One thing the federal government (Bush or Obama) could do with the stroke of a
pen is to restore the 55 mph limit on interstates. That one, simple measure
alone would save millions of gallons of fuel, both gas and diesel, that we
wouldn't have to buy from the Arabs.

There couldn't be a more effective way to fight terrorism and save American
lives, both military overseas and civilian here at home in horrendous collisions
on our high-speed interstates. Washington cut the limit back in the 70's but
allowed speeds to rise as oil supplies returned. Not too smart.

The interstates were engineered for 55 mph, so why has Washington allowed 70
mph? It just invites the thousands of fatalities that we rack up each year by
'over-driving' these roads that were never designed for such high speeds.
