Greetings to all!
This past two snowy weekend, making our roads very hazardous, usually spells
auto
accidents for some of us. I have been taking in more new patients after a few
days of
rain/snow and during our wet and snowy season due to auto-related accidents, and
I
found out four years ago that I am not immune to them.
Personal Injury Protection, or what we call PIP in our profession, is part of
your auto
insurance policy. It is designed to take care of you immediately after an
accident
regardless of whose fault the accident was.
PIP covers medical bills, a portion of your weekly lost wages, and for household
care and
cleaning. Your insurance company, by law, cannot cancel your policy for using
your PIP. If
you have not rejected PIP coverage in writing, then you are deemed to have it.
Your
insurance company, by law, cannot increase your insurance rates for using your
PIP. PIP is
no-fault, so it doesn't matter who caused the accident, you're still covered.
There is no
deductible and coverage is for 3 years or $10,000, which ever comes first. Some
policies
have higher limits. If you have coverage on your auto policy, your medical bills
get paid on
time and you can maintain your treatment schedule uninterrupted.
Step-By-Step Guide:
Call your insurance agent
Ask if you have PIP or MedPay (a version of PIP minus wage or loss of services
coverage). If
yes, ask about limits on time and dollar amount (3 years/ $10,000).
Ask your agent to take your Report of Loss claim
Ask your agent to phone in your report to the claims office
Ask your agent to call back with the claim number, address and phone number of
the
claims office
Call the claims office and get the name of the claims adjuster handling your
claim
Ask the claims adjuster to mail a PIP Application, Attending Physician's Report
and Salary
Verification forms
Complete the PIP Application and return it to the claims adjuster
Have your employer complete the Salary Verification form and return it to you.
Mail to the
claims adjuster
Provide your claim number and the adjuster's name, office address and phone
number to
all your Health Care Providers
Instruct your Health Care Providers to bill your PIP carrier directly
We at Century Massage & Bodywork welcome your PIP (auto) claims as well Labor &
Industries and Medical claims (FCHN preferred provider). Just give us a call if
you have
questions. We'll even verify coverage for you.
Be safe out there!

Here's an article from the Anchorage Daily News featuring my aunt's Feng Shui consulting business. If you would like consult with Emy Aurigue into changing bad energy in your home and/or workplace into good, please give her a call at Feng Shui Alaska (907)868-4689 or email her at EmyAurigue@....
My aunt has given me some great advice that I followed, and business went up in 2007 and still growing in 2008. I'm going to see about having her visit the Pacific NW sometime in the near future for consultations...
Anchorage woman turns bad energy into good
Injured, out of work, Emy Aurigue used feng shui to change her life
Published: February 25th, 2008 12:05 AM Last Modified: February 25th, 2008 05:04 AM
Inside a small Dimond storefront, among
trickling electric waterfalls and curls of incense smoke, Emy Aurigue
clicked past a chubby gilded Buddha in a pair of lime-green mules. She
wore a green shirt and a matching green necklace. The outfit was
cosmic, she explained.
"For every one of us, we have our self elements. For me, green is an energizing color."
A
decade ago, Aurigue, a mother of four from the Philippines, found
herself bankrupt, injured and out of work. She resurrected her life,
she said, by changing the energy in her house using feng shui, a
practice that involves changing the arrangement and colors in rooms
based on Chinese astrological calculations.
"It was a tremendous change. It really gives me a sense of peace and comfort," she said.
Books
fed her interest, and led her to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she
studied at the Institute of Feng Shui. Soon she began advising friends,
and then, in 2006, she opened Feng Shui Alaska, offering consultations,
crystals, Buddha statues, New Age music and espresso.
Feng
shui may have faded from fashion Outside, but not in Anchorage, where
interest in her business continues to grow, she said. So far, Aurigue
says, she's helped a hundred clients rearrange their homes and
businesses to bring good luck, good health and prosperity. She charges
80 cents a square foot.
"Every time you fix things, you're activating more of the good energy," she said.
This
month is especially busy because it marks the beginning of the year of
the rat in the Chinese astrological calendar. Aurigue's been telling a
lot of new year fortunes, though she prefers to call it "destiny
analysis."
In general, the year of
the rat is a good time to begin things: romances, marriages, having
children, new careers. But in terms of calamities, the forecast is not
too good. Across the world, people can expect floods, mudslides,
earthquakes and strange weather, spurred by the warming earth.
"Don't live too close to water," she said.
There
are remedies: Water in a southeastern corner helps activate prosperity.
A big metal object at the south side drains the bad energy.
CAUTIOUS CLIENTELE
Many
who come to her are middle-aged women looking for a change. She advises
painting front doors red, placing metallic objects in certain spots,
incorporating new colors into wardrobes and moving beds away from the
door. Some come secretly, asking her about help with relationships gone
cold and dreams of changing careers.
"For a lot of people it's all about their wealth and their love life. The third is their health," she said.
Customers
often ask Aurigue to be discreet because they fear feng shui conflicts
with the Christian church, but Aurigue, a Catholic, assures them it is
a science. A priest even came to bless her shop, she says.
"This
is not based on religion. First is your god and whatever you do with
your faith," she said. "Then earth luck, which is based on feng shui,
how you arrange the energy in your environment."
In
early February, after consulting with other feng shui masters around
the globe, she read the fortune of the city for the coming year. Among
the highlights:
• Anchorage will have a cold spring; it may seem like it never comes and then it will suddenly be summer.
• Those living in East Anchorage will be most prosperous; property values will hold steady; businesses will do well.
•
Those in South Anchorage can expect more crime and should be on guard
against legal problems, health problems and marital issues.
• In the northwest, look out for illnesses, especially among family breadwinners. And, there could be some legal issues.
• Those living in the north should have a good year; many will get promotions.
Deborah
Fachko's interest in feng shui brought her to the storefront last year.
Aurigue detected she was deficient in her water elements. Fachko added
blue to her clothing and home.
"It helped me to become healthier emotionally, mentally and spiritually," she said.
Ginny
Jacober, a retired interior designer, took Aurigue's advice about
hanging a crystal in the center of her house. It seems to lighten her
mood, she said.
"I feel just like when you get up and have your coffee."
RELIEF FROM SUFFERING
Aurigue's
feng shui awakening came after an injury caused her to lose her job and
her family spiraled toward financial ruin. She realized that her house
wasn't a true rectangle shape because the front door was inset, carving
a square out of the southwest section of the home. The southwest
section is the mother section.
"Which is why I was suffering," she said.
She
had an uncle plant a garden around the entry-way using flowers in
auspicious colors to fill in the missing part of the rectangle.
"I got my job back, and we were able to move into a bigger house," she said.
Don't buy it? Like any belief, it's an act of faith.
Feng
shui makes people think about bringing balance to their lives, she
said. It discourages clutter, in the home and in the mind. Change takes
internal work, not just rearranging furniture.
"You
need to change your attitude first, then you change your environment,"
she said. "If you have good intentions toward other people, good will
come."

This past rainy weekend, making our roads wet and slippery, usually spells auto accidents for some of us. I have been taking in more new patients after a few days of rain and during our wet season due to auto-related accidents, and I found out three years ago that I am not immune to them.
Personal Injury Protection, or what we call PIP in our profession, is part of your auto insurance policy. It is designed to take care of you immediately after an accident regardless of whose fault the accident was.
PIP covers medical bills, a portion of your weekly lost wages, and for household care and cleaning. Your insurance company, by law, cannot cancel your policy for using your PIP. If you have not rejected PIP coverage in writing, then you are deemed to have it. Your insurance company, by law, cannot increase your insurance rates for using your PIP. PIP is no-fault, so it doesn't matter who caused the accident, you're still covered. There is no deductible and coverage is for 3 years or $10,000, which ever comes first. Some policies have higher limits. If you have coverage on your auto policy, your medical bills get paid on time and you can maintain your treatment schedule uninterrupted.
Step-By-Step Guide:
Call your insurance agent
Ask if you have PIP or MedPay (a version of PIP minus wage or loss of services coverage). If yes, ask about limits on time and dollar amount (3 years/ $10,000).
Ask your agent to take your Report of Loss claim
Ask your agent to phone in your report to the claims office
Ask your agent to call back with the claim number, address and phone number of the claims office
Call the claims office and get the name of the claims adjuster handling your claim
Ask the claims adjuster to mail a PIP Application, Attending Physician's Report and Salary Verification forms
Complete the PIP Application and return it to the claims adjuster
Have your employer complete the Salary Verification form and return it to you. Mail to the claims adjuster
Provide your claim number and the adjuster's name, office address and phone number to all your Health Care Providers
Instruct your Health Care Providers to bill your PIP carrier directly

(taken from an e-newsletter from the Arthritis Foundation)
Do you hunch forward when you’re sitting? If so, your pectoral muscles may become weak, and that can strain your upper back and neck muscles. To balance this area of your body, you need to stretch and strengthen your chest. You’ll be better able to keep your shoulders back to sit and stand up straight, which can help ease pain in your neck and back.
The pectoral muscles, which are located on the upper chest, connect your arms to your trunk and help you push things like a loaded grocery cart or lawnmower, hug a grandchild close to your heart, or just more easily perform movements using your arms and shoulders, like pumping your arms as you walk up hill.
You can build up the strength in your pecs with chest or bench presses, push-ups or the dumbbell fly. Or try the two exercises listed below; the first one you can do any time of the day.
Try These Stretches
If you have wrist or hand OA, you can modify this exercise. Stand or sit in a low-back chair. Hold your palms face out to the sides of your shoulders and your elbows about waist level, making the shape of a “W,” keeping shoulders relaxed, not hunched. Bring elbows back to pinch shoulder blades together. Hold for three counts, relax and repeat.
Stand in front of a doorway, feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. With arms bent at the elbow in a 90-degree angle, place your palms on the sides or frame of the doorway. Lean forward and you’ll feel your pectoral muscles stretch. Bonus: The muscles on the front of your shoulders get a stretch, too.

To repeat, chronically elevated cortisol levels contribute to the accumulation of abdominal fat and make it very difficult to get rid of it. The immune system is suppressed and the individual becomes more susceptible to infections, both minor and major. Clearly, we would like for our cortisol levels to return to normal.
How to Correct your Cortisol Level
Stress reduction is an essential part of all efforts to normalize cortisol. Stress is the stimuli that caused the cortisol levels to get out of hand to begin with. Each individual should explore and find the stress reduction techniques that work best for themselves. Meditation, physical activities, massage, attitude changes, and etc. are good paths to explore. Without stress reduction, all therapeutic and support measures will eventually fail.
Rest. This may sound obvious but it must be managed and scheduled as a deliberate strategy, choice, and course of action. Otherwise it gets forgotten in the busyness of life.
A low glycemic diet is important. Sugar handling stress increases cortisol levels. Elevated cortisol, in turn, aggravates the sugar handling situation contributing to the development of high insulin levels and ultimately diabetes.
Nutritional supplementation is very valuable in restoring normal cortisol levels. It is important, however, to recognize if your cortisol levels are high or low. Low cortisol levels are the consequence of adrenal exhaustion or the exhaustion phase of the stress response. High cortisol levels are the result of the response to chronic stress and represent the adaptation phase of the stress response.
Cortisol is elevated in response to stress. The adrenal glands are not particular, any kind of stress will do. The stress can be physical, environmental, chemical, or imaginary. The human brain is hard wired with automatic responses to protect the body from harm. The classic work on stress was done by Dr. Hans Selye, M.D. He studied the physiological consequences of stress in rats and transferred that research data into a human model.
(1) In the "Fight or Flight" response, the adrenal glands enlarge and secrete large quantities of adrenal cortical hormones. These hormones suppress inflammatory responses and mobilize the body's energy reserves. This puts the body on RED ALERT and diverts all of the body's biochemical resources to immediate survival. The body's self healing mechanisms are arrested (healing diverts energy and raw materials away from immediate survival), the immune system is suppressed, glycogen stores in the liver and muscle tissue are mobilized to raise the blood sugar level, and digestion and assimilation are inhibited. The stomach lining becomes thin and ulcerated and the thymus gland and lymphatic tissue shrinks. This "Fight or Flight" response works well when dealing with man eating food, but it is not suited for our modern lifestyle. Battling traffic, competing for parking spaces and watching the evening news produces the same
physiological responses as running for your life. And the stimuli don't stop and go away, leaving the body with chronic high cortisol levels.
(2) All forms of stress produce the same physiological consequences. This includes environmental stress (heat, cold and noise, etc.), chemical stress (pollution, drugs, etc.), physical stress (overexertion, trauma, infection, etc.), psychological stress (worry, fear, etc.), and biochemical stress (nutritional deficiencies, refined sugar consumption, etc.). All of these different sources of stress are additive and cumulative in their effects.
As the body responds to this cumulative stress, it goes through three stages of response.
(1) The first stage is REACTION. The body experiences the symptoms from the trauma, infection, heat, cold, chemical irritation, etc. The endocrine system responds with the release of cortisol and other hormones to compensate for the trauma. The heart beats faster, the blood pressure rises, andnthe pupils dilate.
(2) The second stage is ADAPTATION. After the adrenal glands have enlarged and released large quantities of adrenal cortical hormones, the symptoms disappear and the individual feels good, has energy, and is able to function in the presence of the stresses he/she is under.
(3) The third stage is EXHAUSTION. After an extended period in stage two, the body's reserves of nutritional elements (raw materials) and resilience becomes depleted. The symptoms return and there is now no relief. The individual may collapse physically, suffer a nervous breakdown, become dysfunctional, and/or experience an organ or body system failure (heart attack, stroke, etc.)
(4) An optional fourth stage is DEATH. If the stresses continue after stage three is reached and the body is no longer able to adapt and rest, and regeneration and healing do not occur, the consequence is death.
It is important to recognize that an individual, in the cycle short of stage four, can reverse the consequences of stress by removing themselves from the stressful situation and giving themselves the rest, peace of mind, and nutritional support that is necessary to restore the body's reserves.
It is also important to recognize that an individual in stage two has physiologically adapted and they feel asymptomatic, and are usually, therefore, not too concerned about or even conscious of what is happening. One of the consequences of this adaptation is suppression of the immune system. These individuals are more susceptible to infections, colds, and allergies, etc. In the presence of new and dangerous infectious diseases, this can be a very important matter.
(Last issue: The Consequences of Chronic High Cortisol and How to Correct your Cortisol Level)
This article is for information purposes only. It is not the intent of this article to diagnose, instruct individuals in self diagnosis or instruct individuals in the treatment of disease. Some Individuals could have a serious medical condition like Addison's or Cushings disease. A physician should be consulted to diagnose or rule out serious medical conditions.
The hormone cortisol is produced in the adrenal cortex in response to adrenal cortical stimulating hormone (ACTH) produced in the pituitary gland. Cortisol plays an important role in regulating blood sugar, energy production, inflammation, the immune system, and healing.
If you have too little cortisol, you may suffer from fatigue, chronic fatigue, exhaustion, and a disease of the endocrine system called Addison's disease. If your adrenal glands are producing too much cortisol, you may develop conditions such as weight gain, especially around the abdomen, depressed immune function with all of the consequences, accelerated aging, and stomach ulcers.
Recently, a lot of attention has been directed to the effects of excess cortisol on weight gain and on the difficulty in losing weight. Collectively, the various diet plans being promoted by a long list of diet gurus have a failure rate of approximately 93 to 97 percent. There are several reasons for this. One is clearly the difficulty in achieving behavioral modification in the face of easy availability of the wrong kind of foods, inherently sedentary lifestyles, and intense media programming. Another reason is that our hormones work against us, in the weight loss perspective. High cortisol levels is one of the culprits.

I am very please to let you know that due to our marketing efforts with local physical therapists, Century Massage & Bodywork is having it's long-awaited growth spurt. In order to accommodate the increase amount of medical clients in our office, we've made room in the reception area.
This is going to be a process that may take several weeks. With my colleague's help, we are making the changes in our spare time and mostly during the weekends (when it's not too nice of a day outside). ;)
Please forgive the "under construction" look that will be taking place in the month of May. Coz not only are we increasing the reception space, we're also going to be changing the atmosphere of the office by painting our walls. This will be done in two weeks from this last weekend. So if you have allergies to paint smells, I suggest that you make your appointments this week or a week or so after May 14th.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. I hope that you enjoy the larger space and warmer ambiance on your next visit.
Things are starting to book up. So if you've been thinking about setting up a massage appointment or more during our Student Clinic, then you better start calling us to reserve your spot(s).

Clinics are on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between the mentioned dates. Available time slots are 10AM, 1PM, 3PM, and 5PM. Out of 9 time slots for the students each week, we currently have 1 opening left on the first week of Student Clinic. The following week has 2 openings left.
Where can you get an hour massage for only $35 for 6 weeks? And you'll be helping them out a great
deal by giving out your awesome feedback.
