James, I will not be attending, but here is my input so far.
1 We reveiwed the accreditation doc, looks OK. I sent a few suggestions to our VP who is attending.  Needs info on Digital Libraries and Web pages.
2. No comment, do not know what this is.
3. Yes, We have a facebook page, but it needs fixing, somehow it got integrated with mine. Looking into this.
4. No comment. we do not keep herbs
5. Yes we need to proceed with consortium.  I am ready to serve on this

6. Our Library got OVID e Books on TCM. It looks good maybe this is one we can try to get consortium discounts for in the future.

Question:  How are other libraries handling doctoral dissertations, do you scan and make available?  What is the copyright form your students have to sign?  Would like info on this.

More crowdsourcing!

Does your school use online test prep materials?

Is the library in charge of it?

Does the cost come out of the library budget?

What service/company do you use?

Would you recommend it to other schools?

Andi,
I forwarded your inquiry to our student advisors.  Yes, the library has test prep software that students use.  The cost is covered by the College, but it is charged to the Library.
Re prep assistance the advisors can answere those questions.

We have Q-TestPrep. It comes in CD format (not online), but still effective. The library purchases an annual license, and students seem to like it.

AGENDA FOR LCAOM MEETING, CHICAGO 2012
The meeting of the library committee of CCAOM takes place on April 26, Thursday,
6:30 pm CST at the North Shore Westin in the Maple Room.

1. Consideration of the accreditation document, which may be ready for a vote by
the full council to submit ti ACAOM. The document is in the files section of
the LCAOM Yahoo group.

2. Informational discussion of using mixed method qualitative/quantitative
research methods in Oriental medicine.

3. Discussion of OM libraries and social media: does your library have a
facebook account?

4. Role of libraries in researching/maintaining information on herbal compounds,
vendor reliability, etc. Response to a queries from the Herbal Committee at the
Safety Harbor meeting.

5. Progress report on library committee presence in CCAOM.NET.
Two documents are available from the CCAOM.NET page. I am working on other
aspects of the site.

6. Consideration of past unresolved issues, e.g. formation of a consortium. On
this issue I feel that if we are to proceed, we need a fully involved committee
to work on this. We need a strong lead person to move forward on this. The
chair person will act as coordinator. WE should establish a full set of
documentation on what responsibilities the lead person should take on.
7. Question: does your institution support online test prep software? What is
the library's role in preparing students for these tests?

Supporting documents will be provided as needed. Please comment and make
suggestions. Thank you.

Hello everyone:

We are currently re-examining the idea of obtaining ebooks through EBSCO. In
the past we have not found the titles we needed using their service. Is there a
service or vendor that you use that you would recommend? How do ebooks work in
your Library? I'd appreciate knowing more about this if you have a moment.
Thank you.

I'm in the same boat as you. We are looking at acquiring ebooks in the next fiscal year. I'm looking at EBSCO and OVID's TCM book collection. The OVID selection is really good (although most of the books we already carry in print) and are perpetual access, but are not available for download to personal devices. From what I understand, EBSCO does allow for downloading. Some things to think about... I'd love to hear what you decide on.

LCAOM MEETING ADENDA

Core Curriculum Committee meeting action on Evaluation Points Document

The CCC discussed the Evaluation Points Document (henceforth EPD) and decided
that the document was not within the scope of its charge. It was suggested that
the LCAOM and Accreditation committees should have jurisdiction. It was noted
that the EPD was useful as a tool for libraries, site visitors and institutions
in assessing library adequacy. Jim Emdy made it clear the document was advisory
for libraries and not meant to address ACAOM standards. One path forward would
be to coordinate the EPD with actually ACAOM statements of standards.

2.Additional agenda item:

Each committee has been asked to examine its mission statement, name and mode of
meetings.
Current name is LCAOM; suggested name (and name at CCAOM.NET) is libraries of
AOM.
Current mission statement: not sure
Suggested mission statement: The Library committee's primary mission is to
support and develop libraries in creation, maintenance and expansion of the
knowledge base of Oriental Medicine and enhance access and effective use of
library materials. The committee seeks to provide cooperative solutions for all
member libraries.

Current meeting schedule: every six months, with telephone call in capability.
Options:
--Maintain current schedule.
--Meet annually with telephone ( or other technology) plus regular conference
call remote meetings, particularly for subcommittee work.
--some combination of the above.

1. Name of library committee and structure, etc.

Name: Libraries of AOM
Charge: as before: To make recommendations concerning the development of
libraries of AOM.
Meeting structure: as is, twice a year, with telephone/technological
connections.

2. Evaluation points draft document

The library committee voted to send the document on the Executive Council for
further deliberation with the understanding that the document would not be sent
on to ACAOM until further review is made to allow for concerns about the
document expressed by attendees are addressed. It is understood that this is a
draft document and is set of benchmarks or suggestions to be considered as
guidance in evaluating adequacy of library services.

3. ICD-11

Information on the alpha version of the updated ICD-11 document was presented
and members were urged to comment on the document. The committee expressed
appreciation for the work of those who prepared the document.

4. Consortium

A new subcommittee to pursue extablishing a consortium of OM libraries has been
formed. It was agreed that momentum on this issue must be sustained and that a
strong lead person may be needed to pull it all together. The members are:

Naomi Broering, Laura King, Candise Branum, Michelle Kopteros

The chair will work with this group and coordinate efforts in this area.

5. CCAOM.NET

The library committee is up on the CCAOM.NET site and two documents have been
uploaded. Library members are urged to join the group. As the Droople site
becomes fully operational, documents from the Yahoo user group will be migrated
to the new site. Eventually we may use the new site instead of the Yahoo user
group; at this time the Yahoo user group is still the main vehicle for
communication.

6. OM libraries and social media.

At this time most libraries are not using Facebook or similar social media
sources. OCOM has a facebook account with some activity, as does Tai Sophia.
Using social media to reach potential library users may be a useful tool for
outreach.

7. Online test prepartion software.

The current practice seems to be that students do this on their own. Five
Branches Library provides a link on the online catalog/research page to sites
provided by NCCAOM.

8. E-Books.

At present there is some activity in this area. PCOM subscribes to OVIDE; some
libraries have attempted to work with EBSCO for services. Five Branches
University library urges to use e-book services provided by nearby public
libraries. To date the chair has not found sufficient relevant materials in
e-book format for OM topics.

9. Other topics

A lively discussion on a variety of related topics touched on subjects such as
tensions between world views of the East and West, how to assess effectiveness
in library services and related ideas. It was suggested that one tool would be
some sort of assessment test for new students to be used as a base line, then
assess in later years using the same assessment test to measure change in
competency. The summary here does not encompass the full scope of this
discussion.

Itis fine for Kelly Czap to market the magazine to the schools, but this
cannotbe done directly through the Council's national office as the office
doesnot promote specific vendors or journals to the membership. There are two
ways thepromotion can occur:

Ø She can go to the Council'swebsite, where there is contact information for
every school, and approach eachschool individually or collectively based on that
contact information. Referher to
http://www.ccaom.org/members.asp?sort=alpha(alpha list) or to
http://www.ccaom.org/members.asp?sort=state(state list).

Ø If Jim wants to, he can post her offer forAOM librarians on the CCAOM Yahoo
Group and/or on ccaom.net. If the AOMlibrarians want to make arrangements for
obtaining a poster for their schools, they are free to do so in accordance with
any internal school guidelines theschools may have regarding posters.

Here is a set of documents generated relating to consortium issues. this is an
agenda item for the Denver meeting. i will follow with a more specific proposal
for moving forward. Please comment.
Initial charge to the LCAOM subcommittee on consortium issues.
Pursuant to the decision made at the Chicago meeting of the Libraries of AOM
(aka LCAOM), I am proposing to move forward with work on developing plans for a
possible elaborated cooperative organization of OM libraries.

1. Formulation of a mission statement/"charge" of the subcommittee.

2. Review of past documents relative to consortium, most of which are in the
files section of the LCAOM Yahoo group.

3. Examination of existing library consortia; I will provide links to some of
these later.

4. Literary search on formatuion of consortia, etc. I have at least two
articles I can share.

5. Analysis of consortium issues in order to parse them into smaller interest
units which can be addressed.

6. Preparation of a report on efforts, to be presented in Denver in November.

I think ultimately we should be working through the Druple-based CCAOM.NET
portal, using WIKI document processes.
Initial statement, based on suggestions from Jim Emdy and elaborated by David
Sales.
The Consortium Subcommittee of the CCAOM Libraries of Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine Committee, seeks to develop and eventually implement a Consortium of
Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) Libraries to deliver reference and
communication resources to AOM students, staff and faculty. The means to this
end include possible purchase of relevant databases at reduced corporate rates,
coordinated Interlibrary loan (ILL) services, and communication services to
assist CCAOM member libraries. The consortium could establish its own webpage,
as well as use existing Internet based facilities such as the CCAOM Yahoo user
group and the CCAOM Drupal platform CCAOM.net. as a complex mix of information
systems environments with few issues related to performance. The consortium
design should provide a means of management and governance, and necessary
sourcing of funds to realize the goals of the consortium. This proposal is
subject to review by the full Committee, the CCAOM Executive Committee and
Finance Committee, and full Council.
The committee may wish to make specific recommendations about the following:
 What legal status should the Consortium have, if any? If the Consortium
establishes itself as a legal entity, there would be attendant contractual and
other liability for itself, and possibly for the member schools whose libraries
participate in the Consortium and for CCAOM as the membership organization for
the participating schools.
 Should the Consortium not have any legal status of its own, but instead
be a less formal association with dependence on CCAOM and/or member colleges for
funding, especially for purposes of purchasing relevant databases at reduced
corporate rates? Note: presumably, "corporate rates" would only be available for
corporate entities. If the Consortium is not a corporate entity, then presumably
only member colleges and/or CCAOM would be eligible to purchase the databases at
corporate rates. As a practical matter, given the number of member colleges that
might participate in the Consortium and the need for a database vendor to deal
with only one entity, is it inevitable that the Consortium will need to rely on
CCAOM to make the database purchases?
 Once purchased, where would the database be housed, who would
administer it on the backend, and what would the expectations be regarding the
administrator's time commitment and expertise?
 Does the Consortium intend to request funding from the Council and/or
participating colleges to purchase the relevant databases? If so, a cost
estimate would be needed.
 Are there any library consortia outside the AOM profession whose
administrative structure and practices might inform the development of an AOM
library consortium?
 It would seem desirable to develop a charter under which the Consortium
would function. Perhaps there are precedents from other professions in the area
of library consortia?

Comments of Naomi Broering regarding consortium issues.
Re: Consortium management and legal status. I think we should start with
something simple. We are novices at this.

1.Realistically, we do not have much clout to negotiate huge discounts for
databases, e books, etc from vendors, AND there is the potential issue that not
every school would want to pay for databases or digital resources that are not
of primary importance to them. Let's keep it simple.

2. A consortia groups should be established so individual schools can decide if
they want to subscribe to a discounted database, not have the council pay for
everyone. this could lead to problems and dissention.

3.Also, re management, is this something CCAOM can manage for the libraries? Our
libraries are so small, I do not see any particular librarian having the time or
staff to manage accounts.

4. There are informal Consortia arrangements, such as Memorandum of
Understanding that do not require legal agreements.

5. We also need to agree that for-profit and not-for-profit could be members.
Many of our schools are for-profit institutions.

We used to have a DOCHSIN Libraries consortium in DC that was quite informal
with memorandum of understanding which worked well for interlibrary loans. We
can look in google or wikipedia for samples.
And, the SCELC consortium is an example of a formal group that requires
membership. They charge fees and surcharges based on what each library
subscribes to and $s associated. They have a staff set-up which requires
salaries and quarters. This is a more elaborate example.

One other possible way for discounts is, if the librarians agree on a database
they all want, and then go to the vendor and negotiate a discount price directly
with the vendor. In this scenario the vendor invoices the libraries directly
and no staffing or management is required on our part.

Re. Interlibrary loans our libraries should join the NNLM in their region and
use DOCLINE for Ills. Its cheap and no extra management work.
Shared catalogs is tough unless everyone switiches to one system. We like ours
CybertoolsforLibraries.
However, we can certainly look each others catalogs if we share the URLs.
Alliances with larger colleges would be good too, but I think its very
expensive,

1. How you think your library can benefit from a consortial arrangement.
Comments of Andrea Anzalone, MLIS Library Manager Yo San University
I believe we would most benefit from having access to a greater number of online
resources (journal databases and e-books, for example), if cost-effective
licensing agreements could be negotiated with vendors. At present, our library
is an affiliate member of SCELC (Statewide California Electronic Library
Consortium, www.scelc.org ), which offers discounted subscriptions to a wide
assortment of databases. Perhaps it may be possible for LCCAOM libraries to
negotiate with SCELC as a group (?) I believe they have broadened their
definition of "California libraries" to include libraries outside the state, and
so perhaps it is worth investigating this possibility…

2. What do you think your library can offer a larger group and institutions.

We could consider offering ILL of journal articles and books on a reciprocal
basis. Since our library is small, however, we would need to develop guidelines
in this regard in order to enable ready access to materials for our students.

3. How you see LCCAOM libraries participating together toward effective resource
and services sharing.

As mentioned in question #1, negotiating discounts to databases would be the
greatest benefit.

4. Please also include your thoughts on what challenges you see in becoming part
of a consortium.
As you noted in your message, structuring the consortial systems and
organization would have to be worked out. My main concern as a part-time
library manager is the time factor. In other words, though I would love to
offer ILL to member libraries, for example, my time is very limited for
additional tasks. But levels of involvement and membership are topics to
explore further—and all in all I think being part of a consortium will have
tremendous benefits.

From David Sales:
I do not think the CCAOM national office can function administratively for any
consortium that is established as there are only two people in this office, one
of whom (Paula Diamond) definitely does not have administrative time for this as
she administers the entire CNT program, which is an ongoing daily
responsibility, and further serves as the CCAOM Finance Administrator for
day-to-day finances
