Re: Leiomyosarcoma of Breast

Hi Lori . . . Here's my two cents. Don't use the staging guide to
code the primary site, tempting though it is. Those eligible
histology lists at the start of chapters only mean those are the
histologies which may be staged with that site's staging schema - not
that others can't happen in that site.
Lacking an ICD-O rule, I'd talk with the pathologist, if their report
doesn't make it clear, and ask if the tumor did or did not arise in
chest wall connective tissue. If they waffle, ask the surgeon if
they consider this to be a breast primary or a primary of chest wall
connective tissue. No matter how you go, this case will be an odd
fit!

Leiomyosarcoma falls under the chapter on soft tissue so therefore you would code this to soft tissue and not to the breast. Check the cancer staging manual...

Hey Lori, Looks like you got two different answers to your question - I posted mine on the ncra website-I felt that the staging manual inferred that you use...

I would code this site to the breast if I were doing it. The same rule applies if you were coding a lymphoma of the stomach. You would code it to the stomach...
