Unfortunately, Daniel, people don't understand that linear amps are only part of
the problem. On AM, talking skip on Emergency Channel 9 (as some do) with or
without a linear can endanger lives. The same applies to a lesser extent on
other channels since emergency comms take priority on any channel.

If I can hear you from hundreds of miles away, emergency calls from your area
are travelling similar distances. At the same time, REACT or other monitors in
your own area may be unable to hear those distress calls at all. It is just the
crazy way skip works. That is why the regs in both Canada and the U.S. prohibit
working it. When people disregard that, they place others' lives at risk. The
reg is there to protect your family's safety and mine, not to spoil anyone's
fun.

To cite an example, one night two REACT volunteers and a police officer here all
tried in vain to reach a local caller on Emergency Channel 9. They could hear
each other, but none was able to contact the emergency caller. Monitors hundreds
of miles away may have been able to hear him but since he was broadcasting no
vital details (Where exactly; What; Who) they would not have been able to assist
him either. It is critically important to air those details repeatedly.

I imagine 'road racing' is a problem in your area as it has become in mine. It
is the equivalent of talking skip on CB, certainly on AM, and it has cost
numerous lives here. They disobey speed limits and others pay the consequences;
we disobey radio regs and others pay the consequences.

I can't speak with authority on SSB effects since I don't have it. Others can do
that better. It does seem to me that emergency comms at my station have been
affected by SSB since I was unable to decipher the interfering speech, but I
could be wrong. In any event, talking skip can mean deadly consequences for
people needing emergency help. I hope this explains it a little better since it
really is so dangerous to others.
