When I was managing my registry I worked out an hourly fee with our Cancer
Center administrator. We accessioned approximately 2,000 cases per year, and
at that time had a reference date of 1940, 6+ full time staff members, and
also managed and coordinated 9 disease-site specific tumor boards on a weekly to
monthly basis. The administrator LOVED the idea when he realized that we
could recover, even a small portion, of the resources expended. We, in
particularly, did a huge number of studies and reports for physicians who were
gathering stats for potential clinical trial studies (the same studies, by the
way, that put money into funds that they coudl spend without any discretionary
oversight - and, of course, the Registry never saw a dime of that!)
Anyway, we arrived at a per hour figure of what consultants were
traditionally paid. At that time we were working with a CTR consulting company
who
charged $55 per hour, plus expenses (and used that contract to show "usual" and
"normal" fees for for our business). Ultimately we knew we could really
charge about $75-$95 per hour but decided on the $55 so we would have less
negative response. I made arrangements then with our Accounting department to
internally charge the internal departments back for these fees, etc.
The real trick is to get these funds back into accounts that can be
controlled by the Registry. I then used that as educational / travel money for
my
staff of 6+.
Good luck and hope this helps!
