle.
The one big factor that is not well covered is that of stress - a
significant component of cholesterol and cardiovascular disease risk.
If you want to tackle the stress in your life you will find a range
of tips and resources here:
http://www.stress-counselling.co.uk
plus we have a range of stress-reduction workshops in the Cambridge
and Newmarket areas listed here:
http://www.sunflower-health.com/workshops.htm
If you suffer from raised blood pressure, you might find the
forthcoming "anger management and release" workshop especially
helpful. Frustration, anger and rage are very good at raising our
blood pressure. If we are disconnected from these emotions ("I never
get angry") they can build-up in our system and over time lead to
illness.
