The Radio "Food Programme" had an interesting update today on the suspecteed
links between Diet and Prostate Cancer. The programme will continue to be
available online fr a while...

One of the speakers is Professor Margaret Rayman who has just this month
published a new book:
"Healthy Eating: The Prostate Care Cookbook" [June 2009]

[published in association with Prostate Cancer Research Foundation]

Over 30,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and
around 10,000 die from it. Many more men suffer from benign prostatic
hypertrophy or prostatitis [see below].

Diet and Prostate Health
========================
Evidence clearly points to diet being a significant factor in development of
cancer. Several instances have been reported of increased prostate cancer in
populations who have switched from their traditional diet to Western-style
foods. And although there is much more to be learned on this topic, we can be
fairly certain from research findings that those who consume a diet rich in meat
and dairy have a higher incidence of prostate cancer that those who don't.
On a more positive note, there is much talk now about how your diet and
lifestyle, and in particular some specific food groups, can delay or even
possibly prevent cancer. Here are a couple of examples.

Pomegranates
------------
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4284382.stm
Previous research has shown pomegranate extract is effective against tumours in
mouse skin.
And scientists in Israel have shown that drinking a daily glass of the fruit's
juice can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The Wisconsin team first tested the juice on laboratory cultures of human
prostate cancer cells. They found the extract killed the cancer cells - and the
higher the dose, the more cells died. Next the team injected mice with human
prostate cancer cells. One group was given pure water, and two others received
water supplemented with 0.1% or 0.2% pomegranate juice. Cancer progression was
significantly slowed in mice receiving the higher pomegranate dose. Their blood
contained decreased levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a marker commonly
used to monitor prostate cancer. In comparison, tumours grew much faster in
animals that were given only water.
Lead researcher Professor Hasan Mukhtar said: "Our study, while early, adds to
growing evidence that pomegranates contain very powerful agents against cancer,
particularly prostate cancer.

Vitamin D
---------
There has also been research that suggests that sunlight can help reduce the
risk of prostate cancer. It is thought that the body's manufacture of Vitamin D
which is produced after exposure to sunlight helps protect the prostate.

Hormone therapy
===============
is a common treatment for prostate cancer. The side effects associated with
hormone therapy can have a significant impact on the lives of men and their
partners. Unfortunately, many men receive too little information and support to
help them cope with the impact of the side effects of hormone therapy. The
partners of men also need better information and support to help them cope with
the effect the treatment has on their lives.

The Prostate Cancer Charity has launched the "Hampered by Hormones?" campaign to
highlight the experience of men (and the partners of men) who receive the
treatment and call on Government and the NHS to improve the standard of care

Prostate Cancer Statistics
==========================
http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/cancerstats/types/prostate/

•Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. A quarter of all
new cases of cancer diagnosed in men are prostate cancers.
•In 2005, more than 34,000 men in the UK were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
•Over the last 30 years prostate cancer rates in Great Britain have almost
tripled, although much of the increase is due to increased detection through
widespread use of the PSA test.
•Almost 60% of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in men aged over 70 years.
•Around 300,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in Europe each year.
The lowest rates are in Southern and Eastern Europe and the highest rates are in
Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
•Worldwide, more than 670,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.
The highest rates are in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Western and Northern
Europe whilst the lowest rates are in East and South Central Asia.
