I am sure that everyone is aware of the death and
destruction that has happened in South Asia. As of
today, the death toll is over 141,000 people.
I even called my dad in the Philippines last week to
make sure that he was okay. No tsunami in the Visayan
region, but the Philippines were hit by a series of
typhoons. Again, the Visayan region was spared.
For a week, I have been trying to come up with an idea
to help out with the relief efforts in Asia. I knew
that there was no way for me to come up with a lot of
money on my own, but that didn't stop me from coming
up with a better idea.
Last night, I saw a feature on the news about a pizza
business donating a day's worth of profits to the
relief efforts, but with just myself, I still wouldn't
be able to help out. I still need to have a better
idea and text messaged Gordon to find out if he would
help me by donating a day's worth of massage and went
to sleep.
I was awakened by a reply from Gordon that he was
willing to donate a day. I then started calling
another massage therapist, Pam. She said yes. I called
another, Chann, she said she would as well. I went
crazy calling people I know, even non-massage
therapists to see if they have something to make the
idea even better. Talking to Chris was the trick! Then
I called a chiropractor, Brett. He will also help out
in this endeavor.
In short, I am currently putting together a team of
massage therapists and chiropractors, each donating a
day or more of their time to raise money to help with
the tsunami relief effort in South Asia. Only a few
hours has passed, but as of now, I have 4 LMPs and 1
DC on board.
This idea is still in its initial stages but seem to
have taken a life of its own. I am still brainstorming
and working on logistics, and a lot needs to happen to
make this a worthwhile endeavor for the the therapists
giving up their time and energy, others who are
willing to to help with advertising this event, the
clients coming in to receive massages, and anyone who
wants to donate time or money to make this happen.
Currently, we are looking at a one-week worth (so far,
between 1/10/05 and 1/17/05) of labor in which 100% of
the profit going to either Mercy Corp or the Red
Cross. The dates may change, due to the availability
of each therapist and chiropractor. We plan to have
this happen at the Century Massage & Bodywork
location.
I will send out another email in a few days when the
we iron out the details and will be posting more
information at rvuuc.org (Rainier Valley Unitarian
Universalist Congregation's website).
If you wish to help in any way, please contact my
office at (425)228-5217 or my cell (206)949-7211.
Please spread the word. I am hoping to have the media
involved in this.
Peace and happiness to all! - Lyn
