Re: [centennial_support_group] This or that?

Hey Doyle!
Welcome to the group first of all! Second of all the decision regarding which surgery to choose is strictly a personal one. I chose the gastric bypass because of the restrictions and the dumping syndrome that go along with it. I still have head hunger though and that does not go away without lots of connections with the groups and some therapy. I can't say that I've been physically hungry since surgery. I do have dumping which is a blessing and a curse because it's like russion roulette. You never know what you will dump on so it's best to stay away from anything that there is a potential to dump from. These are two things that were appealing for me when I chose the RNY. With the band and the RNY, you have restriction which is great. You can only eat so much. I reach a certain point when I'm eating that if I eat another bite I think I'll throw up. Sounds weird but it works for me.

I haven't lost very fast with my RNY. I've lost 54lbs in 3.5 months. But I'm happy with that. It just takes more patience! Men usually lose fairly quick so either surgery you'd do well with!

I wish you luck in your decision!
Janie

Hello again everybody:
I'm sure you have each discussed this a million times on your
other board, but since I'm new here and I really want to KNOW, I'll
ask this question again. Which surgery would you recommend, Lap Band
or Gastric Bypass, and why? I had been leaning towards the lap band
but my wife seems to think the gastric bypass is the way to go. If
you have any comments you'd like to share with me I would love to
hear them. Honestly, I just want whatever will make my body stop
hogging calories and stockpiling fat.
Another real aspect of both of the surgeries is mortality. My
sister-in-law starting crying when I saw her last because she is
strongly against me having the lap band. She had a dear friend who
died of complications (though they were brought on mainly by a prior
health matter.) I understand her point and if I didn't HAVE to get
in a car to drive to work, knowing how dangerous the highway I take
to work is , I wouldn't. Unfortunately, that's what life is. It's a
gamble every minute and every second. We never know what's around
the bend. That having been said, however, I do want to make a sound,
sensible choice and avoid as many issues as possible.
Thanks for your input in advance and I hope I haven't broken
any rules by asking about the safety issues of each surgery.

Doyle
