Good news Everyone!

I just received a bulletin from my PPO Network, First Choice Health Network, that Group Health Options, Inc. (GHO), a subsidiary of Group Health Cooperative, have now access to the First Choice Health Network (FCHN) in Washington and Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and Oregon as of January 1, 2007. We at Century Massage & Bodywork are a member of FCHN.

Since this is the first month of the year, you may still be waiting for your new ID card. Please make sure that the FCHN logo is on the back of your card. You will need to bring your ID card on your first visit and every time you receive a new card from your employer. We will verify coverage and let you know what we find out. Be sure that you receive a referral from your prescribing physician for massage therapy, since the insurance usually needs this to pay a claim.

Please call our office at 425-228-5217, if you have questions regarding the content of this email.

Hello Everyone!

Renton Technical College (RTC) is looking for students to join their Winter quarter Massage Therapy Program. Due to the immediate need for students, RTC has decided to implement payment plans which decreases the cost of the program up front. This means that if you are interested in a career as a Licensed Massage Practitioner, there is now the perfect opportunity for you to get one of the best educations in the subject that Washington State has to offer at a fraction of the cost.

Personally, I am a graduate of the program in 1999 and highly recommend RTC over the "other schools" for the very reasons listed below:

---------------------

Renton Technical College massage program
1092 hour 9 month program
"evening program"  3-9:30 PM Mon-Fri   begins Jan 2nd
"day program"  7-2:30 Mon-Fri begins in September

*  The most affordable, high quality 1,000+ program (approximately 1/5 of the cost of the private schools of comparable length and quality).  RTC's massage program costs less because it receives state and federal subsidies.
*  Students qualify for financial aid
*  Prepares students well for licensing exam (all of Zefire's graduates have passed the national exam - almost all received high marks in every subject area)
*  Excellent clinic & externship program included as part of the education at massage clinics, chiropractic clinics, athletic clubs, assisted care facilities, hospitals, private practices and other settings.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to get a flavor for working in different settings to see what is a good fit for them.  Many students get jobs with their externship sites!
*  RTC provides "maniken's," a system for sculpting muscles in clay (this is an excellent educational tool.  All other schools that utilize this system require the students to buy the manikens)
*  RTC's massage program utilizes a combination of high tech teaching tools, like the extensive use of excellent, visually appealing powerpoints and lots of fun activities and games to make the learning easy and fun.
*  RTC's massage program provides students with an excellent foundation in massage skills:  excellent palpation skills, a strong foundation in Swedish massage, the knowledge and skills necessary for specific injury treatment, and a broad introduction to the wide variety of massage modalities including asian modalities (Zefire is a licensed acupuncturist with her master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine).  Graduates immediately out of school have been told by clients who have received many massages that they seem as qualified as therapists who have been practicing for years.
*  Students practice seated massage in the field, which is an excellent marketing tool
*  Students learn sport's massage (and have access to sport massage events), pregnancy massage, reflexology, myofascial release, trigger point release, lymphatic drainage and more
*  Both instructors have 15 years of experience as massage practitioners
*  Free tutoring available
*  Strong didactic coursework in kinesiology, anatomy and physiology and pathology
*  Very professional program
*  One instructor format provides accessible instructors, personal attention and flexibility to meet the students' needs.

Feel free to email the evening instructor Zefire Skoczen, LMP, LAc, MTCM

As the holiday season gets closer, the massage staff at Century Massage & Bodywork (CM&B) is teaming up with Renton Pure Fitness to help support those that are less fortunate. In cooperation with the Renton Community and city ministries, we are hosting our 5th Annual Holiday Food Drive.

When you donate non-perishable food items at Renton Pure Fitness, you will be rewarded with "holiday dollars." At the end of the food drive on December 19th, Pure Fitness will be holding a charity auction so you can redeem those "holiday dollars" for gifts and prizes in appreciation for your efforts. If you would prefer to drop off your non-perishable food items to Century Massage and Bodywork, you are welcome to do so, however we are unable to exchange "holiday dollars" for your donation.

If you happen to own or be a part of a company that does charitable contributions, donate gift certificates, services, and/or merchandise, please contact the Renton Pure Fitness club management for details. Their number is (425) 272-1300.

CM&B is donating two (2) 30-minute massage sessions and a BIOFREEZE cryospray. All donations from your company are tax deductible (tax ID# 86-1043723). All businesses who makes a donation will be recognized for their sponsorship and generosity.

In addition, CM&B is set to provide complimentary 10-minute massages at Pure Fitness between 4PM and 6PM on November 30th. Please come and say hello and receive a complimentary massage while you're there.

As an added bonus for your generosity, this email will serve as your "Holiday Guess Pass" when you print and bring with you when you visit Renton Pure Fitness. This pass includes club access until December 25, 2006 - PLUS -  two (2) free sessions with a Personal Trainer. Please ask for my three favorite people at the club: Will Baldyga (club director), Christen and Joseph (personal trainers).

Thank you for your cooperation in this event, and we hope that we can raise over 40,000 food items for thousands of local families.

Have a safe, Happy Holiday.

Greetings to all!

I hope this email finds you well. This is certainly the season of wet, slippery roads, which usually spells auto accidents for a lot of us. If and when you do fnid yourself in an auto accident, make sure you are have the following coverage:

Personal Injury Protection, or what we call PIP in our profession, is part of your auto insurance policy. It is designed to take care of you immediately after an accident regardless of whose fault the accident was.

PIP covers medical bills, a portion of your weekly lost wages, and for household care and cleaning. Your insurance company, by law, cannot cancel your policy for using your PIP. If you have not rejected PIP coverage in writing, then you are deemed to have it. Your insurance company, by law, cannot increase your insurance rates for using your PIP. PIP is no-fault, so it doesn't matter who caused the accident, you're still covered. There is no deductible and coverage is for 3 years or $10,000, which ever comes first. Some policies have higher limits. If you have coverage on your auto policy, your medical bills get paid on time and you can maintain your treatment schedule uninterrupted.

Step-By-Step Guide:
  • Call your insurance agent
  • Ask if you have PIP or MedPay (a version of PIP minus wage or loss of services coverage). If yes, ask about limits on time and dollar amount (3 years/ $10,000).
  • Ask your agent to take your Report of Loss claim
  • Ask your agent to phone in your report to the claims office
  • Ask your agent to call back with the claim number, address and phone number of the claims office
  • Call the claims office and get the name of the claims adjuster handling your claim
  • Ask the claims adjuster to mail a PIP Application, Attending Physician's Report and Salary Verification forms
  • Complete the PIP Application and return it to the claims adjuster
  • Have your employer complete the Salary Verification form and return it to you. Mail to the claims adjuster
  • Provide your claim number and the adjuster's name, office address and phone number to all your Health Care Providers
  • Instruct your Health Care Providers to bill your PIP carrier directly

We at Century Massage & Bodywork welcome your PIP (auto) claims as well Labor & Industries and Medical claims. Just give us a call if you have questions. We'll even verify coverage for you.

Be safe out there!

Subject: On-site seated massage at YOUR office during the Holiday Season!

Hello, Everyone!

I am happy to announce that Century Massage & Bodywork has put together a team of licensed massage practitioners to do on-site seated massage for the office for just the holidays or may be continued on the following year.

It's well-documented that stress on or off the job costs U.S. businesses an estimated $200 billion a year in reduced productivity, accidents, compensation claims, absenteeism, employee turnover, health insurance and medical expenses. Statistics show that over 50% of lost work days are stress-related and 14% of workers say stress caused them to quit or change jobs in the previous two years.[i] -- Simply put, stress cost businesses money.

We at Century Massage and Bodywork have been working with corporate offices to reduce the effects of stress on their employees for the last 6 years by offering on-site chair massage. Companies we have had the pleasure of working with include: Paccar, Honeywell, Microsoft, NetVersant, Crow Roofing, Olympic Pipeline (a BP affiliate) and  T-mobile. All with great success and well received by the employees and management.

Seated massage is quite affordable. You pay only for employees who use it or employees can pay part or all of the cost. Massages can take place on break time so no work time is lost and there is no up-front investment.

Our proposal is to provide on-site chair massage within various departments for a day of a week-long period. Before we know it, the busy and often stressful Christmas season will be here and the most opportune time to hold a Wellness Week would be within the first two weeks of December. The cost would be $1 a minute, hoping that enough departments would take part in this special.

We would be more than happy to come in for a face to face meeting and a short demonstration at no cost. Feel free to check out our website, give us a call, email us or ask for a free "On-Site Seated Massage" brochure.

Please feel free to forward this email to the your employer, supervisor, or a wellness coordinator at your workplace to see if a Wellness Day or a Wellness Week might be something your place of work might want to do for its hard-working employees.

Thank you for your time.

The following is an excerpt from the book In Control by Redford Williams, MD, and Virginia Williams, PhD Published by Rodale; February 2006;$24.95US/$33.95CAN; 1-59486-256-7 Copyright © 2006 Redford Williams, MD, and Virginia Williams, PhD Negativity and Health

Hostility isn't the only negative trait that can have an impact on people's health. Behavioral medicine research has identified a number of other risk factors with a definite link to serious health problems.

Depression. The negative impact of depression also increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease, and people who are depressed after having a heart attack are more likely to die within the following 6 months. Several studies have shown that patients with any disease -- diabetes is one example -- who are depressed end up needing more medical care, accounting for a disproportionate amount of medical costs.

Lack of adequate social support. People who have little support -- whether it's help with chores at home or someone to listen sympathetically -- are also more at risk. Social support acts as a buffer that enables people to cope better with whatever stresses they face, whether they're imposed by personality or life situations. Support is a function of both the person and the environment. Those of us who have a cynical mistrust of others are less likely to reach out for support, and some of us find ourselves in situations that simply don't include people who can be sources of support.

Stressful environments. Jobs that impose high demands for output of services or products but allow workers little control over how those demands are met have been termed high-strain jobs. Psychologists Robert Karasek, PhD, of the University of Massachusetts, and Tores Theorell, MD, PhD, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, have documented that people working in high-strain jobs are more likely to develop high blood pressure, infections, and job-related injuries, as well as heart disease.

Risky behaviors. People who are hostile, depressed, isolated, or in stressful life situations are more likely to overeat, smoke, and abuse alcohol.

Studies show that these different risk factors often cluster in the same individual. For example, in a study of working women, Redford and his colleagues found that those who reported high job strain were also more depressed, hostile, and socially isolated. As in people with high levels of hostility, these other psychosocial risk factors are associated with changes in biological functions, such as increases in adrenaline and cortisol, blood pressure and heart rate surges, higher cholesterol levels, and alterations in the immune system and blood-clotting mechanisms. All of these changes are felt to lead to disease.

Redford's research has continued to build upon the observation that these risk factors, along with the accompanying biological markers of stress and health-damaging behaviors, tend to cluster among certain groups. The people most likely to be affected are those stressed by lower income, education, and/or occupational levels. This clustering may be the result of reduced brain levels of the chemical serotonin, a neurotransmitter that nerves use to relay messages to one another. When serotonin levels are low, we are more likely to be angry, depressed, and anxious; to be less interested in relating to other people; to have greater fight-or-flight responses when stressed; and to smoke, drink, and eat more than is good for us. If true, this theory could point to the brain's serotonin system as a key neurobiological mechanism that regulates our ability to be in control. Two studies have found weaker brain serotonin function in persons with lower income and education levels.

In his most recent research, Redford has begun to study how genes that are involved in regulation of serotonin affect all of these health-damaging psychosocial, biological, and behavioral characteristics. This work is still in an early stage, but we have some likely hypotheses for where it will go. The serotonin "transporter" is a molecule that sits on the surface of serotonin nerve end. It's responsible for the reuptake of serotonin -- squelching the effects of the neurotransmitter after it's been released from the nerve endings. The gene responsible for making this transporter comes in various forms. Certain of these forms seem to make a person more likely to experience negative emotions, such as anger and depression, and to have greater adrenaline, blood pressure, and heart rate surges when angered.

Redford's ongoing work aims to identify the interactions between key genes and the environment and to help account for the clustering of health-damaging characteristics in the same individuals and groups. No doubt, we'll also learn more about how genes affect our ability to be in control in stressful situations.

Luck was on my side the past few weeks, coz I was lucky enough to bring together a great bunch of people to join the Century Sports Massage Team for this year's Courage Classic (WA) and MS-150 (OR), two seperate events on the same weekend of August 5-6.

Since I was personally running the show for the MS-150 in Oregon, I had the help of Karen Nagumo to run the Courage Classic. From what I've been told by the Courage Classic members, she did a fantastic job. Karen, wanna run next year's team? :)

The team was put together at the last minute, but everyone worked as a team. A few glitches here and there, but nothing that we couldn't handle. The best part of my event was massaging George Hincapie of Team Discovery (the same team Lance Armstrong rides with at Tour de France).

I want to give credit where it's due, so I am thrilled to have the following therapists as members of Century Sports Massage Team:

Karen Nagumo, LMP (WA)
Amy Bennett, LMT (OR)
Cy Wong, LMP (WA)
Rick Sneed, LMP (WA)
Angela Severson, LMT (OR)
Johannes Venghaus, LMT (OR)
Jason Johnson, LMT (OR)
Bryn Stanbury, LMT (OR)
Tena Sadowski, LMP (WA)
Carrie Philips, LMP (WA)
Gordon McWhirter, LMP (WA)
Robbin Blake, LMP (WA)
Troy Hepler, LMT (OR)
Natasha Spriggs, LMT (OR)
and Reggie Remigio (student LMP) (WA)

Thank you everyone! Cycling season is still going on. There are still the Emerald City Lights Bike Tour, California Coast Classic, Big Sur Bicycle Classic, and a possible Hawaiian Bike Tour.

I will be putting up a link page on the company website if every therapist would send in a picture and a few lines describing their work and specialties.

Thank you all! And thank you to Anna Marie Mazzone who has decided to take on the full 7 weeks of the Big Ride Across America so that I could run the office and the two events here at home. I owe her a few massages for that! :)

FDA issues warning against popular anti-inflammatory drugs

Article contributed by Dr. Scott Stachelek, Dumfries, VA

Have you ever taken Ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) or Naproxen (Aleve/Naprosyn) to alleviate pain? If so, you are like millions of others who seek temporary relief from these popular medications. These drugs as well as the Cox-2 inhibitors Vioxx, Bextra and Celebrex are known as non-steroidal anti-inflmaatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Serious side effects of NSAIDs have been known for a while. A December 1, 1998, story in USA Today noted that 16,500 people died from bleeding stomach ulcers brought on by NSAID use and that 80% of those had no symptoms prior to death. A Danish study published in the British Medical Journal in January 2001 found a strong link between the of prescription NSAIDs by pregnant women and miscarriages.

In addition, it has been discovered recently that NSAIDs may cause another life-threatening side effect: cardiovascular disease. This risk is so substantial that that US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a warning urging the public to limit the use od NSADIs and to strictly adhere to label directions. Furthermore, on voluntary withdraw Bextra from the market and urged manufactureres of all other NSAID products to strengthen warning labels.

A study sponsored by The National Institute on Aging to determine whether Celebrex or Naproxen could prevent Alzheimer's disease was halted when it became aparent that those taking Naproxen developed a 50% higher risk of heart attack and stroke that those taking a placebo. In fact, Naproxen is so detrimental to one's health that those who have been taking the over-the-counter (OTC) version, Aleve, for nearly three years are now advised to stop using it. People who are considering taking it are advised to limit their use to no more than 400mg per day for longer than ten days. This advisory can be a little scary for those who have been taking the prescription version Naprosyn since the previous recommended daily intake was 1500mg.

Lifetime wellness does not come from a pill or a potion. If you are taking NSAIDs for temporary pain relief you will want to consider finding a healthier option. For millions of Americans. even those suffering from arthritis, wellness alternative health care like (massage & chiropratic) are healthier options.

The health choices you make today will affect your quality of life tomorrow. Make educated choices and share your knowledge with the people you love so they too can avoid problematic painkillers and enjoy the healthy solution that alternative health care provides.

It is my regret to inform everyone that Tom Huber will be going back
to school and moving to Seattle. Due to the longer commute and lack
of availability, he will not be in the office for regular
appointments starting mid August. He will only be helping us out as
a back-up therapist when Anna Marie and Lyn are not available and
helping us out on sporting events.

I will be taking on a third therapist hopefully by mid-October. If
you know of anyone who may be an asset to Century Massage &
Bodywork, please do not hesistate to give them our information.

We are looking for an individual who has a strong work ethics and
moral character; professional; a team player; willing to market
him/herself; leans towards sports/medical massage/bodywork;
willingness to educate clients; and enjoy their profession.

Good luck Tom!

I hope everyone is enjoying this great weather we have here in
Seattle! I sure am! :)

I just wanted to inform everyone that I will be working every Friday
with Dr. Perry Chinn at Interurban Chiropractic Clinic in Tukwila for
the next 4 weeks.

I will still be available Monday-Thursday for massage appointments at
our office clinic at CM&B in Renton. I'm just helping out Dr. Perry and see if I
could also get him to refer clients to our office when I'm not
available at his office.

I think this is a win-win situation. :)

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to email or call me.

Enjoy the sunshine!!

My friend and colleague, Anna Marie, has been following 41 cyclists bicycle their way across the continental US for 2 weeks now. The cyclists started out in Seattle and will end up in Washington, DC in 7 weeks. Both of us thinking that no one could last the whole 7 weeks, the original plan was to have Anna Marie and I switch by the third week so that I could take over the last 4 weeks of the ride.

I regret to inform you, especially those of you waiting for Anna Marie's return, that we have mutually agreed that I stay and manage the office while she remains with "her cyclists." Yes, she has gotten very much attached to the riders.

Not to worry... Anna Marie will return to provided massages at the clinic when she returns around the third week of August. The ride will end August 12, but she will have to drive back from the east coast back to Seattle.

Our apologies to those inconvenienced by this news, but the good news is that there will now be Tom and myself be available for massage appointments.

If you should have questions, suggestions, or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

Thank you so much for your understanding.
