Aloha,
Nice to visit with some of you in Arizona. I am now starting to work
on building our holdings. Does anyone know of a recommened book list
for different topics such as herbs, acupuncture, etc. I could use
some help deciding which books are key and essential books for our
library to carry so I can put together a development plan.

Dear All,
I'm also looking for just such a suggested book list. Up to now we've used the NCCAOM suggested books per module as our only 'list'.
thanks,

Dear all,

What a wonderful experience I have had the last 4 years working with you.

I wanted to write and let you know that I have left NESA to focus on
my private practice which has grown despite my ignoring it. My last
day at NESA was Jan 19th, and I'm already seeing patients 6 days a
week in my office -- and loving it!

One of the wonderful staff in NESA's library has accepted the position
of Library Manager and is doing a great job.

LOOM / LCAOM has accomplished a number of things not the least of
which is building community. I've spoken with David Sales about my
stepping down as LCAOM Committee Chair and I know if you have ideas
for the group that he would welcome your call or email.

I wish for all of you abundant health, peace, ...and unlimited book
budgets!

If I can be of help to you or your organizations, please don't hesitate
to contact me.

BTW: in terms of a basic book list... seems to me this would be a
great project to work with the newly formed national association of
AOM teachers and with other CCAOM committees. David may have some
ideas or this could be brought up at the next meeting.

My very best to you all,
Della

Dear LCAOM Committee Members:
As you know,Della Lawhon, the former committee chair, resiged her
postion at NESA to pursue full-time AOM practice. The Council's
Executive Committee solicited applications for the chair position and
was recently pleased to appoint Jim Emdy, the librarian at Five
Branches, as the new committee chair. I do apologize for not notifying
the committee of this appointment sooner but I mistakenly thought I had
notified the full Council. The LCAOM Yahoo Group is the most active
among the Council's Yahoo groups and your interest and work is to be
applauded. Thank you also for supporting Jim in his new leadership
role.

Hi Jim, We at NY Chiropractic Coll. are newbies to CCAOMLOOM. Looking
forward to the basic book list. Is the list a revision of a previous
list? If so, is the old list available anywhere? Thanks, Dan

Hi All,
I had no idea that a meeting was coming up. Did I miss an e-mail or
something? This is the first I heard about the meeting.
Unfortunately, I will be in Washington, DC on May 7to 9th and am unable to
attend the CCAOM LOOM meeting.

I have just completed a over a year long journal research project which I
can share with LOOM members, if you wish. It is a selected list of Journals
in Oriental and Complementary Medicine. Each title has a hyperlink to the
journals website. I am almost done with a publisher list of periodical
sources, but it is not ready for distribution. It was funded in part by the
Medical Library Group of Southern California & Arizona and by the Pacific
College of Oriental Medicine Library. The journal list will be shown at the
MLA meeting in Philadelphia May 18 to 22 and after that LOOM members who are
interested can send me an e mail.

If you discuss Library catalog & information systems, I highly recommend the
CyberTools for Libraries system. It is inexpensive and has all the bells
and whistle you need to run an efficient operation with circulation,
catalog, cataloging and search capabilities. They can be contacted at
1800-894-9206. PCAOM and New England School of Acupuncture and I believe
Hawaii use it. There may be others who also have it. It makes sense for us
to have a group with some compatibility.

Sorry I am missing the meeting, and New Orleans. Let me know sooner next
time.

PS: Send me the final agenda and minutes so I can see what's coming up.

Jim,

I need to know on who’s authority were the top “100 ACAOM best books” selected?  Are they degreed MLS librarians, and faculty?

I think what people consider the best books is highly subjective and depends on what the various college faculty choose to use for their classes.

We should avoid this best label unless we are absolutely certain.

I think a list of 100 selected books In OM might be more suitable.  We do not want to label it the Best Books if only one person selected them.  Would this require review by a special ACAOM faculty.

Besides this will change constantly.

I believe it is a recommended list from the American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine's website (AAAOM).  It is only one schools recommended book list.
I am also looking forward to seeing a list.

Naomi,

I agree completely with what you say. However, in my opinion, there is great value in having some baseline for a young program with limited resources to justify its basic collection. I agree it should not be called 'Best Books' as that is a highly subjective judgment, but perhaps 100 Basic Books that can provide a foundation to build upon. Again, that is not to say a different 100 could not with equal validity be selected by a college, but this is a sample or model list that can be used as is or as a template/guide.

The meeting of the LOOM subcommittee of CCAOM took place on Wednesday, May 9th in New Orleans.  A summary of the meeting was presented at the open general meeting on Friday, May 11th.  Jim Emdy presided and the following persons attended:
Mary Able/Institute of Taoist Education and Acupuncture
Ewa Hammer/DRCOM
Will Morris/AOMA

Discussion centered on several key library issues:
1.  Creating ordered and systematic data bases for the collection.
2.  Selection of appropriate software to facilitate
3. Sharing of data and mutual help in cataloging and maintenance of the collection; need for a "union" catalog for member libraries.

Relating to the first question, a lively discussion took place regarding classification systems, and some nuts and bolts of cataloging a collection.  There was general agreement that the Library of Congress or National Medical Library classification schemes were preferred over ad-hoc systems or the Dewey Decimal system.

Two software packages were examined: LibraryWorld and Cybertools.  Both vendors provide for "union" catalogs.  LibraryWorld is less expensive than Cybertools and is constantly being upgraded,e.g. adddition of Z39.50 search capabilities, but the cheapest version does not have strong reporting capability.  Cybertools seems to offer a complete package of services and may be the choice for the future; at present some attendees felt that the listed cost of Cybertools was prohibitive at this time.

The OPAC (online public access catalog) offered by the Five Branches Institute is available for searching and for guidance for cataloging.  Records can be copied and brought over to the home library for paste up.  Jim Emdy is available to consult on questions of collection arrangement and cataloging issues.  The Five Branches online catalog is available from the Five Branches Institute home page, go to Student services, then Library, where a link to the OPAC catalog is available.

A packet of booklists was prepared and made available to participants.  A master check list in Excel format summarizes recommended texts from various sources.  I will attempt to add this document as an attachment to these minutes.  If you do not receive or cannot open the attachment, please let me know and I can send you a packet by regular mail.

The next meeting of the subcommittee willl be in Portland, Oregon, in October.  It is hoped that earlier information on time and place for the meeting will enhance attendance.

Any questions, please email me at library@....

PCOM looked at getting it but it is too expensive for us.
Students use it independently and really like it.

Maybe ccaomloom could negotiate a consortium fee if many institutions want
it, but it would have to go through our presidents.
Let me know if you pursue this.

I just got a responce for the institutional prices vs. cost to
individuals. We are also at odds with the cost to the institution.
The limited time frame that it is good for is also an uncomfortable
situation. Is anyone else more familiar with it? Is it really better
than spending the funds to just expand the number of study guides to
prep for National Boards?

Hello,

The moderator of the ccaomloom group has changed the group's name.
This means that both the group's email address and the group home page
location have changed.

The group email address:
ccaomlcaom@yahoogroups.com

The group home page location:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ccaomlcaom

If you have links which point to this group or an address book entry
for the group, you should update them, as the old addresses will no
longer work.
