Subject: Support Group Meeting on July 15
ellenhaider
Send Email Send Email

Please join us Sunday, July 15 from 2-4pm @ The Elizabeth Blackwell
Center

We will share our favorite sources of information for coping with our
sleep-related problems at our meeting on July 15.
Laura Evert (She's back!) will start the ball rolling by telling us
about Julie Flygare, a 28 yr old woman with narcolepsy and cataplexy who
helped to start wakeupnarcolepsy.org <http://wakeupnarcolepsy.org/> .
We'll also check to see if everyone understands how to use our yahoo
group and discuss some of the groups available on facebook.

What sources have you found helpful? (I'm old fashioned, so my
favorite source is a book!) Bring something to share or just come
prepared to learn.

Light refreshments will be provided.

The Elizabeth Blackwell Center will no longer be available to us for
meetings after our meeting in July. They are closing the facility. Any
suggestions as to other possible meeting sites for the group?

(The Elizabeth Blackwell Center is north of Riverside Hospital. The
address is 3635 Olentangy River Road.)

Hope to see you there!

Mark your calendars now!

Come out and play with us at our picnic/potluck August 19

5:00-700 at Whetstone Park!

We will meet to share food and fun and heartfelt understanding. Please
bring a dish of food to share, but if you cannot, just bring yourself.
All else will be provided. We will be there rain or shine (so hope for
sunshine). Family and friends are welcome.

Just for fun, we will have a white elephant gift exchange. Bring a
wrapped gift and we will play a game where you try to steal the best
gift for yourself. If you have lawn chairs, bring those too.

For those who wish to stay, the Clintonville Community Band and Choir
will be in the Park of Roses at 7:00 for a free concert.

How to Get There: The entrance to Whetstone Park and the Park of Roses
is next to the Whetstone Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library at
3909 North High Street. It is north of North Broadway and south of
Henderson and Cook. Take the road back until it crosses a small bridge.
Make a left after the bridge and look for the Sleep Picnic sign.

Wish I could have made it today, really like the speakers dealing with
narcolepsy. I was unable to make it to the meeting due to a prior engagement.
I was wondering if anyone had a summation of what was discussed at the meeting
that might be helpful to those of us with narcolepsy who were unable to attend.

Thanks,
Danielle

Closed Group / 294 members

Wisdom is nothing more than healed pain. ~Robert Gary Lee
Est. February 2,
2010,

This is a place to help collect, sort, and disseminate information about
resources for people with Narcolepsy. Many of us have other autoimmune and/or
autonomic issues, and we do discuss this also. This is not a support group but a
place where information on Narcolepsy can be discussed. (this has now changed)
This is not a group of professionals giving advice. This is strictly a place for
people with narcolepsy to discuss what is known. Please know that some of this
info may be completely wrong and that a person must always rely on what their
medical providers tell them. This is not a place for diagnosis.

If
you wish to discuss a topic that has already been created, then please post your
comments within the existing category. Create a new discussion only if there is
not a discussion already started.

Narcoleptics
http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/2210106425/members/

Open Group / 342 members

A group for those of us who have narcolepsy. I have no clue what, if anything,
will become of this group, but I looked for an existing one for narcoleptics and
only found one that seemed to be making fun of it, so I decided to create a
group for those of us who actually have it.

Idiopathic
hypersomniacs are also more than welcome to join this group, as are
family/friends of people with N/IH.

Danielle and others,

Just to make it clear, we didn't have a "real professional" at our meeting last
Sunday. Instead (and in some ways much better) one of our members, Laura Evert
(aka dreamiest girl ever), caught us up on some of the sources available to
people with narcolepsy. Most of the sources she told us about are now posted on
this site. One is a message about a young woman named Julie Flygare who has
become an activist (One would have thought that was an oxymoron for someone with
narcolepsy, but apparently not in Julie's case)and is the author of a blog "REM
runner" among other things. Another source she told us about is on this site,
but accessible not under "messages" but under "files". It lists some of the
sources on Facebook that are very active regarding narcolepsy. (Darn. I guess
I'll have to bite the bullet and finally sign up for Facebook.) Laura also
brought us some copies of a very good article describing N that appeared in the
New York Times on Tues., March 6 titled "Too Often, Doctors Overlook
Narcolepsy".

One of my favorite sources of information is the book "Narcolepsy Primer: A
Guide for Patients and Professionals" by Meeta Goswami and Michael Thorpy of the
Montefiore Medical Center in The Bronx. It can be ordered through their website
www.narcolepsy institute.org for $12. It's only slightly dated having been
published in 2006, but packs a lot of information into 36 pages.

Does anybody else have some favorite sources of information regarding sleep to
recommend? Don't be shy. Speak up!

Support Group Members,
I posted a questionnaire on Sept. 7 so that we can learn more about the
needs of this group as far as having meetings goes. I received a good
response from those on our snail mailing list but very little response
from those of you who get your information about our group from our
Yahoo site. If face-to-face meetings are of interest to you--or
not--please answer the questionnaire and send your answers to me
directly at ellenhaider@....
Thanks,Ellen

Support Group Members,
Please join us on Sun., Oct. 28, 2012 from 4-6pm.
We are no longer able to have our meetings at the Elizabeth Blackwell
Center, so we're trying something a little different. We will meet at
the Corner Stone Deli and Cafe, 3296 N. High Street in Columbus. That's
2 blocks south of North Broadway. It is a popular Clintonville carry
out and hang out. We've reserved the side room for our group. The Deli
features both American and Asian cuisine at reasonable prices.
Topics:Summary of the Narcolepsy Network Conference (which is this
coming weekend in Cleveland).
A discussion of the results of the questionnaire that we recently sent
out. By coming to the meeting, you will have the opportunity to voice
your preferences as to where we go from here.
If there is sufficient time and attendance, we can split up into groups
divided by sleep disorder.
We hope to see you there!

A better rephrasing--why is the Elizabeth Blackwell Center no longer available?

Hi Steve and others who are interested in Steve's question,
OhioHealth decided that the upkeep needed on the building wasn't cost
effective. I feel that explanation is a little fishy, though, since
they made the same decision about the building right next to it that was
used for hospice. I think they have plans to extend the Riverside
complex but they haven't announced their plans, as far as I know. Most
of the things that were housed in Elizabeth Blackwell have been moved
across the street to the Gerlach Center.
We haven't given up on the possibility of meeting somewhere else in the
OhioHealth complex, but for the meeting coming up this next Sunday, we
decided to try meeting in a deli that has a side room from 4-6 so people
will be more likely to buy something to eat (although people are welcome
to come without purchasing anything, of course).
It should be a good meeting with 2 main topics: News about narcolepsy
from last weekend's conference The future of our group including the
results of our questionnaire
Hope you all can come, Ellen Haider
