Hello All...I am new to this group. My handle is Flipper/683 and I am
in Ontario, Canada. I have a radio that is making me scratch my head!
It is a Midland 79-290. It has an LCD signal meter which as long as
there is an antenna hooked up to it, it displays (I am assuming) the
noise floor at +S9 or more! When someone transmits out there, the
meter then goes to display the signal strength of that signal even if
the signal is less than +S9!!! The noise floor theory has been
verified by an Icom IC-718. It doesn't show quite as much noise floor
(about S7) but I am thinking that that is just a difference in the
meter's sensitivity. I think that the noise is pulse type noise
because the noise sounds like 60Hz buzzing on the Icom. ANY Ideas out
there???

Update...The noise goes away completely when I short the ground counterpoise wire to the antenna. The noise goes down to S3 when I detach the ground...
