Hello everyone,

I’m the new librarian at OCOM in Portland and am looking into adding some new electronic resources. Have any of you ever used the Chinese Medicine Database (http://cm-db.com/)? What did you think?

Also what sort of paid electronic resources do you all subscribe to? Currently we have EBSCO databases, classicalchinesemedicine.org, HerbMedPro, and Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.

Thanks for your input and I hope to meet some of you in person soon!

Hi Lana,
Currently we subscribe to EBSCO Host databases which includes Alt HealthWatch, Medline with Full Text, and EJS online Elec journals in full text,  MedlinePlus,  Pub Med, Pub Med Central, Bio Med Central, Plos Medicine.  Re. Natural Medicines, you can find most of them in MedlinePlus in the Drugs section under Herbs and Supplements.

I looked as some Chinese Medicine databases around 2003 and most were in Chinese, not as suitable for our students.

I notice that the Chinese Medicine Database you mentioned began in 2006, so I will have to look at it.  also the classicchinesemedicine.org seems to be proprietary to a College.  Is this true?  What are the costs of these two databases?

Hi Naomi,

Thanks for the tip about Natural Medicine falling under MedlinePlus. Few of our students are using that resource anyway so it’s nice to know it won’t be gone if it gets cut.

You should contact the guy from cm-db.com directly for a quote, but he quoted me at the rate of $1 per student per month to offer 1 pass into the database, which is too expensive for us. I’ve spoken with other librarians who were unable to afford his price so maybe if a bunch of us approached him he’d be willing to offer a lower rate. Classicalchinesemedicine.org was created by Heiner Fruehauf at NCNM here in Portland but it is much more reasonable costing just $200 a year per login (we have 2).

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Jim,
For those of us who cannot attend, but responded to the survey, can you copy them and transmit to us in pdf format.  It would be easier to read the entireform on each page rather then this distribution.

Here are the minutes of the Library Committee of April 23rd, Sacramento meeting.

In attendance: Jim Emdy(Five Branches University) Chair; Lana Thelen, OCOM;
Scott Ahn, SCUSOMA; Shen Ping Liang, ACAOM.

1. Role of libraries in educating researchers in finding current awareness
resources: Several online tutorials from an email from Mark Seem will be added
to the OPAC catalog page of Five Branches University. Research literacy is a
foundation of competencies of an AOM graduate, and traditionally librarians have
a leading role in this effort.

2. A brief discussion on collection development was held. Materials from
previous meetings was made available for assistance in this matter.

3. We discussed briefly the possibility and usefulness of cooperation between
AOM schools in the United States and China.

4. Use of webcam/interactive video-audio connectivity for widening
participation for those who cannot attend the committee meetings in person was
discussed. Several attendees will do more research in this matter.

5. In regard to formation a consortium of AOM libraries, the results of a
recent survey of library shared resources and interest in forming a consortium
indicate a good number of institutions which are willing to share resources via
interlibrary loan. It was decided that as a first step toward formal chartering
of am AOM library consortium, the Yahoo usergroup listserv would be a vehicle to
place and fill ILL requests, with Five Branches University library maintaining
an online accessible database for tracking transactions. Some institutions will
begin the process by offering some material for ILL transactions. Sample
contracts and protocols in relation to ILL transactions will be submitted later.
The survey results will be sent as an attachment in a later email. If your
library has not responded to the survey, please do so.

Thanks Jim, One comment.
There is a Natioanl Network for interlibrary loans already called DOCLine.  I do not understand why we need to set up our own.

It is early in terms of the Idaho fall meeting but I thought I would put out
some suggestions for agenda for the meeting.

Here is a comment from David Sales:
Just wanted to remind that at the Council's general business meeting in
Sacramento, the Libraries Committee was asked to put on its fall meeting agenda
in Idaho the issue of "information literacy." The discussion at the general
business meeting noted that "information literacy" is one of the Institute of
Medicine's core competencies and is included in ACAOM's draft of the
re-conceptualized Master's Degree standards. It was further stated at the
meeting that the colleges ought to have workshops concerning information
literacy and that it takes time to build such literacy across a curriculum.
Perhaps the Libraries Committee can make a recommendation in this subject area
at the Idaho meeting.

research and literature competency has been briefly touched on in the past, for
example, the Fall 2008 meeting. I think for our next meeting it should be a
major focus. I will be consulting with David about what procedures should be
pursued to further integrate libraries in the general discussion of literacy
competency, especially in view of DAOM programs.

Please share any thoughts you have on this issue.

thanks

Subject: Thesaurus for cataloging TCM materials

Hello all,

When cataloging materials for your libraries, do you use a thesaurus that is TCM-specific?  For example, I am doing original cataloging of a book about collateral disease theory, and I find that both LC and MeSH headings fall woefully short of truly expressing the content of this book to our users.  Other examples of when a TCM thesaurus would come in handy is when cataloging materials about five element acupuncture (or other styles/theories of practice) or certain needling techniques.

Or, alternately, is there a TCM-specific thesaurus that is used for indexing?  When cataloging chiropractic materials for my library or indexing for the Index to Chiropractic Literature, I use the Chiropractic Subject Headings, which is an LC-approved thesaurus for these purposes.  I checked http://www.loc.gov/marc/relators/relasour.html#rela655b to see if there is a similar resource for Chinese medicine, but didn't find one listed on this page.

And if there isn't a thesaurus for TCM materials, what do you do when adding subject headings for the more unique items?  Our catalog is getting pretty full of the bland LC and MeSH offerings, such as "Medicine, Chinese," "Acupuncture," etc.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Ann,
I agree that the LC and MESH headings are often not useful for TCM.
Sometimes, I go to OCLC to see if the item has been previously cataloged. Or, I go to a Chinese University to see if I can copy catalog.  University of Hong Kong ot Taiwan are possible sites.

Regarding Original cataloging, If I believe the subject is important  I will enter it myself and then it is search able under subject or keyword.
Another possibility is to put in MARC data Tag 505 contents.  Then it is search able by Keyword.

Regarding a Thesaurus, There are some books that we could consider using as an index, something like the Materia Medica for herbs.
Maybe we should explore developing a thesaurus.
