Rodb, where are you located? Sounds like you're from
my old area. Unfortunately, there are a lot of
smart-alek kids on the radio who refer to anyone new
as a "mud duck." Try tuning your SWR, and that will
unlock the full potential of your radio. There are
many websites that can explain it for you if you need.

Mr. Movin,

Pay no attention to the knuckleheads that try to intimidate you. There
are plenty of them out there. This is a fact that will not change.
Being a member of a CB club will not change them, but will certainly
give you the feeling of having a "family" within the CB realm, I
recommend it. The biggest thing you can do for your station is to add
a quality microphone. Radios that sound good, get respect. Sound like
a pro, and folks will always want to know what equipment you are using.
As for being called a "mud-duck", you're in good company. I think
most of us have had that one laid on us. Especially from the stations
that wish they sounded as good.

I look forward to hearing you on the air. Where are you located?

Cronus,

Well, I'm sure this reply comes unexpectedly as it's been two months
since you posted your question.

I do have a few comments about the antenna questions you pose. I have
used an A-99 with the GPK for a few years and am happy with it's
performance. If I was in the market to purchase a new antenna,
however, I would likely ante up for the Maco. I've used a 5/8 wave
antenna in the past (a loaner) and was very happy with it's
performance. With any vertical antenna, I suggest a ground plane kit
(GPK). I even use one on the Wilson 1000 antenna mounted on the front
corner of my pickup truck. The kits really enhance reception. Maco
without GPK .vs. A-99 with GPK? use the A-99.

Now about beam antennas. I use a 4 element horizontal Cushcraft.
Since I enjoy DX alot this if fine for me as I can switch to the
vertical when shifting to the local talk-about. There is one problem
with this setup, though. When wishing to make a contact with someone
just beyond arms length that is using a vertical antenna it helps to
have a vertical beam as well. The vertical beam also proves invaluable
when conditions get "rough and tough" as we all know they can get. My
vote is for the antenna that gives you both H and V. Try looking
around for a used Avanti Moonraker antenna. They give true V and H
polarization as opposed to the "somewhere in-between" of the Y type
antennas. Currently my vote for the top performer on the market today
is constructed by a fellow in Wyoming. If you want to be able to get
the signal out there and don't mind ponying up the dough, get in touch
with the folks at skykingtops@....

Well, Cronus, did I carry on too much? I hope this is the stuff you've
been looking for. Hope to "see you on the air" sometime soon.
