Sales Tax Holiday - August 6-8
>
> ------------------------------------------------------------------------
> By Grace Cheng
> AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
> Saturday, July 31, 2004
>
> The sixth annual sales tax holiday is coming to a store near you next
> weekend.
>
> Clothing, footwear and other items under $100 will be exempt from sales
> taxes, which the state estimates will save consumers about $46 million.
>
> "This is a much-needed and well-deserved tax break for hard-working Texas
> families," Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn said Friday. "It lets
> families keep more of their dollars in their pockets for their families'
> priorities."
>
> Strayhorn said that consumers have saved $193 million to date from
tax-free
> holidays.
>
> Items such as diapers and underwear will be tax-free for three days,
> starting Friday, so retailers are expecting crowds to rival those of the
day
> after Thanksgiving.
>
> "It's a great boost for retailers in the middle of the year," said Chuck
> Courtney, president of the Texas Retailers Association. "It stimulates
other
> sales as well. I think a lot of people take advantage of it."
>
> Retailers are hiring extra employees, beefing up inventory and extending
> their hours to accommodate the slew of shoppers. At Barton Creek Square
> mall, many retailers add other promotions and sales, as well, said
> spokeswoman Carmen Soto.
>
> The Prime and Tanger outlet centers in San Marcos will be opening their
> doors earlier; many of their stores will be open through the entire
holiday.
>
> Although the sales-tax holiday is actually costing the state and cities
> money in lost taxes, the program is extremely popular.
>
> In fact, Courtney said that the holiday helps other businesses.
>
> "(Consumers) take the money they saved at the holiday and use it somewhere
> else," Courtney said.
>
> Strayhorn advocates expanding the tax-free list and the length of the
> holiday to five days.
>
> "There is no reason for a three-day traffic jam," Strayhorn said.
>
> The program has been criticized for some of the items that are included or
> excluded from the list of exemptions. Strayhorn said that the list of
> tax-free items ought to include back-to-school items and safety products
> such as backpacks and children's car seats. She said that consumers will
> save another $25 million per year if these items are included in the
> sales-tax holiday.
>
> Such changes to the tax holiday would have to be approved by the
> Legislature.
>
> Families with school children will spend an average of $483.28 on
> back-to-school items, up 7.2 percent from $450.76 last year, according to
> the National Retail Federation Back-to-School Consumer Intentions and
> Actions Survey. Combined, adults will spend $14.79 billion sending their
> kids back to elementary, middle and high schools this year, the study
shows.
>
> For a list of tax-exempt products, visit the Texas comp- troller's office
> site at www .window.state.tx.us or call (800) 252-5555.
>
> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

We can focus on the whole of life rather than the fragments.
Consider this...
"A human being is a part of the whole called by us the universe, a
part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his
thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind
of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind
of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to
affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free
ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to
embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its
beauty." --Albert Einstein.

3) Take Action to Support the Medical Use of Marijuana

At its annual statewide convention, held at the end of June in
Houston, the Texas Democratic Party officially endorsed protecting
medical marijuana patients from the threat of arrest and
imprisonment.

Now a full plank in the Texas Democratic platform, the resolution is
a
leap forward in the effort to protect Texans who use medical
marijuana
from arrest and prosecution. It's time for Texas to stop treating its
medical marijuana patients like common criminals.

Please visit http://www.mpp.org/TX/action.html to take action. After
you choose your favorite pre-written letter and type in your address,
our site will automatically e-mail your letter to your
legislators ...
all with the click of a few buttons. The whole process takes less
than
two minutes, but it makes a world of difference. Also, you can print
the letters and send them to your legislators through regular mail.

And if you want to volunteer to work with TMM, or to receive its
e-mail alerts, be sure to contact Noelle Davis at
noelle@... or by calling 512-220-9209.

Visit http://www.mpp.org/TX/news.html to read more about the Texas
Democrats' position or the TMA's resolution.

Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please pass
this information on so that even more voices for reform can be heard.

The Marijuana Policy Project hopes that each of the 120,000
subscribers on this e-mail list will make at least one financial
donation to MPP's work in 2004. Please visit
http://www.mpp.org/MoneyForStates to donate now.

**We can choose to be peaceful inside, regardless of what is
happening outside.

"Inner peace brings with it singleness of purpose, clarity of mind,
and strength of character. When you operate from the center of your
own peace, others are drawn to you merely for the comfort of being
in your presence. We are all attracted to those who express this
steadfastness because their mere presence seems to reorder our own
priorities and bless us with peace. You can become this presence." -
-Susan Trout, To See Differently

**We are students and teachers to each other.

"The simplest level of teaching consists of what seem to be very
casual encounters: a 'chance' meeting of two apparent strangers in
an elevator, a child who is not looking running into an adult, two
students 'happening' to walk home together. These are not chance
encounters. Perhaps the seeming strangers in the elevator will
smile at one another; perhaps the adult will not scold the child for
bumping into him; perhaps the students will become friends. Even in
the most casual encounter, it is possible for two people to lose
sight of separate interests, if only for a moment. That moment will
be enough." From A Course in Miracles...

Cornelia Aihara's Vega Barley Miso
For over 50 years, Cornelia, one of George Ohsawa's students, has
been widely known for her dark barley miso. Previously this miso was
available only by studying with Cornelia at the Vega Study Center.
This year she decided to retire and has sold her center. However,
she has agreed to let the Natural Epicurean distribute the last 5
barrels of her world renowned miso. Cornelia Aihara's miso is known
worldwide for its healing properties and rich taste. What gives her
miso such exquisite flavor and potency is that each batch has been
lovingly and carefully prepared with only the highest quality
ingredients by Cornelia herself and the students who studied with
her. It has been slowly aged for 5 years in fine wooden kegs
seasoned through years and years of miso making in the optimal
cultivating environment, a cellar in the Sierra Nevada Foothills.

Subject: Health for Healers is now Natural Healers' Business Alliance

A wonderful alliance is forming from a meeting of healers that first happened on July 7th.  The people who attended the first two meetings have become the founding members of the Natural Healers Business Alliance.

Our third meeting will be held on Monday, August 2nd.  All natural healers are invited to attend.  We’ll be meeting at Jean McClelland’s home again in the Arboretum area, 5100 Bluffside Drive, Austin, TX  78759. We’ll start at 6:30 pm.

In our second meeting the group came to a few agreements.  We feel we are on the right track and also realize that the ideas are still incubating.  We will continue to work on these agreements in the business section of the meeting until they completely gel.

The first agreement is that the mission statement will include the concepts of knowledge sharing, networking (promoting each other's work through referrals as well as networking with each other) and long-term prosperity through doing what we really enjoy and being paid for it.  The definitions of some of the words are still nebulous so we are still working on it in the business portion of the meeting.  One of the words under scrutiny was "healer" and specifically "natural" healer.  Come to the next meeting and add your thoughts on the definition of these terms!

More thoughts in the formulating meetings have been:

  • Anchoring positive energy to serve and fulfill our personal destinies
  • Healing globally by design through networking, education...
  • ...setting the environment for the future of healing  (or, just the future)

Our intention is to keep this group as an effective resource for all of us in natural healing professions.  We want to support each other with our knowledge of how to conduct our businesses so that they so that they support us well without our having to "sell out" and help others solely for the money.  For healers beginning their practices, we want to be the resource that puts them on the fast track.

The general meeting agenda has been agreed to be:

  • Centering Breath / Exercise to let go of the day and begin our group support
  • A one minute introduction for the newcomers to explain what the Natural Healers Business Alliance is
  • 30 second personal introductions of each attendee - your 30 second commercial or "elevator speech", ending with the definition of your perfect client (in case someone might have a referral for you right then!)
  • Knowledge Sharing - One speaker per meeting will provide a 20 minute presentation on what their business is, what modalities they practice, etc.
  • New Concepts - 10 minutes to discuss new modalities found, new insight to current practices and/or new resources to note
  • Business Education - a member or guest speaker will provide a 20 minute presentation/discussion on an aspect of the business end of a healer's practice
  • Closing Ceremony / Meditation - to connect the energy built to those who choose to stay connected and take the network out to the masses
  • Healers are then invited to leave (the days do get long)  or to stay and work on each other

Our first  two presenters in the healing part of the Alliance were Arthur Peterson, D.C (chiropractor, Master's Miracle distributor and energy worker) and Sharra McDearmont (psychic, master Tarot teacher and energy worker).

Until the group formulation is better gelled, Jean  McClelland has lead the business part of the Alliance .

Upcoming meeting dates are:

Monday, August 2    6:30 pm  till approximately 8:30pm  - Wenea Elia will begin the centering, Deeanna Chestnut will have the spotlight on her healing practice and Shara McDearmont will generally lead the group (Jean McClelland is on vacation but the meeting will still be at her house due to it's central location)

Monday, August 16  6:30 pm   Kerry Curtis will be featured.

Currently these meetings are free.  If you choose to donate a dollar (or more) to the cost of the snacks, that's fine but not expected.

If you plan to attend, please reply to either email address below.  The room is small so it’s important to know how many people are coming.

Hi Joy & Ellen & All,

I am new to this group, thanks to Stacey. To give you my perspective, and
I've also been experiencing many shifts happening as well. It's been said,
"people want changes, and they don't want to change". I can relate, just
beam me thru to the other side of all this. Well, why I am responding...

From my observation of astrology cycles, it's not just the retrograde time,
Mercury is going RETROGRADE from 8/10 @ 8 Virgo and will go DIRECT 9/3 at 25
Leo.

The rest of the story, as Paul Harvey says is, I notice from the time a
planet reaches the degree at which it turns DIRECT, i.e. in this case 25 Leo
on 7/21 until the planet reaches the degree at which it first turns
RETROGRADE, i.e. in this case 8 Virgo on 9/16 which I name complete cycle,
stuff that comes up is related to the 3 weeks of the time we traditionally
call retrograde. If you notice events, people, themes in your life will all
fit together, at least in retrospect after 9/16 if you include the time back
to 7/21.

So if you would notice what was going on in your life on July 21st you may
notice it reaches some conclusion on 9/16 in the case of this coming Mercury
retro. And between those dates each will go thru "re" evaluations,
communications, solving, thinking, viewing, all the "re" words.

In no way is just 1 planet the whole soup, just 1 spice or element stirring
clock-wise, then counter-clock-wise, and back again.

I preceive the changes are much bigger than Mercury, and it's certainly
playing a part in our reconsidering our lives. Remember Venus eclipse asked
us how we love, our Selves, others, and are we able to receive, allow, all
the Venus words, and that is still going on. As well the patriachy shift so
male female energies are shifting, the better we ride the crest of the wave
and surf it's fun, the balance of getting swallowed by the wave is the
learning as well.

There are other big cycles spinning as well, but I'm responding specifically
to your Mercury inquiry, and yes, by my observation we are in the Mercury
retrograde cycle, some call the shadow, I say it's the beginning clues of
what this one's about.

Hope this shines some light on your inquiry.

Knowing in what area each person will experience this retrograde can be
enlightening. If you don't know and would like to know where 25 Leo - 8
Virgo is in your chart I would be glad to send that info to you, at no
charge, and you could be aware and watch how this fits your experience. I
would need your birth date, time from your birth certificate if you want
correct info, and location of your birth. Full charts are also available
starting at $75.

I hope someone can explain this, too, since I am seeing the same thing as
Joy here in Florida. I have had people asking if Mercury is retrograde-it's
not. The drama and trauma is clear and present, though, so it seems likely
that there is something large going on. Thanks for asking, Joy!

Hi!

Not that I know that much about this, but how many of y'all are
Cancers? I am, & my fellow Cancer buddy was explaining to me how
we've had Venus move out of Cancer & that things will downshift for
us, but that Venus should return around the end of summer.

Just a thought,
Christa Daszko, R.M.T.

A couple of folks asked about what's going on astrologically. I recently
spoke to an astrologer friend and she confirmed that Saturn will remain in
Cancer through next summer. Saturn is often referred to as the wise teacher.
As a sign, Cancer is about home, security, family, relationships, etc. So
... a lot of people are having stuff come up around those Cancerian themes.
Cancer is also a water sign, which means emotions are part of the scheme of
things. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if there is some weird astrological thing going down right
now? Everyone I talk to is having some huge trauma.
I hear there is a big old astroid swooping by on the 29th of this month, I
don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, any clues?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"The Heart is wise and accurate and can show you how true it is to stay or go, how true it is to buy a house, how true it is to take  a new job, even how true it is to eat another cookie. But it also  can show you much more of the possibilities inherent in this life and much more of the truth of your ultimate Being. In relation to these bigger truths, the practical questions of your life turn out to be relatively small matters. Using your Heart only to know things
like what to do or where to live is like using a global positioning satellite system to find the way from your bedroom to your bathroom; it utilizes only a small part of your Heart's capacity.

However, following your Heart day in and day out can put you in touch with the richness of the functioning of this dimension of your Being. Along the way, you may also find your Heart opening in response to the deeper movements of Being that touch every life.

"In the midst of a very profound and large experience of truth, the sense of your self can become so large and inclusive that it no longer has much of a sense of being your Being. When you awaken to the oneness of all things, the sense of a me can thin out quite dramatically. If you are the couch you are sitting on and the clouds in the sky and everything else, then it simply doesn't make sense to
call it all me. If it's so much more than what you usually take
yourself to be, then the term me is just too small.

In a profound experience of truth, the sense of me softens and expands to such a degree that there's only a slight sense of me as a separate self remaining, perhaps just as the observer of the  vastness of truth. Beyond these profound experiences of the truth,  is the truth itself. When you're in touch with the ultimate truth and the most complete sense of Being, there's nothing separate  remaining to sense itself—there's no experience and no experiencer, no Heart, and no sense of self. There is only Being."

1) Protest Fox News Network's Unfair Reporting with one click!

On Sunday night, over 25,000 people gathered in living rooms across
the nation to see Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism. It
was an inspiring turnout. And we saw just how Fox News delivers the
Republicans' talking points under the guise of a news broadcast.
Raising the stakes, Common Cause and MoveOn filed a complaint this
morning with the Federal Trade Commission challenging Fox News'
deceptive advertising slogan "fair and balanced."
We need your help. Sign our Fox petition and join in our complaint
to the FTC and Congress at:
http://www.moveon.org/fox/
We need to add hundreds of thousands of signatures and comments by
Wednesday, so that the FTC and Congress know they've got to deal
with this issue. The challenges to Fox's partisanship are mounting.
Not surprisingly, Fox hasn't offered any real defense. Instead, they
have responded by attacking former employees who are speaking out.
It's crucial that we demonstrate public support for these courageous
journalists and voice our disgust with Fox's deceptive advertising.
And we really need to spread the word about this campaign. On the
petition page, there's a really horrifying but funny video clip from
the film highlighting Bill O'Reilly's hypocrisy. After signing and
giving your comment, you can send the petition and this clip to
friends to keep the ball rolling.
Join us in taking on Fox at:
http://www.moveon.org/fox/
This is just the beginning of our Fox campaign. In this election
year, nothing could be more important than demanding fair coverage
in the press. We're putting all the media on notice that we will
accept no less.

The American Red Cross (news - web sites) is issuing an urgent call
for blood donations, saying parts of the country have less than a
day's supply and some hospitals are postponing elective surgeries to
conserve.

Yahoo! Health
Have questions about your health?
Find answers here.

People with Type O-negative blood, the universal blood type, are
particularly needed, but the Red Cross urged anyone who's eligible to
donate: people in good health age 17 or older, who weight at least
110 pounds.

Summertime blood shortfalls are common, as regular donors go on
vacation. The Red Cross calls this year's shortage particularly bad,
reporting less than 46,000 units of blood on shelves Thursday.
Anything below 60,000 units is considered a critical shortage; an
optimal inventory is 100,000.

Two-thirds of Red Cross regions report having less than a day's
supply of O-negative blood, said spokeswoman Stephanie Millian.

The Northeast seems particularly hard-hit, and the Red Cross had
advised hospitals in some states to postpone non-emergency Type O
transfusions as a result, she said.

The Red Cross supplies about half the nation's blood.

America's Blood Centers, which supplies the other half, says 20
percent of its reporting centers have a day's supply of blood or
less. It hasn't yet issued a nationwide donor appeal, saying its
supplies are creeping up slowly since the July 4th holiday.

To donate: Contact the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or
http://www.givelife.org, or America's Blood Centers at 1-888-USBLOOD

Austin Music Network Showcase Asks for Entries!
--thanks to Kelly Schwarting for sending dis in!

AMN will be having a benefit party organized by Burn the Box on the
25th of
this month. The event will have some live music, performances by B-
Boy City, and
installations by video artists.

The video art installation portion will consist of projected images
and of
isolated television sets. This will not be an ideal environment to
showcase
audio oriented video work, rather, visually oriented art will be more
practical.

If you or anyone you know that is somehow associated with the Austin
Music
Network has any work that could be utilized as video art, we want to
showcase it at this show. This could be a short movie, a music
video, still
images---really, anything that could successfully be loaded onto a
DVD and
looped with other bodies of work in a similar vein. Must include a
description of the work or inspiration for it (think museum or
gallery
placards)

If audio is absolutely necessary to your piece, we could still use
it--it
would have to put in a designated area where the sound of other tvs
or
general party noise won't interrupt it.

Are there some TX videos that you think are rad and should be
complied on a
real to show as art?

Do you know one of the TX video directors who may want to submit
pieces?

Have you made a short movie or selected excerpts from a longer piece
you'd
like to show?
Please submit it a.s.a.p.! Must be in by Monday July 19th for
consideration!!!!!!!

The event is only a week and a half away and the process of
capturing this
stuff and laying it to DVD takes time and so the sooner the better.

Also,
if you have a television and/or a DVD player that you'd like to let
us use
for this event, that would be very helpful. If you or anyone you
know has
access to a projector, that would be even more helpful.

Also, start thinking about whether or not you'll be available to
volunteer
to work this event. There'll will be music, food, alcohol, art,
peeps and
what not so it should be very fun.

Please contact me or Julie (julie@... 974-1810 /
917-575-0890 cell)
with any questions or comments.

Thanks everybody :o) Have a wonderful day.

UNIVERSAL PHILOSOPHY GROUP

I take an educational approach (I have studied with
profound spiritual souls, but I usually emphasize only
the core principles and not personalities.) My
philosophical orientation is Self Realization through
multiple pathways (Zen, Vedanta, Native American,
Modern Science, Transpersonal Psychology, Etc.) I also
strongly believe in establishing an ethical foundation
as all true spiritual traditions do. I have developed
something I call "Organic Non-Dualism" and I emphasize
'each person being ultimately their own best teacher'.
I do not look on myself as a spiritual teacher,
rather a facilitator for educational transformation. I
have dedicated the last 30 plus years to this pursuit
and have of course developed my own approach. Thanks,
Michael

Many people have all kinds of ideas about what
spiritual realization is or isn't and some have a
small glimpse and want to become spiritual teachers;
it is my experience that true spiritual development
takes years of sacrifice and commitment and the
deepest form of 'inner unitary' experience. We come
from an intellectual culture and believe we can
'understand' spiritual realization; whereas it
transcends body/mind and must be directly experienced.
And even after realization it does not make you a
'special person'; rather it takes you back to your
inner core and makes you truly humble. You ultimately
transcend teacher and disciple dualism; you experience
all of life as one unitary whole. These are some of
my thoughts; for what they are worth. Thanks

I have also been a university teacher at 2 major
universities and have extensive education -- I am
doing this as a public service and I ask nothing for
it, money, etc.

Once again, please exuse the repetition if you get this from more than one list....

Dear Friends,

I heard about the results of HB 81, the bill that included massage therapy as a sexually oriented business, only hours after I sent out the original e-mail.  Since I had already sent my letter to Rep. Chisum (the author) and copied Rep. Gattis (my district), I wanted to wait until I had a response from them before I wrote back to you.  Below my signature are the typewritten responses. As with the original letter I sent to Rep Chisum, the original letters I received back from them will be posted (in .pdf format) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/centraltexasmassage/  for members of that group.  Massage therapists can join the group from that same URL.  If you want the .pdf files e-mailed directly to you, please send the request to staceylemire@...

Thanks to all those who felt inspired to take personal responsibility and do something positive.  I heard from many people - most with positive things to say.  Some prayed for wisdom; others wrote to their representatives on their own; a few found opportunity to rant about the government and the law in general ;0)   I heard from others who didn't understand what the "big deal" was!  I heard from those who thought that sending the letter and informing others was premature; another thought the action would have better been taken by professional organizations. Sometimes no action is best.  Other times action feels necessary.  Despite the current political climate, I feel I live in a safe place when individuals can take whatever action feels right.  It's good to remember our freedoms.

I feel confident that we raised awareness to the law and effectively let the public and our representatives know we are serious health care professionals, concerned about any other image given to us.  It seems to me that raising consciousness is always a good thing.

Let's continue to do our part, in whatever way we can, to educate the public and raise awareness as to the health benefits of massage therapy.  The morethe public understands us and what we do, the more demand there will be for our skills and the easier it will be to make a decent living at what we love to do.  And, remember, that if you are a member of a professional organization you can stay in touch with them if you haven't heard from them in a while.  They are out there working for the highest good of the membership and the massage therapy community in general.  Make sure you are in alignment with the organization you support with your hard earned dues money and then see how you can help affect the changes we would all benefit from.  It takes more than dues money and the drive of a few dedicated people to run any volunteer organization.  I'm going to personally increase my involvement by going to the websites and staying informed.  Most of the organizations have e-zines locally or nationally for members and non-members.  (I used to send the AMTA national one through the group, but they haven't come to me in a long time.)

I was inspired to hit the AMTA Texas Chapter website today and found this interesting article about cleaning up our reputation.  It's titled, "Suggestions for Cleaning Up Your Cities of Massage Parlors and False Ads!"  you can read it yourself at:  http://www.amtatexaschapter.org/clean_up_parlors.htm

In service,

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lemire:

Thank you for your letter expressing your concerns about HB 81 [78(4)].  I filed that bill on behalf of Comptroller Carole Strayhorn and it died at the end of the Fourth Called Special Session.

At this time I do not know if the Comptroller intends to pursue this again. However, we have been in touch with her office and have made them aware of your concerns.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Thomas Glenn in the Comptroller’s office at 512/463-3046.

Sincerely,

Warren Chisum

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lemire,

Thank you for your letter to Representative Warren Chisum. I would like you to know

that House Bill 81 was filed in the last special session, but was not heard on the House

floor. Therefore, the measure is dead and the restrictions will not be applied to the

practice of massage therapy.

As to your concern regarding the image of massage therapy, I am all for "weeding out"

those who are not legitimately in the massage profession. Thank you for doing your part

to improve the reputation of this art. If I can be of further assistance to you, please do not

hesitate to contact my office.

Dan Gattis

1) UPCOMING AUSTIN PROGRESSIVE POTLUCKERS EVENT

Austin Freecycle Network (AFN)
Saturday, July 17
6:00-9:00 p.m.

13272 Darwin Lane, Austin

The Austin Freecycle Network is an innovative Internet-based group
with the
goal of reducing waste by connecting people who have unwanted items
with
others seeking those same items. Learn more about them below, but
first,
IMPORTANT DETAILS from the host of the potluck - please read:

Please RSVP to pogoer@... if you are attending this
potluck as
space is limited. BE SURE to do this, and if you later decide you
can't make
it, PLEASE LET US KNOW!!!

Please come early; bring a dish that serves eight hungry people and
your own
plates, utensils and cups. Feel free to bring along a friend and
encourage
them to bring something to share. (Children are welcome!) There will
be a
brief, informative presentation about freecycling at around 7 p.m.

A "freecycle swap" will be part of the evening; in the tradition of
grab-bags and potlucks, you are requested to bring an item to
freecycle
(this is encouraged, but optional) -- it should be something you're
willing
to part with, but in usable condition and not "junk." All items will
be
placed in one area; you will be asked to pick a number from a bowl
and will
select an item of your choice as your number is called. (Post-swap
trading
among yourselves is certainly allowed!)

Location: 13272 Darwin Lane, a private house in a suburban
development in
northwest Austin. To get there from downtown, take the Parmer Lane
exit from
Mopac and turn left onto Parmer; continue straight on Parmer, 3+
miles
through the intersection at McNeil and through several other closely
spaced
lights. Turn left at the light onto Anderson Mill Road. Make the
third left
onto Amasia Drive, a quick right onto Humphrey Drive and the first
left onto
Darwin Lane; it's the second house on the right, a single-story
house with
four cypresses in front. Parking is available on surrounding
streets, or in
a small parkside lot across the road (youth soccer games permitting).
Carpooling (when possible) is encouraged. There is seating for
approximately
20 people; you might want to bring a picnic-style blanket in case of
a large
turnout.

From 183, take the Anderson Mill Road exit. Make a right at Anderson
Mill
(toward Parmer Lane) and continue straight for about 2 miles,
through the
light at Broadmeade. You'll pass Live Oak Elementary on the right
and the
Austin Auction house on the left. Then make a right turn onto
Amasia, a
quick right onto Humphrey Drive and the first left onto Darwin Lane.
If you
get lost, call 249-6544.

The Austin Freecycle Network is an innovative Internet-based group
with the
goal of reducing waste by connecting people who have unwanted items
with
others seeking those same items. Thousands of things, from cars and
catamarans to bridal accessories and baby clothes, have
been 'freecycled' to
date, saving them from landfills while cultivating community
relationships.
With over 3000 members, the AFN is one of the largest groups in the
fast-growing international Freecycle movement, which in little over
a year
has spread to 18 countries and close to 200,000 members, and
received wide
media coverage -- clearly, an idea whose time has come. The AFN is
delighted
to invite the Austin Progressive Potluckers to attend their July
gathering,
to learn more about freecycling, meet like-minded souls, and have
some
tiki-party-style fun in a suburban backyard on a lazy summer
evening.

"Ralph Waldo Emerson - "That which we are, we are all the while
teaching, not voluntarily, but involuntarily."

Boy, ain't that the truth. We can think we're expressing one thing,
but we pick up on what each other are really thinking, doing or
saying at a much more subconscious level.

Pretending can only last so long. In the end, our true self will be
revealed anyway, so we might as well start out there. It's simpler,
and then we don't have to remember who to be around certain people.

Actually people are attracted to us for what we truly are, not what
we're pretending to be. Besides pretending takes a lot of time,
energy and attention that we could be using to more completely
express who we really are and what we have to offer the world.

The world needs me to be me, not someone else. The more authentic I
am, the better I can inspire those around me to be true to
themselves. We are not here to copy, machines can do that. We are
here to express all we are and all we have. "

Life is Truly Wonderful. Share this with those you care about.

to anyone who tells us they'd like to register to vote, and follow
up to make sure they do. This has been shown to be a very effective
way to register voters - and there's never been a more important
time to boost registration than in the lead-up to this November's
election!

2) Tonite!! Satsang with Nirmala in Austin, July 11-12

Nirmala invites you to join him in honoring the limitless love that
is our true nature. Everything is contained within the vastness that
you are, thus satsang (association with truth) is constant and
endless. Together we will enjoy the sweet richness that is revealed
when we give truth our undivided attention.
What is a Satsang? Satsang means "gathering for the truth" and is
an opportunity through meditation, dialogue, and discussion to
discover the simple truth that the peace and happiness we have all
been seeking is always present here and now. Satsang is a chance to
finally rest from all seeking and struggle, and instead to
experience directly the completeness and perfection of our being.
Everything is already contained in the vastness that you are.
Nirmala invites you to join him in honoring this limitless love that
is our true nature. Together, we will enjoy the sweet richness that
is revealed when we give this truth our undivided attention.
Who is Nirmala? Nirmala offers satsang in gratitude for the love and
grace that flow through his teacher, Neelam, and for the blessings
of truth brought to this world by Ramana Maharshi and H.W.L. Poonja.
Satsang is offered as a celebration of the possibility in every
moment of recognizing the truth of who we are. Satsang is free.
Donations are welcome.
