Hello everyone!
I'm new to this group, invited by the lovely Pam Davis, and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Heather and I had WLS December 2004. I had my surgery done by Dr. Oxley at Williamson Medical Center. Pre-op, I weighed in at 340 lbs. To date, I have lost 190 lbs, weighing in at my goal weight of 150 lbs. My waist line went from 47 in down to 28 in, going from a (Lane Bryant size) 26/28 down to a 6/8. I had complications during my surgery where the NG tube tore out a staple when it was taken out and I ended up having a leak in my pouch. Dr. Oxley suggested that I undergo surgery again to repair it. I agreed for him to do so and was subsequently in the hospital for about a week recovering. I basically had surgery twice within a two day period and had a lot of pain during recovery. I went through about 4 bottles of Lortab, which became my best friend during that time. It was rough! I will say this though: despite all that, I would do it again in a heartbeat! I have never been this happy when looking in the mirror in a looooong time! Mind you, I still have to have surgery again for a tummy tuck, thigh lift and breast lift with implants, but with clothes on, I can actually say that I'm starting to not despise what I see in the mirror any more. One thing is for certain, however, I cannot thank Dr. Oxley enough for being such an awesome doctor and I certainly cannot thank YOU Pam for being the most amazing, helpful, awesome, hilarious, kick-@$$ person I know of! You have been there for me and everyone else you have come in contact with and touched us in such a way that words cannot explain. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You truly are a blessing!

Last March I found out I was pregnant, and, in May, I found out I was pregnant with twins! Wow! I ended up being put on bedrest at home and then eventually taken to Centennial (AMAZING NICU NURSES!!!!! THE BEST!!!) where I delivered my two babies when I was 29 weeks pregnant. During my pregnancy, I gained 25 pounds and had trouble putting on the weight. I was given snacks every two hours yet I still didn't gain enough weight to support twins. You would never know that they weighed 2 lbs 3 oz and 1 lb 15 oz when they were born these days - They are as healthy looking as can be! Although they were quite the surprise, they are my life now. Has anyone else been through a similar situation where they got pregnant and could not gain the weight during the pregnancy? It is definitely hard trying to get back to my eating habits since I had to pretty much forget about them while pregnant in order to gain weight. I am still managing my weight well, but I noticed that I am eating a bit more quantity wise along with craving more junk food. Has any one had any problems with that also?

Hope yall had a good weekend!
Your friend,
Heather
PS, I have posted my before and after photos in the photo section for this group. :)

Well, I'm back on track and losing again. I had my second fill and
couple of weeks ago and I'm a lot more restricted. does anyone have
any food suggestions for a change in pace. I'm getting tired with the
same old things and need a variety to choose from. I love convenience
and have a hard time finding something that is "legal" and is easy. I
have began working in a pizza place for the summer and wish that I
could find something there that sounds good and goes down well, too.
does anyone have any ideas???

I think she wants cottage cheese instead of broth, but that close they want you to eat whats on the diet because they are trying to shrink your liver smaller for surgery. you can do it.

Broth is considered a liquid (fluid/ like water).  So it counts towards the fluid intake.

This is usually a liquid diet, so the broth is probably okay, but I would at least wait until Monday and check with the nut, better to be safe than sorry.

Hey Doyle!
Welcome to the group first of all! Second of all the decision regarding which surgery to choose is strictly a personal one. I chose the gastric bypass because of the restrictions and the dumping syndrome that go along with it. I still have head hunger though and that does not go away without lots of connections with the groups and some therapy. I can't say that I've been physically hungry since surgery. I do have dumping which is a blessing and a curse because it's like russion roulette. You never know what you will dump on so it's best to stay away from anything that there is a potential to dump from. These are two things that were appealing for me when I chose the RNY. With the band and the RNY, you have restriction which is great. You can only eat so much. I reach a certain point when I'm eating that if I eat another bite I think I'll throw up. Sounds weird but it works for me.

I haven't lost very fast with my RNY. I've lost 54lbs in 3.5 months. But I'm happy with that. It just takes more patience! Men usually lose fairly quick so either surgery you'd do well with!

I wish you luck in your decision!
Janie

I'm sure you have each discussed this a million times on your

but my wife seems to think the gastric bypass is the way to go. If
you have any comments you'd like to share with me I would love to

Another real aspect of both of the surgeries is mortality. My
sister-in-law starting crying when I saw her last because she is
strongly against me having the lap band. She had a dear friend who
died of complications (though they were brought on mainly by a prior
health matter.) I understand her point and if I didn't HAVE to get
in a car to drive to work, knowing how dangerous the highway I take
to work is , I wouldn't. Unfortunately, that's what life is. It's a
gamble every minute and every second. We never know what's around

Ultimately only YOU can decide what surgery to have.  I can share with you why "I" decided:

1.) I am self pay and Lap-Band is about $10,000 cheaper
2.) I like that it is adjustable.
3.) I don't risk dumping syndrome.
4.) I was only out of work for 4 days (even though HH made it CLEAR this should not be a deciding factor...lol)
5.) The mortality rate is lower.
6.) I did not like the malabsorbtion factor.

I am from the Lap Band minority on this board.  I was considered a light weight!!!! I only had 80 lbs to lose but 4 co morbidities.  I chose Lap band because of this and I wanted to lose slower to help me learn lessons somewhere I had not learned.  Portion control and that I was not going to starve.  I had surgery last November and have lost 38 lbs.  I had a set back in May and June with Pneumonia.  Dr Houston took most of my fill out till I recovered and the pain level was down.  This is what I like about the lap band.  It can be adjusted up and down to get you to a perfect spot.  I was almost there.  But it is also removable heaven forbid something happened that I needed my whole stomach back but it can be done.  This is really a personal decision that only can be made by you with the input of your DR.  Do not let a DR talk you into something you don’t feel comfortable with.  Do your research!

Doyle,

First let me say, the type of surgery is a personal choice and I suggest you research both equally to decide which is best for you, your history of diets and your circumstances.  I chose RNY because of my starting weight (420 lbs) and I knew if I could overeat I would.  I also chose it because you tend to lose faster with it than the band from what I researched.   I can only tell you my choices and why I can not tell you what you should choose.   I just would say pray hard about your choice.

Good luck,
Darlene H

Praise the Lord the scales have moved the last couple of days. I went
from 177 on Monday to 175 yesterday and this morning I am at 173.6. I
am jumping up and down this morning. Maybe I am on the way again. I
have another 22.4 lbs to lose between now and 8/28. My goal is to be at
my ideal body weight by my one year surgiversary. I know I can do this.
Ya'll just keep helping me with positive reinforcement and I will make
it.
This is the greatest group of people.
I love and appreciate you all.
Many Blessings

Hello everyone in Yahoo - land!

Feel free to go in under the files section, click on the folder testimonials, then click add file and place your testimonial in there. I think maybe we should all do it as a message too; by placing it in the testimonials folder, it will be really easy for new people to go in and read everyone's story.

Also, under the photos section, you can click there, click to add a new album and upload your before and after photos. I received an e-mail from yahoo saying they were doing away with yahoo photos, but I think that is talking about if you use yahoo to store your personal photo collection, not when using it within a group.

Wow!   Thanks for the quick replies everyone.  You've all been very kind.  Bobbie, I'll be thinking about you in the next couple weeks.  All the best to you on your upcoming surgery.  As to my situation, I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan and the requirement is one year doctor supervised diet.  My year is up in November.  I'm looking forward to not getting stuck in the seats at the theater.  A shout-out of thanks to Tammy, Lisa and Pam for your replies.

Doyle,
please don't concern yourself with the diet plan as it will be over
with before you know it, mine was and it was 6 months, but the good
part is after you get your last visits paperwork and send it in they
should approve it pretty quickly.....anyway keep us informed on how
you are doing and i have to tell you that you have joined "The best
little support group around". The folks here have been so warm and
supportive as well as very informative, i've learned a lot here and i
love them all....

good luck on your diet!

How many ounces of liquids have you consumed today?? Remember, you need to take
in a minimum of 64 ounces daily. Water is best, crystal light, diet minute maid
light, fruit 2 O, sugar free Jell-O, sugar free popsicles are all good choices
and count toward your total.

Are you keeping up with your food journal?
Remember, it doesn't have to be sophisticated - just record
what you are eating, how much, when, WHY and how you feel afterward.

You can utilize websites such as http://fitday.com/ or go through the patient
portal on our site https://www.exemploportal.net/pp_l16/. In addition, websites
such as http://www.calorieking.com may help you with calories, fat grams, etc.

Remember your body is counting every single calorie whether you do or not!

The Good Protein Chart

Protein can help you shed those unwanted pounds and keep your belly full. But it's important to eat the right amount and the right kind of protein to get the health benefits.

Fish & Seafood

Seafood is one of the best sources of protein because it's usually low in fat. Fish such as salmon is a little higher in fat but it is the heart-healthy kind: omega-3 fatty acids.

White-Meat Poultry

Stick to the white meat of poultry for excellent, lean protein. Dark meat is higher in fat. The skin is loaded with saturated fat, so remove skin before cooking.

Milk, Cheese Yogurt

Not only are dairy foods excellent sources of protein but they also contain valuable calcium. Choose skim or low fat dairy to keep bones and teeth strong, prevent osteoporosis and enhance weight loss.

Eggs

Eggs are one of the least expensive forms of protein. The American Heart Association says normal healthy adults can safely enjoy an egg a day.

Beans

One-half cup of beans contains as much protein as 3 ounces of broiled steak. Plus, these nutritious nuggets are loaded with fiber to keep you feeling full for hours.

Pork Tenderloin

This great and versatile white meat is 31% leaner than 20 years ago.

Soy

Twenty five grams of soy protein daily can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Combine soy protein foods like tofu with a healthy low fat diet.

Lean Beef

Lean beef has only one more gram of saturated fat than a skinless chicken breast. Lean beef is also an excellent source of zinc, iron and vitamin B12.

Protein on the Go

Grab a meal replacement drink, cereal bar or energy bar. Check the label to be sure the product contains at least 6 grams of protein, and is low in sugar and fat.

Good morning everyone -

Thank you for being the first ones to join our new group. As we transition the existing group to this one, it may be a little aggravating at times, but I'm sure you'll hang in there! We will be going through the current member list and sending them all an invitation with a link to join this group. Please feel free to click on the photos section, create your own folder and add your before and after photos. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be adding ALL of our support groups to the calendar, we'll add links to websites and additional information under the files section.

Thank you again and have a great weekend!

Pam Davis, RN, CCM

PS - I have a question - how do I add the automatic signature to my postings? I can't find it under the help section anywhere.

Thanks!
