Hi:
I haven't gained any weight but I think maye I have lost a little.
I don't and havent for prolly 6 years owned a scale. I just got to
mad everytime I got on the thing, So I tossed it out! I don't know
if it is the meds or just the fact I'm not as hungry as I was before.
I also don't seem to crave the stuff I used to. As a major chocoholic
I have kind of lost the taste for!

Tamara:
It's the short term memory loss thing.. We forget to answere!! I
have decided that all my problems stem from the fact that I am
a "dyslexic, narcoleptic, metopausal woman!" Sorry!
I haven't heard of Concerta, I take Provigil 500mg a day. What is
Concerta? Like Provigil? What kind of side affects if any are there?
I have been having agression issues but that could be the "change".
I've been reading about other meds for this crazinest and may ask the
doc for something different!

Hey Sarah,
You're funny. I have been reading some of the old posts concering
short term memory loss. Do you think this is a side effect of
Provigil, or of N? Fourtunately, knock on wood, I haven't had short
term memory loss. Good luck with that.
I too, was on Provigil (600mg) in the beginning. I couldn't take it
anymore, it ALWAYS made me sick. Concerta is a methylphenidate based
drug, usually used to treat symptoms of ADHD, but has been effective
in treating N symptoms too. Ritilian which is also a methylphenidate
based drug, can be used as well. For more information on Concerta
http://www.concerta.net/active/mccus/en_US/html/concerta/important_pro
duct_information.pdf
I do a lot of Narcolepsy research. Since my diagnosis, it has become
my passion. I need and want to know as much as possible. The more I
read about it, the more I think to myself 'this is one weird
condition'. Since you have it as well, I'm sure you know what I'm
talking about. When was your diagnosis (how long ago)? My diagnosis
was October 2003. They believe that I have had N since the age of 15
or so.
Do you have a job? (The only reason I ask this..I have been reading
that a lot of Narcoleptics that have had the condition for a long
time, cannot work in a "normal job setting".) I think that you can
have any job you want, IF the people there have "human
understanding". One of my biggest problems is sleep paralysis. I am
late to work often. My husband now drags me out of bed, yeah
literally, every morning.
So with all that said, I'll stop here...

Subject: fibromyalgia and narc

Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed with narcolepsy three
years ago,
and I guess this came as a surprise. I thought that I had arthritis, that my
narcolepsy was
responsible for the tiredness, muscle aches, drained feeling, dry mouth, and my
short
term memory loss...

You know how when you get a diagnosis, you start to think about the past, and
how
suddenly everything makes sense? Like it was obvious from the beginning that
something
was wrong with you and now that there is a term for it, you understand you
weren't crazy?
Well, I've been doing that a lot lately. I do it all the time with the narc,
and I guess I can
say that my narc symptoms started two years before my diagnosis. But the
fibromyalgia
hits so many things, it seems like I've had it forever. I guess in some way I'm
relieved.
Now I know how to change my lifestyle, again for the umpteenth time. BUT I'm
confused
and pissed off. I mean, what do I have? Really?

I've been reading a ton of information, medical journals, personal stories, etc.
And so far I
haven't found one that says that narcolepsy is one of the common sleep disorders
associated with fibromyalgia. DOES ANY ONE ELSE HAVE THIS? I feel like I'm
going insane.
Like every time I find some way to process my disorder, I find out something
else that
makes me question it.

Sorry for the long email, but I knew all of you would understand. I have a
pretty strong
group of friends and family to support me with the narc, but they are having
trouble
understanding the fibromyalgia. It'd be nice to actually have a disorder that
isn't complex,
but I know I shouldn't complain.

Anyway, please email me k1torres@... if you can add any thing.

thanks!
Kristina

hello, all.... i switched to the mirage swift nasal pillows mask
for cpap... after unsuccessfully trying several masks, i was able
to use the nasalaire system for about two years.... unfortunetly,
they've improved it and the last one i received, about seven months
ago, doesn't fit right.... so i switched to the mirage in
novemeber... the problem i'm having is sore spots on the inside of
one nostril and on the bottom of my nose.... i'm at 10cm pressure,
and if i loosten any straps, it leaks.... so i'm wondering if
anyone has had this problem with this, or any other nasal pillows,
and if there is a solution, or if i just have to wait another six
months and guess at another mask....

any help would be appreciated,
shane

Shane,

I always had those issues with the nasal pillows. I
use the nose mask, Mirage ultra I beleive is the name.
Has a forhead adjustment and I do not get any sore
spots.

Probably not much help, but best of luck.

INSOMNIA: Cognitive Restructuring Techniques For Managing Negative,
Stressful Thoughts About Sleep
The hallmark of insomnia is an anxious preoccupation with insomnia
and its effects on daytime functioning. Negative, stressful thoughts
about sleep exacerbate insomnia by triggering negative emotions such
as anxiety or frustration that mobilize the stress response. In turn,
the stress response strengthens the wakefulness system, weakens the
sleep system, and makes it harder to sleep. Here are some examples of
negative sleep thoughts, or NSTs, that are very common: (1)
I'm must get eight hours of sleep. (2) I won't be able to function
tomorrow. (3) My insomnia is going to cause health problems. (4) I
didn't sleep at all last night. (5) I can't fall asleep without a
sleeping pill.
NST's are usually distorted and inaccurate. Furthermore, they do not
serve any adaptive purpose and only serve to exacerbate your
insomnia. In order to overcome insomnia, you must learn to recognize
and change your NSTs with cognitive restructuring (CR). The aim of CR
is simple yet powerful: by recognizing and reframing your NSTs with
more accurate, positive thoughts about sleep you will minimize
anxiety and other negative emotions that trigger the stress response
and disturb your sleep. As a result, you will fear insomnia less and
sleep better. Keep in mind that CR is not the same as denying
insomnia or simply using the power of positive thinking. Rather, CR
involves thinking about insomnia less negatively and more accurately.

A CPAP user traveling by air from Duluth, MN to Portland, ME
contacted the ASAA to advise us that yesterday (07/14/05) the TAS in
Duluth did not allow him to carry on his CPAP machine to the aircraft.

He was advised that a new TAS regulation is in effect that states
that if a carry-on item has any opaque parts in it when goes through
the x-ray that it cannot be carried on.

Needless to say he checked the item and it was damaged in transit.

We contacted the TAS screening persons with disabilities program
today to find when the change in standard operating procedures (SOP)
had changed. We were told that a changed had occurred in April of
2005. We were also told the TAS is currently reviewing this change
in SOP particularly as it relates to CPAP devices, due to the number
of a complaints they had received.

We expect to hear from the TAS next week and we will post what we
learn.

If you have any problems traveling by air with your CPAP device,
please let me know by writing to egrandi@...

Hello all,

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea a little over a month ago and I am on
a CPAP machine 12 cm. I went to see my doctor this week for my
consultation and I mentioned to him that I don't have as much energy as
Ithought I would with the machine. I am overweight also so that could
have something to do with it.

He mentioned to me that there is a drug called Provigil that he could
put me on that would give me more energy and may help with weight
loss. I do not have narcolepsy, only apnea.

My question is what are the side effects of the drug and is it worth it
for me with only Apnea to be on the drug.

I am really glad I found this support group. I have been very depressed
over having this condition.

Thanks

The American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) is joining the Lance
Armstrong and Susan G. Komen Foundations and has introduced a
wristband to raise money for sleep apnea research.

The American Thoracic Society (ATS) will match dollar for dollar if
the ASAA can raise $50,000 for a two-year sleep apnea research
project.

In addition to the match, the ATS will solicit proposals, evaluate
them and administer the grant.

The wristbands are teal and periwinkle tie-dye and have SLEEP –
A.W.A.K.E. debossed on them.

Please visit the ASAA web site (www.sleepapnea.org) for details on
how to order.

DOT Proposes Rule to Require Airlines to Provide In-Flight Medical
Oxygen Without Charge

Many U.S. air carriers and foreign air carriers operating to and from
the United States would be required to provide medical oxygen without
charge to passengers who need it during flight, under a new rule
proposed today by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This
proposed requirement would apply to all passenger carriers operating
at least one aircraft with more than 60 seats.

The Department is proposing this requirement because passengers
needing supplemental oxygen on flights have long experienced
significant difficulties in obtaining the services they need in order
to fly. Currently, airlines are not required to provide medical
oxygen to passengers, and many choose to not offer it. Those that do
may require passengers to pay for the service, sometimes at a
prohibitively high cost.

"Passengers who use oxygen deserve the same access to our air
transportation system as do travelers with other disabilities or
medical conditions," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y.
Mineta. "This rulemaking continues our effort to ensure that
Americans with disabilities are treated fairly when they travel by
air."

Airlines also are not required to allow passengers to use their own
portable oxygen concentrators onboard aircraft, although a recent
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rule permitted carriers to
allow passengers to use Airsep Lifestyle and Inogen One portable
oxygen concentrator devices aboard an aircraft if certain safety
conditions are met.

The proposal, if made final, also would require all U.S. air carriers
and foreign air carriers operating to and from the United States,
except for on-demand air taxis, to test four types of respiratory
assistive devices to ensure that they will not cause interference
with aircraft navigation or communication systems. These four types
of respiratory devices are ventilators, respirators, continuous
positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines and certain portable oxygen
concentrators. Passengers who use respiratory assistive devices have
had difficulty traveling on certain flights because carriers were
concerned about possible electromagnetic interference with aircraft
navigation and communication systems. Under the proposed rule,
passengers would be allowed to use these devices on aircraft if they
can be safely operated on board.

The proposed rule would require the airlines to comply with all
applicable safety and security regulations when providing medical
oxygen service, testing respiratory devices and permitting their use
aboard aircraft.

Comments on the proposed rule, which was published in today's Federal
Register, are due in 60 days. The proposed rule and comments on the
proposal may be obtained via the Internet at http://dms.dot.gov
docket number OST-2005-22298.

I tried to access sleepapnea.org and it took me to another medical web site.
I searched that site for sleep apnea wristbands and got links to several
wristband sites but can¹t tell which one to go to. Thoughts?

Thank you.
