What a great way to learn and share the art of healing with loved ones!
I have just returned from a week's worth of learning Thai Massage (level 1) at Spirit Winds School of Thai Massage in Nevada City, CA. There are at least four (4) levels to learn, and in six (6) weeks from now, I will return to Nevada City to learn level 2.
In order for me to become proficient at my new modality, I am looking for willing volunteers. But first, let me explain what Thai massage is...
Traditional Ancient Thai massage is a unique form of Bodywork that incorporates Hatha Yoga, acupressure and reflexology with origins dating back about 2500 years. Thai Massage blends styles from Asian neighbors passed down through the generations. Unlike the scooping and continuous strokes of Western massage, the Thai method uses point pressure, muscle stretching and compression, done in a rhythmic movement of gentle rocking.
In Thai massage it is not just the hands that are used to free tension from the recipient's body, but the therapists feet, forearms, knees, and elbows as well. Be assured northern style Thai massage is never painful. Thai massage is applied on a mat on the floor, the work is done with the client being fully clothed and no oils are required.
Thai medical massage (southern style) can move deeper into the mechanical functions of the body, working with deep muscle tension and joint mobility as well as nerve, muscle and ligament balancing.
The session will last between 1.5 to 2 hours. For only $60 for this introductory session (this will become $100 in a few months), I am looking for a handful of people to practice on. I will only limit practicing Thai Massage to 2 sessions per week, so call and reserve your time today!
I am sure that you will enjoy this different form of massage as much as I have! I don't think I can ever go back to receiving regular Swedish Massage after last week!
By popular demand, Massage for Couples workshops have returned! Workshops will be held in the adjacent room to Century Massage & Bodywork, LLC in the lower level of the Evergreen Building in downtown Renton.

I am certainly doing a lot of learning as I put together this new business entity. So from now on, the official business name is:

The left side demonstrates the vascular system of arteries and veins. The right side shows the lymph nodes and direction of lymphatic flow away from the breast.
While one in eight women will find themselves in the grasp of breast cancer during their lifetime, you don't necessarily have to be one of them. The information provided in this brochure will give you some insight into how your breasts work and what you can do to keep them functioning properly.
The goal of this email is to help in the prevention of breast cancer. It doesn't make sense to leave your health to chance. Even the Self Breast Exam is designed to help you after you get a tumor or breast cancer. This is not to say that you shouldn't regularly check yourself for lumps. Early detection does greatly increase your odds of surviving cancer. However, waiting for cancer rather than actively participating in its avoidance can be detrimental too your health.
Your breasts are essentially structures made up of fat and gland, mounted to the female's chest wall with a delicate system of ligaments. The circulation in the breast is much the same as the rest of the body consisting of arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. In short, the arteries bring fresh blood too the cells carrying along with it the nutrition that the breast and its tissues need for proper health. The veins bring the blood back from the cells along with cellular waste and toxins. The lymphaticsystemis designed to return the toxin and other waste materials that lie in the intercellular fluid between the cells.
Toxins are believed by many to be the local beginnings of cancerous tissue. It is imperative that these toxins be continually removed through the body's veins and lymphatic vessels. When these toxins are unable to exit the body properly, the possibility of cancer increases.
A recent study* of 4,700 women found that women who wore brassieres had an increased chance of acquiring breast cancer. It is very possible that the constant pressure that the bra puts on the breast is limiting the flow of toxins that need to be released, resulting in the increased cancer rate. Any more than a gentle amount of pressure can flatten the lymphatic vessel and stop the toxic flow from the breast.
The Study found the highest rate of breast cancer in those who wore bras 24 hours a day, and the lowest rate in those who never wore bras. The study suggested that women should wear their bra less than 12 hours a day.

Self Care
Now that you have a better understanding of your breasts, it is important that you apply this knowledge to your health. The four-step procedure shown on this page will give you a simple massage technique that can be done, by yourself,in the privacy of your own home. Although almost any gentle massage technique will be of benefit, these four techniques should be a part of your personal regimen.
The purpose of these techniques is to flush fluids from the breast, (both venous and intercellular), bring nutrition to the tissues and specifically remove the toxins via the lymphatic system. Also, these techniques will enhance the health and elasticity of the support ligaments, which will in turn provide you with better breast support.
More specifically, step One is a gentle draining motion designed to drain the breasts lymphatic system and is possibly the most important of the four steps.Steps number Two and Four are to assist in the movement of venous fluids. Feel free to experiment with these to movements and find what is comfortable for you. Step Three is simply to help keep your support ligaments in good health and assist in the fight against gravity.
This procedure should be done at least twice a week. It can be done on bare skin, but you may find that using some vegetable oil may be more comfortable. Stay away from mineral-based or scented oils.
Step One: Use your fingers to gently smooth away from the nipple. These movements travel from the nipple and directly away using no more pressure than what you would apply to your eyelid. Any more pressure would flatten the lymphatic vessel and stop the flow of toxins and fluids. Also, make this stroke slow, not fast, for it to be effective. Step Two: Gently massage the breast with a kneading-like motion, using lifting and pressing movements.Step Three: Slowly and carefully use your hands to twist the breast in a clock-wise and counterclockwise direction, being careful not to put too much tension on the breast.Step Four: Use both hands as shown to apply several, moderate pressure, compressions to move out more pressure fluids.
A good breast massage should be gentle and nurturing. The gentle stimulation of the breasts and chest area may release some emotional feelings. During massage, many people experience joy, peace, or sometimes a release of previously-repressed emotions from past events (positive or negative, including possibly crying) followed by a more deep relaxation. This emotional release is also a very normal, human part of the massage experience. For most women, the enjoyment of breast massage is a natural, sensual pleasure and very relaxing.
For those who may not wish their breast massage to be as pleasurable or arousing, the type, speed, and pressure of the strokes can be regulated if necessary to control this sensation of pleasure and arousal. Again, individual preferences and sensitivities vary; for example, some may find firm strokes to be arousing while others may find light caressing to be overly erotic.
Your massage therapist will be able to assist you in how to properly apply the self-care techniques mentioned above, if needed.
About Breast Cancer in Men
Breast cancer in men is rare -- less than 1 percent of all breast carcinomas occur in men.
* About 1,300 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 1998, and about 400 men will die of the disease.
* The average age at diagnosis is between 60 and 70, although men of all ages can be affected with the disease.
I do hope that your Holiday Season was filled with many fond memories, and that the New Year will be the same if not better!
Please be advised that I will be unavailable from February 8 through the 15th and again March 28 through April 5. I will be attending a (split) two-week intensive Thai Massage Workshop in Northern California.
For those whom I have not seen in my office for month or so, please give me a call to set up an appointments for before I leave or after I return.
In an event that you should require massage treatment while I am away, I will have several colleagues on "stand-by".
Please feel free to give me a call or email if you have any question.
Thank you.

It's the New Year, and I just wanted to give everyone the heads up as to what 2003 is starting to look like.
I am one of Tim Kneeland Associate's top massage therapists on their many bicycle tours that they hold every year. Their website is www.owct.com. I have been corresponding with Tim about 2003, and he is counting on me to be available on many of his treks (what I call work-vacations) for the upcoming New Year.
Here are the dates that I will most likely be out of town:
Jun 2 - Jul 28, 2003 - Coast to Coast Bicycle Classic
Aug 3 - 9, 2003 - Washington Alps
Sep 7 - 13, 2003 - Wheeling Washington
Sep 20 - 27, 2003 - California Coast Classic (San Francisco to L.A. )
Oct 18 - 25, 2003 - Viva Las Vegas
Nov 15 - 22, 2003 - Tour Tucson Tour de Tucson
Apr 11 - Jun 5, 2004 - Southern Cross (Disneyland to Disney World)
Sep 20 - Oct 23, 2004 - Westcoast International
Most of the cycling treks are a week long, but there are several events (Coast to Coast, Southern Cross, and Westcoast International) that will require me to be away for a period of 4 to 7 weeks. In those particular events, I will find a massage therapist (if needed) who will cover for me while I am out of town.
These events are not confirmed (other than the Thai Massage Workshops). It all depends on the number of cyclists for each event to warrant a massage therapist to be a part of the TK&A staff. I will inform everyone when TK&A confirms each event for me as much advanced notice as I can.
Please call or email me if you should have questions.

Stress Impedes Proper Blood Flow: Study Mon May 20, 6:29 PM ET
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Stress appears to inhibit the ability of
blood vessels to expand--a problem that may explain why extremely
stressful events can precipitate heart attacks, new study findings
suggest.
Sudden stress, such as that related to anger, bereavement or war, can
trigger heart attacks or sudden cardiac death, according to Dr. Georg
Noll of the University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. However, it is
not clear how such stressful events affect the heart.
In the study, Noll and his team used ultrasound to look at the blood
vessels of 23 healthy people as they performed a stressful task--quickly
pushing buttons in response to flashing lights. Typically, the
endothelium--the lining of the blood vessels--can boost blood flow as
needed to supply oxygen to muscle, including the heart.
The investigators found that the stress cut the ability of the
endothelium to respond by 50% for about 45 minutes. The 3-minute mental
stress test also caused both blood pressure and heart rate to temporarily
increase, according to the report released May 21st in the rapid access
issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.
Further tests suggested that blocking a receptor called ETa, which is
found on cells of the endothelium, could block the blood
vessel-constricting effects of stress.
"This study provides the first evidence that sudden mental stress
induces prolonged endothelial dysfunction via activation of ETa
receptors," the authors report.
The finding provides a clue as to why stressful events could spell
trouble for people who already have narrowed or blocked arteries. Stress
may act to compound already restricted blood flow that could lead to a
heart attack or stroke.
Blocking ETa receptors could "represent a new therapeutic
strategy" in the prevention of heart disease-related problems, Noll
and colleagues conclude.

Manual Therapy Works Best for Neck Pain in
Study Mon May 20, 6:30 PM ET
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - For some nagging neck pain, so-called
manual therapy may be more effective than exercise, painkillers and other
standard treatments, new study findings suggest.
This "hands-on" technique, in which the neck is manipulated to
improve mobility, worked better than exercise therapy or routine care
from a doctor for patients with neck pain due to muscle or joint
strain.
Researchers led by Dr. Jan Lucas Hoving of Monash University in Victoria,
Australia, report the findings in the May 21st issue of the Annals of
Internal Medicine.
Manual therapy is commonly used by chiropractors, physical therapists,
massage therapists and doctors known as osteopaths. Unlike exercise
therapy, in which patients perform a given activity, manual therapy
demands that the patient be "passive" as the therapist moves
the neck.
In this study, the researchers used specific "mobilization"
techniques--which refers to moving the joint within a patient's range of
motion, using slowly applied pressure.
They assigned 183 patients to have either manual therapy, exercise
therapy or to continue routine care from their doctors--including advice
on home exercises and prescriptions for pain medication--over 6 weeks.
All patients were allowed to continue on any pain medication they had
been taking.
At the end of the study, about 68% of manual-therapy patients said they
were "completely recovered" or "much improved,"
according to the report. That compared with 51% of those on exercise
therapy and 36% of patients continuing their usual care.
"Manual therapy seems to be a favourable treatment option for
patients with neck pain," Hoving's team concludes.
However, the study has "drawbacks" that make applying the
findings "difficult," Drs. Joel Posner and Catherine Glew of
MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, write in an
accompanying editorial.
For one, it relied on patients' subjective perceptions of their recovery.
In addition, the editorialists assert, because the study authors are
"advocates of manual therapy," the role of "therapeutic
enthusiasm should not be underestimated."
But, Posner and Glew add, if the manual therapy in this study was indeed
more effective, more research should look into which specific aspects
worked.
In addition to mobilization techniques like that in the study, manual
therapy can involve so-called manipulation--in which "high-velocity
thrusts" are used to push the joint beyond the range patients can
manage on their own.
One recent study in Canada suggested that chiropractic neck manipulation
can potentially cause tears in the inside wall of neck arteries that
often lead to stroke. The American Chiropractic Association refuted that
link, saying the study failed to demonstrate neck manipulation as the
cause of stroke among the 38 patients.

I have just come back from a little trip along the California coastline
following a group of bicyclists who raised $375,000 for the Arthritis
Foundation. You may check out pictures of the ride at
http://www.californiacoastclassic.org/
(I seem to be having difficulties getting to the website)
This ride started in San Francisco and ended up in Universal City in Los Angeles. There were 89 riders. One of the riders, Scot, was on a unicycle. Every town we were in, Scot was the center of attention in the media. ALL the riders and the staff were amazed at Scot's physical accomplishment. You have to understand that a unicycle ha only ONE gear, and it takes practically ALL your muscles in your body to stay upright and balanced up and to control descents on down hills. He is one amazing guy! Actually, everyone involved were amazing!
Before the California Coast Classic, I was around the Puget Sound with Tim Kneeland & Associates with their Wheeling Washington tour, another fun cycling event that I was very fortunate to be involved in.
All fun things must come to an end, and here I am back in good ol' Seattle! And I hope to be seeing some of you in the near future. I hope everyone is enjoying the fall season that seemed to have creeped up while I was away. :)
