Hello All,

I am Warner Seem's assistant at TSCA. We wanted to invite our library
consultant to the LOOM group, any ideas on how to do that?

Thank you!

Emilie:

Could you please get in touch with Della Lawhon at NESA
(dlawhon@...) concerning this issue. I am also copying Della on this
e-mail. Della recently asked about the possibility of persons who are
not affiliated with any Council member college being part of the LOOM Yahoo
Group, such as librarians and acupuncturists not from AOM schools,
researchers, or just any interested person. Per your e-mail query, outside
consultants to AOM school libraries might be another category.

I mentioned to Della that in general, participation in Council
committee activities (including those of LOOM) is a benefit of membership in
the Council. Thus, only representatives from the Council's member colleges
participate in committee work and meetings. However, in view of the fact
that this issue is of first impression, and partly because LOOM could be
viewed a little differently in some respects than other committees because
of its interdependency with non-AOM library networks, Della and I were
inclined to let LOOM have a discussion concerning the matter at the Chicago
LOOM meeting.

One issue is whether there may be different categories of persons
who could rightfully participate in LOOM meetings and/or the LOOM Yahoo
Group. For example, is there a valid distinction between someone who is
actively working with a member school library as a consultant and other
outside persons? Suppose LOOM wanted to invite an outside consultant to
address its meeting...that would not seem to be a problem inasmuch as the
Council has brought in outside persons to assist with weekend workshops and
with plenary panel presentations on certain subjects, such as technology in
the classroom. Certainly, it would be in the interest of the Council to
assist LOOM in its work, but consistent with what I believe is a valid
principle that participation in Council activities and committees is a
benefit for members only. These are some of the issues that could be
discussed at the LOOM meeting and perhaps form the basis of a recommendation
by LOOM.

Because of the importance of this issue for LOOM and the general
principle of participation in Council activities as a member benefit, I have
also copied Council President Lixin Huang on this e-mail.

Thank you,

David

Let's start an email thread of the LOOM work we've been doing since
our Spring meeting.

To start...

I setup this Yahoo group which includes meeting minutes.

If you're working on something or have completed a project you were
assigned. Please reply and let us know what you've been doing.

Best,

i think this should be discussed in october in chicago.  i see possibility for participation by non-loom persons on a case by case basis.  probably full library service help should be first given to loom members, however.  i will be sending out a new copy of the loom directory soon.  i am thinking of going to chicago, but i will have probably to pay my own way.

Dear LOOM,

I suspect we should start thinking about the agenda for the upcoming
Fall meeting in Chicago (Oct 19, 1:30-500pm).

Here are some topics I'm aware of and there are likely more. Please
reply with any ideas you have about the meeting.

1. Get updates on three ongoing projects
     - LOOM Member Directory
     - Preferred OM journals list
     - Preferred Library Vendors list
     - OM journal article bibliographic database progress report
2. Makes plans to select a chair and governing process for LOOM.
(David has suggested we formalize the committee.)
3. Determine who can attend LOOM meetings, membership status, voting
rights, information access...
4. ACAOM update: I have contacted ACAOM and asked for more
information on the Library/Learning Resources sections of the
Essential Requirements for the Masters and Doctoral programs.
Essentially, do they have quantitative or qualitative measures by
which libraries and learning resources are evaluated?

If you know of a topic we need to address in the meeting... Please
feel free to suggest it for the agenda on the yahoo group.

Best to you all,
Della

Hello everyone,

I have posted the Fall 2005 LOOM Meeting Report here on the LOOM
Yahoo site -- see the blue navigation box to the right. These were
circulated to folks who attended the meeting and have now been
forwarded to the CCAOM.

Please take a look when you can. The report lists activities
underway
and our discussion at the meeting.

Also added to the Files area is a draft of the CCAOM Library
Directory. Last fall a number of us worked on this. Being that a
few
months have passed, it's possible changes need to be made to the
directory. Please take a look at your entry in this directory and
email me any changes.

Best to you all,
Della

us with a review of some software applications used to manage library
catalogs. This is an excel spreadsheet stored in the Files area of our

Does your library use a system not noted in the spreadsheet? Please
feel free to download this document ,edit it, and upload a revised
version to our Yahoo group with whatever information you can provide
about systems you currently use or have used in the past.

One of the databases here on this list (see the link "Databases") is a

Of course,
I cannot remember the login and password, but also could not find the Files

We use Cybertools for Libraries. It is great and I want to check if it's on

Reports on Current Initiatives
Name Change.  Upon discussion and vote at this meeting, the Committee chooses to change its name from Librarians of Oriental Medicine (LOOM) to Libraries of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (LCAOM). We have sought endorsement from CCAOM's Executive Committee for this change.

WORKING GROUP REPORTS
A. Membership
CCAOM Library Contact Directory.  Began an update of the 2005 Directory of CCAOM Libraries with contact information for key library staff and links to library catalogs.  This directory has been posted on the LOOM/LCAOM Yahoo Group. The Committe circulated a copy of the 2005 Library Directory, asking school's check their school's entry assuring that the person responsible for the library and at most one other key member of your staff appear in your entry and that their emails are correct.
- Continued thanks for creating this directory go to Jim Emdy, Five Branches, Virginia Rodes, Tai Sophia, and Della Lawhon, New England School of Acupuncture.
YAHOO Group. Once the directory is updated with corrections a promotions email will go out to encourage schools to have their library staff join the Yahoo Group.
- Thank you to David Sale, CCAOM for his management of the Yahoo Group.

B. Collection Development
Journals. Two separate documents have been received by the LOOM/LCAOM to help identify journals appropriate for CCAOM school libraries.   The first received last year was a survey of journals held in member schools' libraries; the second is a spreadsheet of proposed journals that would constitute a basic collection.  The Committee requested financial support in the amount of $500 to update and complete the school library survey, to develop journal selection criteria, and to gather more information on journals to enable schools to evaluate the appropriateness of each resource for their library: this project if funded will be completed and available in 6 months.
UPDATE: the executive committee accepted the proposal.
    - Many thanks to Warner Seem, Tri-State College of Acupuncture and Claudia O'Neill,  Institute of Taoist Education, Inc.

Electronic Resources: The Committee received a report at the LOOM/LCAOM meeting of electronic resources.  If time allows, the funds requested previously would extend to expanding the report on selected databases and electronic resources.
- Thanks again to Warner Seem, Tri-State College

C. Entry Level Standards and CCAOM Libraries
The Committee discussed the role the library plays relevant to
Collections and information management
Faculty support
Training in information literacy and critical thinking for faculty and students
National education standards in place for library in higher education
Entry Level Standards for First Professional Doctorate for AOM

D. New Initiatives
Proposal to finalize and synthesize journal survey and subscription resources.  If funded this resource will be complete by September 2006, posted on the Yahoo Group for review and revision.

Renewed commitment to develop LOOM/LCAOM Mission Statement and history of the committee. We will have a draft ready  for review at Fall LOOM/LCAOM meeting: Wendy Matus, Eastern School of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine & Della Lawhon, NESA

Collection Management subcommittee has a new member: Roberta Santo, PIHMA.  Della will contact.

Yahoo Group promotion will follow meeting to build participation and share library reports and resources.  Della Lawhon, NESA

At this conference's strategic planning meeting, LCAOM was asked to provide information about available resources for libraries to consider for purchase.

At the CCAOM Business Meeting Paul Karsten, Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine, asked LCAOM to write a response to the accreditation standard ER 11.

Meeting ended at 5:00pm

Attendees:

With the discussion of doctoral entry-level programs afoot the role of the library in higher education was of particular interest at this last CCAOM meeting.

I'm sharing with you a couple articles and info mentioned at the meeting.

If you have any ideas or comments, please feel free to post!

Be well,
Della

"Information Literacy" is defined as the ability to know when there is a need for information, and be able to locate, manage, critically evaluate and use information for problem solving, research, decision making, and continued professional development.  Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning and is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education.  It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume control over their own learning.

Della,

I am sorry I was unable to attend the meeting.

Della, Can you please send me via e mail the documents on the Journal list and survey.  I never received any of them.

I am currently working on a journal list and do need to include this.

Or, at least tell me where I can go to get the documents.

Thanks

There is now a link to the Five Branches Institute OPAC Library from
the Five Branches home page at http://www.fivebranches.edu. Click on
Student Life, then on Library Services. Recently I have added new
links to databases and online journal resources as well as the usual
access to the online catalog.

If it is desirable, i could do a demonstration of libraryworld
software at the october meeting in arizona. i most likely will attend.
