This is certainly the season of wet, slippery roads, which usually spells auto accidents for a lot of us. I have been taking in more new patients around this time of the year due to auto-related accidents, and I found out two years ago that I am not immune to them.
Personal Injury Protection, or what we call PIP in our profession, is part of your auto insurance policy. It is designed to take care of you immediately after an accident regardless of whose fault the accident was.
PIP covers medical bills, a portion of your weekly lost wages, and for household care and cleaning. Your insurance company, by law, cannot cancel your policy for using your PIP. If you have not rejected PIP coverage in writing, then you are deemed to have it. Your insurance company, by law, cannot increase your insurance rates for using your PIP. PIP is no-fault, so it doesn't matter who caused the accident, you're still covered. There is no deductible and coverage is for 3 years or $10,000, which ever comes first. Some policies have higher limits. If you have coverage on your auto policy, your medical bills get paid on time and you can maintain your treatment schedule uninterrupted.
Step-By-Step Guide:
Call your insurance agent
Ask if you have PIP or MedPay (a version of PIP minus wage or loss of services coverage). If yes, ask about limits on time and dollar amount (3 years/ $10,000).
Ask your agent to take your Report of Loss claim
Ask your agent to phone in your report to the claims office
Ask your agent to call back with the claim number, address and phone number of the claims office
Call the claims office and get the
name of the claims adjuster handling your claim
Ask the claims adjuster to mail a PIP Application, Attending Physician's Report and Salary Verification forms
Complete the PIP Application and return it to the claims adjuster
Have your employer complete the Salary Verification form and return it to you. Mail to the claims adjuster
Provide your claim number and the adjuster's name, office address and phone number to all your Health Care Providers
Instruct your Health Care Providers to bill your PIP carrier directly
We at Century Massage & Bodywork welcome your PIP (auto) claims as well Labor & Industries and Medical claims. Just give us a call if you have questions. We'll even verify coverage for you.

How to Avoid Whiplash
According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 300,000 whiplash injuries occur annually in the United States. Whiplash, an injury to the soft tissues of the head, neck and spine, can cause pain, stiffness, headaches, sensory disturbances and dizziness. You can experience whiplash if your neck is rapidly jarred beyond its normal range, such as when a vehicle in which you're riding is struck from behind.
To prevent whiplash injury, take the following precautions:
ENSURE that your vehicle "headrests" - they're actually head restraints - are high enough to touch the back of your skull. Tip: Adjust the head restraint before buckling your seat belt.
PRACTICE defensive driving. Be aware of unsafe, erratic and distracted drivers.
AVOID tailgaters. Get out of the path of tailgating drivers as soon as it's safe, or slow down and allow the vehicle to pass.
Finally, if whiplash occurs, use ice packs rather than heat on your neck, and see your doctor for further treatment. -- [Make sure that you ask your doctor to prescribe massage therapy. Massage focuses on the soft tissues and will greatly aid in your whiplash recovery. Your Personal Injury Protection from your auto insurance should be able to cover the cost of your whiplash treatments.]
Update: The NHTSA recently upgraded its head restraint standards to reduce whiplash injuries in rear collisions. The upgraded standard becomes mandatory for all vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2008.
Hey everyone!

Great news!
After talking to Jennifer Christian, a Licensed Acupuncturist, for
some time, she has agreed to have a trial run of one day per week
(most likely Wednesday) to be at the Renton office and be available
for acupunture appointments.
We will have a couple of months of a trial period starting in
December 2005. If things go well, Jennifer may have to increase her
availability to more than one day a week.
Jennifer and I have been trading our services for about 4 months. Of the
acupuncture sessions I have experienced in the past, I highly
recommend Jennifer. During a session, Jennifer also use tuning forks, carefully
placing the ends of the forks on acunpunture points. She is also equiped to do
cupping...
I will send another email to let you all know when Jen will be
taking appointments and what modalities she will be able to do at
CM&B.
I would like to know your input on this, so please feel free to let
me know if you may be interested in using this service in the near
future.
Thanks! - Lyn

There was a comparative study done during a 10-month period between Ausgust 2003
and May 2004. The aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of
Traditional Thai Massage (TTM) among patients with back pain associated with
myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). Swedish Massage (SM) was selected as the
treatment for the comparison group. One hundred-eighty (180) patients were
randomly allocated, aged 21-50 years, to receive either TTM or SM for six (6)
sessions during a 3-4 week period, with follow-up one (1) month later.
Results indicated that pain intensity, assesed using the visual analog scale
(VAS), among patients in both groups was reduced by more than half after three
(3) weeks of treatment and for up to one (1) month afterwards with no
significant difference in VAS between the groups. Similar improvements were
found for the most other outcome measures.
They conclude that TTM and SM are effective in reducing back pain among patients
with MTrPs. They therefore suggest that massage therapy, and in particular Thai
Massage, be considered as an alternative primary health care treatment for this
disorder.

ISN'T REPEATED STRESS ON THE JOINTS HARMFUL?
Perhaps the most persistent myth about arthritis is that people
should avoid physical activity because it will lead to further
degeneration. The opposite is actually true. In a recent study of
millworkers, seamstresses, and local coal miners by Norton Hagler,
M.D., professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina, the
conclusion was: "There is no solid evidence that the repetetive use
of joints causes damage to joints, muscles, or nerves."
CUSHION THE IMPACT, LIGHTEN THE LOAD
Although care should be taken to avoid high-impact activities, good
equipment (such as well-cushioned running shoes and walking shoes)
will aid in shock absorption. Weight loss is another beneficial
measure. The less you weigh, the less stress on the joints when you
move.
WARM UP AND STRETCH
It's especially important to start each exercise session with a good
warmup to ease gently into exercise. Some gentle stretching and
range-of-motion exercises both before and after the workout help
prevent soreness and undue stiffness. Heat application (such as a
hot shower, bath, jacuzzi, or even toical applications such as Tiger
Balm*) before and after exercise can feel great and improve range of
motion.
PROGRESS MAY BE SLOW
Be patient. Slow progress is to be expected, especially if you've
had arthritis for a long time. Expect some setbacks in any exercise
program, but keep at it - the benefits will come. Remember, if
weight training exercise produces pain that lasts longer than a few
hours, cut back on either the repetitions performed or the weight.
If cutting back doesn't help, choose a different activity that works
the same joints and muscles, but does not cause pain. Also, exercise
helps you *maintain* what strength and flexibility you already have,
even if you don't improve that much.
* Tiger Balm is a penetrating, heat-producing salve from China (in
use for over 100 years).

IS OSTEOARTHRITIS REALLY CAUSED BY "WEAR AND TEAR"?
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T MOVE ENOUGH?
WHAT TYPE OF EXERCISE IS BEST?
*******
IS OSTEOARTHRITIS REALLY CAUSED BY "WEAR AND TEAR"?
Many researchers speculate that it's not overuse that contributes to
osteoarthritis, but rather *lack* of use. A sedentary lifestyle
gradually reduces joint range-of-motion. This lack of movement is
not the sole cause of arthritis, but there is increasing evidence
that when joint and muscle groups are not moved, they athropy. This
resulting weakness makes joints even more unstable and everyday
activities even more painful. The right type of exercise wil keep
you flexible and will lubricate the joints and strengthen the
muscles, tendons, and ligaments that help support the joint
structures.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T MOVE ENOUGH?
If you're mostly sedentary and do not exercise, your joints become
stiff and your muscles smaller and weaker. People with a painful
joint often keep it in a bent position because it feels better that
way. But pretty soon, the joint can become locked, and loss of
function and deformity can result.
"Regular exercise helps keep joints flexible, helps build and
preserve muscle strength, and helps protect joints from further
stress." -Arthritis Basic Facts, Arthritis Foundation
WHAT TYPE OF EXERCISE IS BEST?
Exercises emphasizing range of motion, strength, and endurance can
lessen the effects of arthritis and may help prevent the onset of
the disease. These are the three type of activity we recommend in
all programs in the book. Specifically:
* RANGE OF MOTION is best improved by stretching. If you have
arthritis, try to move all affected joints through a full range of
motion daily. To customize a stretching program, consult with your
health professional.
* STRENGTH of joints and muscles can be improved by calesthenics or
by doing *resistance exercises* with rubber bands. Strengthening the
surrounding muscles will support and stabilize the arthritic joint.
If your arthritis is not severe, you may even be able to do some
light weight training, so long as you do not experience pain; but
you need to be very careful here. Ask your doctor first. A doctor
who believes in exercise for arthritis sufferers can help you choose
the exerises best suited to your condition.
* ENDURANCE activities, especially low-intensity *aerobic exercise*,
can be of great benefit. High-impact activities, like running and
aerobic dance, should generally be avoided, especially for those in
advance stages of the disease, but vigorous cardiovascular training
is encouraged when possible. Exercise bikes, rowing, and cross-
country ski machines, as well as swimming and other water exercise
(especially in warm water) all put less stress on your joints, since
your weight is supported. Walking is another good activity, if it
doesn't cause undue pain.
Running doesn't accelerate arthritis Several studies on acive
people, including runners, show their chance of developing arthritis
is the same as in sedentary people. Exercise is good for joints, and
even the pounding from years of running doesn't increase arthritis
risk. A recent study at the Univerity of California Medical chool,
San Francisco, and Stanford University goes even further: Running
doesn't even increase the rate of knee deterioration in runners who
have arthritis.

Hello!
Since my massage team will be leaving for California
in the next week and a half, I thought I'd put
something up on the list about Arthritis.
You see, the group cyclists that we'll be following
for over 500 miles in 8 days are raising money for the
Arthritis Foundation. My sister, Lani, was recently
diagnosed with a form of Rheumatoid Arthritis. I will
be donating a portion of my earnings back to the
Arthritis Foundation.
Anyway, I'll be putting together a series of postings
about arthritis...
WHAT IS ARTHRITIS?
Arthritis is actually a symptom. It means
"inflammation of he joints." To understand arthritis,
it's important to know a little bit about the joints.
Joints allow the body to bend, flex, turn, and move.
They provide flexibility, and they must also be
strong.
Joints make it possible for our bones to move while
still supporting weight. With arthritis, we are not
concerned with the muscles and tendons that enable the
joints to move, nor with the tendons that provide
joint stability. Rather, it is hat goes on *inside*
the joints that is of concern.
The most common form of arthritis is what's called
osteoarthritis, or (perhaps incorrectly) "wear and
tear" arthritis. Of the 37 million Americans with
arthritis, 17 million have this type. Here, the
cartilage that covers and protect the ends of bones
softens and may become pitted and frayed, or even wear
completely away. the joint lose their cushioning, and
pain results when the joints are moved. Another, less
common form of arthritis is called rheumatoid
arthritis, where the joint membranes become inf
lammed. Advance rheumatoid arthritis is easy to
recognize. Fingers and toes slant a odd angles. Joint
are noticeably swollen. Doctors know the symptoms,
but they don't know the cause of this crippling
disease.
The best remedy for arthritis was commonly held to be
rest. Wrong, says that the Arthritis Foundation. Most
doctors today prescribe exercise to combat pain and
stiffening in arthritic joints. And, in the process,
patients get the additional health benefits of
cardiovascular training.

Hello!
I hope everyone is doing well!
With the business expansion going well, I was made
aware of a few things by my loan officer at Seattle's
Community Capital Development. Looking to make sure
that I am able to payoff the loan that I will be
receiving in the next few weeks, he gave me a few
pointers on how to keep accounts receivable down.
Please read below:
Payment Policy
1. Payment is expected to be paid in full at the day
of service at a discounted rate (See “Price List”). We
are happy to accept cash, your check or a credit card
(Visa or MasterCard) for payment of your session.
There is a $35 charge for returned check fees.
2. We accept Personal Injury, Workman's Compensation,

4. You must bring your current health insurance card
with you each time you come to the office. This is
very important. You may not appreciate the subtle
changes your employer has made in your benefit plan
that will be reflected on your insurance card.
Bringing your card with you each visit is important
for you and for us.
5. If your insurance plan requires you to pay a
"copay" for your visit with us, you must make that
payment at the time of your visit. We are happy to
accept cash, your check or a credit card (Visa ,
MasterCard, American Express, or Discover) for payment
of your copay. There is a $35 charge for returned
check fees. Be aware that most plans require a copay
for each member of the family, so if you bring another
member of the family with you, two or more "copay"
amounts will be due.
6. Payment of the amount you owe is due within 30
days of the date of the statement or a monthly
interest of 1% will be applied. If payment of your
portion of the bill for which you are responsible is
not made after the second statement has been sent, our
office will contact you to arrange payment. We
automatically send all overdue accounts promptly to
our collection agency and the credit bureau is
notified.
7. CM&B will limit its acceptance of third party
insurance claims. This is usually an auto accident
with the legal representation in which the case awaits
settlement. CM&B will require a minimum payment of $45
of the day's service(s) until an unpaid balance of
$1,500 is reached. The client will be responsible for
100% of any amount after $1,500 based on current Time
of Service prices (See “Price List”).
8. Any unpaid balances between $400 and $1,000 (other
than 3rd party claims) must be paid in full within six
(4) month.
