a commercial webmeeting site offers pc based conferencing up to 15 participants
which the software manufacture claims is simple to set up, easy to use and
reliable. the cost is $48 per month and offers a free 30 day trial period.

would this be of interest for a virtual meeting ahead of the gathering in New
Mexico in April?

possible topics:
role of the library group
cooperation with NML PubMed in enriching topic terms relative to OM
expansion of data services via iPhone, etc

Dear All:

The Council’s budget for 2010 includes funding for “committee meetings.” These funds are normally used to cover the costs of committee conference calls. Normally, most of the committees work by e-mail between meetings, but if the Library Committee wants to have a conference call before the Council’s spring meeting in Albuquerque, just pick a date and time convenient to committee members and provide me with that information. While this is entirely up to the committee, a convenient time that has worked well for conference calls involving the Council’s Executive Committee, whose members are spread through almost every time zone, is as follows: 9 am Pacific time, 10 am Mountain, 11 am Central, and 12 noon Eastern. Before the day and time that you select for your conference call, I will provide committee members with the telephone number for the Council’s conference call service and then “open the line” for the committee. The committee can then have its meeting. Would this work?

I can check with the hotel in Albuquerque about the possibility of having some type of real time online access in the committee meeting room for those members of the committee who cannot attend that meeting. Please advise what that technology would be called. Is it Skype? Something else?

Dear Jim,

I am the librarian at Yo San University here in Los Angeles and recently set up
Docline services through UCLA. The director there mentioned that it is possible
to set up a "Library Group" to route requests to for inter-library loan through
the Docline service. In addition the request will go to other institutions
stipulated in an individual library's routing table. The advantage to having a
Library Group, as I understand, would mean that fees for transmission could be
waived or at least minimalised, and that some of the more TCM related requests
may have a stronger chance of being found within our specialized libraries.

Therefore, my question to you is do you think it would be something to put forth
to the TCM Library Consortium on the yahoo groups? I think that this offers
another way for our libraries to be connected and share our resources.

If you would like to speak to the representative at UCLA directly her name is
Julie Kwan jkkwan@... or feel free to contact me with further
questions.

Kind Regards,

Sage

The LCAOM is scheduled to meet in Albuquerque NM on Thursday April 8th from 9:00
a.m. to Noon. I hope many of you can attend in person; however we are also
looking at using Skype facilities if feasible.

Provisional Agenda:
1. Continued formation of subcommittees to pursue goals of the Group.

2. Formation of a library group in DocLine. (see recent forwarded message)

3. Discussion of providing more adequate subject terms in PubMed for topics in
OM not currently well covered, e.g. Five Elements, Damp/fire diseases, etc.
Documentation will be provided. Per Naoi Boering we may be able to work
directly with the NML to carry this out.

Other items please submit;

We had Julie Kwan as a guest in the meeting LCAOM In LA about 4 years ago.

We have DOCLINE.  What you do is select the libraries that you wil send request to for your interlibrary loans.  I do best just going broadly to the network members and also to EFTS.

We have been a member of DOCLINE for years.  Everyone uses it already. Thanks.

Hi All,
I am pleased to report that I just heard from the NLM last week,  They are pursuing extending the subject headings for us, with the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. It will be a long term project, but once they initiate it, we can probably ask about other related subjects that you need..

I am just happy that this will be done by the National Library of Medicine.  The advantage for us, is that once the NLM includes the subjects they will maintain and update the files.  Our LCAOM libraries really do not have the resources to do this on our own.

I will keep you all posted as progress is made.
Sorry, but it's not likely that I can attend the meeting.  I have Skpe so let me know if that works out.

Subject: library evaluation.

Send Email Send Email

Here is a document regarding evaluation points in determining adequacy of
library services. it will eventually be put in the files section.

this could be part of the agenda in April.

Evaluation points for OM libraries.

General consideration:
Is the library an integral partner in promoting the mission of the institution?
Do the collection and services provided reflect the institution's
teaching/healing focus?

Overall physical facilities.
Does the library have sufficient space to accommodate normal use by students,
staff and faculty? Are operating open hours sufficient to meet research
demands?

Computer and related facilities.
Does the library offer the following computer/online services:
--internet hardwired computers with printer capabilities?
--is WiFi available?
--is a photocopier available?
--is there remote 24 hour online access to library resources such as the library
catalog and research databases?

Are the services provided sufficient to provide for present needs and allow for
future expansion?

The collection.
Does the library have sufficient materials of all sorts to support the needs of
the institution and meet the institution's stated goals? Is the collection
current and does it grow as new requirements are added? Are there other
institutions in the area which can provide services and material which the
library does not provide? This could be through the use of public libraries or
specific consortium-like arrangements.

Collection management.
Does the library have adequate management of the collection through software
programs which are based either in-house or are internet based? Do users have
access to library holdings and other research aids through computer/internet
access? Is the system robust enough to meet current needs and allow for further
expansion?

Staffing
Does the library have sufficient staffing to provide the research services
required by the user base and the institution's mission? Is there a
professional librarian on staff or is professional guidance provided by
volunteer or contract arrangements? Are all staff members given adequate
training for stated tasks.

Research.
Does the library have through a variety of resources the tools and materials
necessary to provide current awareness and literature competency? Is staff
trained to provide guidance in doing research? Does the library use other
research facilities such as public or medical libraries to supplement library
services? Is there internet or other computer base for 24 hour remote access to
research sites?

Finance.
Does the library receive sufficient funding through various sources to support
the abovementioned criteria? Is there overall sufficient support from the
institution for library functions?

Institutional communication..
Is there good communication between various parts of the institution to ensure
that the library is an integral of the institution's mission?

Does anyone know about or use a system called Epocrates PDAmedical software .  The sales rep has contacted us to give a demo.   I never heard of it before.  Looks like it's more about herbs and drugs, not journals or articles, but I do not know.

Is it worthwhile?  Their demo is April 12th if anyone wants to see it online.

Would you please let your committee members know via the CCAOM
Libraries Yahoo domain that there will be a speaker phone in the Libraries
committee meeting room in Albuquerque. The committee will meet on Thursday,
April 8, from 9 am – 12 noon (Mountain time) [thus, the meeting will begin in
other time zones as follows: 8 am Pacific time, 10 am Central, and 11 am
Eastern].

I will be present in the room at the beginning of the meeting to facilitate
access to CCAOM's conference call number so that everyone in the room (through
the speaker phone device) and AOM librarians at CCAOM colleges elsewhere who are
not able to attend the meeting can be virtually present. I will also be in the
room at the end of the meeting to facilitate the disconnect from the line as
CCAOM will be billed for a 3-hour conference call with a charge per each outside
participant on the call…this will not be inexpensive…but we do want to try to
facilitate the virtual presence of AOM librarians as this is an important
committee with important work. If you end the meeting before the allotted time
(i.e., before 12 noon Central time), please contact me by cell (number to be
provided) so that I can ensure prompt disconnect from the call.

Thanks for posting this notice, Jim

The call will be at CCAOM expense. Persons unable to attend the committee meeting will be given a specific 800 call-in number for this meeting, which will be a CCAOM conference call number. Here is the number:

Ø       Dial 1-866-352-3799;

Ø       At the operator’s prompt, enter the Meeting Number *8978346* (include the * key before and after number);

Ø       Ignore any operator’s prompt for Moderator’s Pin Number as I will execute that number at the beginning of the committee meeting.

Ø       If you dial-in a little too early, the operator will indicate that the call has not yet started because the moderator (i.e., me) has not yet joined the call. Just re-dial the 800 number again in a few minutes.

Ř       At the operator’s prompt, enter the Meeting Number *8978346* (include the * key before and after number);

Ř       Ignore any operator’s prompt for Moderator’s Pin Number as I will execute that number at the beginning of the committee meeting.

Ř       If you dial-in a little too early, the operator will indicate that the call has not yet started because the moderator (i.e., me) has not yet joined the call. Just re-dial the 800 number again in a few minutes.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the information.   April 8 at 8 am may be impossible for me, as I am in a class at that time.

How much will the telephone call cost?

Jim:

Would you please let your committee members know via the CCAOM Libraries Yahoo domain that there will be a speaker phone in the Libraries committee meeting room in Albuquerque. The committee will meet on Thursday, April 8, from 9 am – 12 noon (Mountain time) [thus, the meeting will begin in other time zones as follows: 8 am Pacific time, 10 am Central, and 11 am Eastern].

I will be present in the room at the beginning of the meeting to facilitate access to CCAOM's conference call number so that everyone in the room (through the speaker phone device) and AOM librarians at CCAOM colleges elsewhere who are not able to attend the meeting can be virtually present. I will also be in the room at the end of the meeting to facilitate the disconnect from the line as CCAOM will be billed for a 3-hour conference call with a charge per each outside participant on the call…this will not be inexpensive…but we do want to try to facilitate the virtual presence of AOM librarians as this is an important committee with important work. If you end the meeting before the allotted time (i.e., before 12 noon Central time), please contact me by cell (number to be provided) so that I can ensure prompt disconnect from the call.

Thanks for posting this notice, Jim

This year's Symposium for Portland Area Research in CAM (SPARC) will be on
Saturday April 17, 2010, focused on Research in Clinical Practice. There will
be an afternoon breakout to explore effective collaborations of administration
and librarians in the education and implementation of evidence-informed
practice. As a pre-conference on Friday April 16th we are doing an afternoon
program on CAM research methodology and teaching strategies--designed
specifically for librarians. It is entitled "Librarians as Leaders in Evidence
Informed Practice". Heather Zwickey, PhD, will present an introduction to
methodological challenges to CAM research, Liz Sutherland, ND, will discuss CAM
outcome measures (i.e. is health the absence of symptoms?), and Adi Haramati,
MD, will discuss how librarians can help students and researcher who are new to
CAM reach the appropriate literature with different teaching strategies.

There will be both Portland area librarians and librarians from all of the CAM
R25 schools. There are a limited number of travel scholarships available to
librarians. Attached is the pre-conference flyer for your reference. Full
SPARC brochure can be easily accessed at helfgott.org.

LIBRARIES OF ACUPUNCTURE & ORIENTAL MEDICINE COMMITTEE
(Albuquerque * Thursday, April 8, 2010 * 9 am - 10:30)
Minutes
Chair: Jim Emdy

1. In attendance:
Claudia O'Neill, Sandra Lillie,ITEA; David York, AOMA; Vladimir DiBrigida,
CSTCM; Pat Bernarding, Daoist Tradition; Teri Powers, AIMC.
By telephone: Jen Hartman, NESA; Dan Kanaly, Chris Sheldon, Finger Lakes School,
NY; Della Schupe, Ann Kempf, NW Health…Duluth MN.
Thanks to support for the Council, a speaker phone system was made available to
expand the reach of the meeting. We hope this service can continue at future
meetings and it is probable that member libraries will help out in covering
costs.

2. Update on membership in subcommittees dedicated to specific library concerns.
Formation of a subcommittee to explore the possibility of a Consortium of OM
libraries to provide greater support and cooperation between members. This will
involve review of past comments (email in Yahoo group) and active exploration of
the consortium under the umbrella of CCAOM. Committee members are:
Teri Powers, AIMC, Dan Kanaly, Finger Lakes, David York, AOMA
Rick Severson has previously expressed interest in this committee but was not in
attendance.

3. Discussion of cooperation between LCAOM members and NLM PubMed search terms,
including news of cooperation between an institute in China and PubMed.
Western medical term sources do not adequately reflect the world of OM. The
National Medical Libraries are working with OM libraries to provide more
adequate terminology for search and categorization. A thesaurus already in
print may soon be available and there will be cooperation with an institution in
China on this topic. A subcommittee has been formed to facilitate this process:
Members are:
Jen Hartman, NESA, Ann Kempfe, NW Health.
Naomi Boering has already begun some work in this area and will be invited to
join this subcommittee. The LCAOM chair person offers to coordinate the overall
effort of these subcommittees.
The action taken on the above three items represent fulfillment of goals set at
the October 2009 meeting in Idaho. We hope to be able to report our progress in
these two areas at the next meeting.
4. OM libraries and PubMed, especially DocLine.
Searching the PubMed database from NML is free but sometimes only abstracts are
available. DocLine is an interlibrary loan and document exchange service to
which several OM libraries already belong. More OM libraries are urged to
become part of DocLine-it is relatively easy to join (an online interactive
tutorial is required), the service is basically free and staff of the West Coast
and Pacific division are very helpful.
The chair person will be sending in a separate email more details on carrying
out this process.
5. Presentation of printout of PowerPoint slides showing orientation to the Five
Branches Library for new students.
A PowerPoint slide show for orientation to library services and search
techniques was discussed. It was developed by students at the Five Branches
Library and is available for download and modification from the "files" section
of the Yahoo user group.
6. Evaluation of library adequacy and new information technologies.
A short paper on procedures for evaluating adequacy of library services was
discussed. The paper is in the "files" section under title "Evaluation.." Many
of the databases, including PubMed, MDConsult and LibraryWorld(internet library
data service used by Five Branches) are accessible from mobile devices such as
iPhones, Blackberries, etc. WiFi is now generally available for internet
connection. The NetLibrary ebook vender apparently has a good number of titles
relevant to OM. Ebooks may be useful as a source for textbook materials,
obviating the need for students to purchase as many hard copy books.
A matter brought up at the committee meeting but not mentioned in the Chair's
oral report at the general meeting on Friday concerned WiFi sensitivity. There
are claims that WiFi signals cause health problems for some individuals.
Perhaps this could be a research project for someone to pursue. The Chair will
be doing some investigation in this area.

Thanks to all who participated in our lively discussion, and special gratitude
to the Council for support of telephone connectivity.

Jim Emdy, Chair.

Sorry about that, it was sent as a PDF attachment at the end. I don't know why it didn't work. The title of the article (found in Medline PubMed) is:

An overview of 45 published database resources for complementary and alternative medicine.

I will try to send it again by going a different way.
