Today I surprised myself. I ran a 5K (3.1 mile) race in the cold and
icy conditions. I completed the run with a 200 meter sprint passing a
threesome who had been 10 meters in front of me for 10 minutes. My
time came to less than 9 minutes per mile. That is great because I
haven't been doing a lot of training over the past two months and the
conditions were not ideal.
Shalom,
Chuck
Greetings, all, from north central Texas! We're settled in here at
Lake Mineral Wells State Park, about 40 miles northwest of Ft.
Worth, for the winter. We're volunteering again...you know us! Dan
will be writing and giving interpretive programs to our visitors,
and I will be first learning and then writing a training manual for
the computerized reservation system that they use here. This
program is used by national and state parks throughout the country,
so I'm very excited to be involved in it. Yet another skill to add
to our volunteer resumes.
This spring, when we leave here, we hope to visit the four remaining
states that we have not been to in this great country of ours on our
way to our next assignment in Seward, Alaska! We also promised the
family that we will be home for Christmas 2006 so we will make a
stop in San Diego, probably sometime in November through the
holidays. We did not promise them we would stay. So the adventure
continues.
Many of you know that we were involved in a pretty serious car
accident in Houston last month when we came off our cruise. We are
both doing well, fortunate that our injuries were minor, though
lingering. We're finally beginning to feel better, though not
100%. We don't know when our beautiful new car will be repaired.
The Honda dealer in Houston that is doing the repairs let us know
last week that there is additional damage past their first estimate,
so we're just waiting. It's been three weeks now and may be another
three or four til all the parts are in and the paint dried. We can
only hope the young man who was taken to the hospital has recovered
and the young lady who was driving is okay and that her pregnancy
continues without problem.
A bit of news for those of you who may not be aware of it: Our
friend Evelyn Katerba is celebrating a birthday this New Year's
Eve. I'm sure she'd welcome your birthday wishes.
Lastly, I hope that 2006 brings you all a year of health, happiness
and that your dreams are fulfilled.
Thanks for catching that. .. I couldn't remember what her real name is. . . All I ever saw was Stuff, as her sign off. Thinking about ya. . . big guy. Sending the best to ya.
Hi Chuck, I was just looking at the website. Just something I
noticed. In the pictures there are a couple of them mis-marked. The
sultry looking blonde with the long hair is Stuff - not Nancy. I don't
recall what her "real" name is . . . she always signed her notes with
the nick name Stuff and everyone knew her by "Stuff". Don't want to
confuse matters. You're doing a great job. Hope you have a great
holiday. Thanks for the joy and peace your gifts bring to us.
The next time you enter the Cancer Survivors Gathering Place Web site
it will be in a different place. I moved it both because Adelphia has
been taken over by Comcast and there were problems with updating pages.
If anyone finds something broken please let me know so I can fix it.
Shalom,
Chuck
P.S. I updated the remembrances to include Judy. I will work on adding
Theresa next.
Nancy, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. You know all the things
that I would say to you about your mom's passing; it's very difficult
to loose a parent, not only because of the love and life that you have
shared, but because you are now the oldest generation. I was quite
young when I lost my mother, but I remember the feeling when my father
died....in addition to the grief I felt was the scary recognition that
my generation will be the next to leave. Perhaps that helps us fight
harder, I don't know.
Anyway, my friend, stay strong and keep on doing what you have to do
for you. You're in my prayers.
Love,
Marla
p.s. where in New York are you? We're thinking that if we have the
time when we leave Texas we'll be heading your way. New York and New
Jersey are two of the four states we have not visited in this great
country of ours. If we have time before we're due in Alaska for the
summer, and if the weather cooperates, we'll head east and north and
then across Canada on our way.

To Nancy . .. my prayers are with you . .. I do indeed remember meeting your dear mother. She was so sweet and so very proud of you. . . My thoughts are with you. . . dear friend.
Jim and Judy will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry to hear
of Judy's passing. Unfortunately, I have some sad news too. My
mother,Theresa (some of you met her at the N.J. reunion), passed away
on Nov. 15. Her long fight with colon cancer finally got the best of
her. I'm still kind of in shock over that. It's a sad time, but at
least they both passed peacefully and are no longer sick or in pain.
Love, Nancy
Survivors,
If anyone has anything to add to the memorial for Judy that I will be
placing on the Web site please send it to me or post it on the message
board at:

Evie,
I definitely will add Judy to the memorial page. I never met her
personally. I came to know her from pictures and the memories of
others who knew her well.
Who is Margaret McCulloch?
Shalom,
Chuck
Evie,
I am so, so sorry to hear about Judy's death. Chuck and I were just
talking about Jim and Judy a couple of days ago and wondering how they
were doing. What a sad way to get the answer!

Just got an email from our friend and founder of this website Jim
McCulloch sharing the sad news of his dear wife, Judy's passing. She
will be missed. Both she and Jim brought light out of the darkness
that their battle with cancer had taught them. Long before the
internet had taken shape with its far reaching opportunities of
communication that were only a dream a few years before, Jim sent an
email, entitled "Special Day" that helped challenge and encourage
anyone who read it and by so doing gave a hand up to those of us who
were battling the monster cancer ourselves. I came to know heroes and
heroines that inspired and challenged the journey toward healing with
education, friendship and support that was unequaled. I just wanted to
say thank you Judy. . . thank you Jim, for your gift of light, for
helping me find my way out of the darkness of fear and the unknown.
Thank you for bringing these heroes and heroines into my life that I
now call friends. Please know we are all here for you. With love and
prayers. . . Evie. . . Evelyn Katerba in NJ
Two weeks ago I ran a 5 mile race in the pelting rain. There were 500
people entered in the race, but only 76 showed up. Prizes went to the
top 3 finishers and the top 3 in each age group. I finished just
behind a woman my age. She finished 3rd of 3 in her age group.
Unfortunately for me there were 10 men in my age group and I finished
10th - no prize. Still it was my best race so far this year and I feel
pretty good about where I placed. Only the really serious runners
bothered to show up while most everyone simply stayed in bed. A half
mile causeway across a reservoir that we ran on is now under 20 feet
of water. I feel sort of like we ran across the Red Sea that was
parted for us.
Tomorrow I expect to run another 5 mile race in the snow. I am quite
nervous and Jackie would prefer I stay home.
Shalom,
Chuck
Glad to hear you're doing well.....just know that it will continue to work
and all will be well.

Thanks for your concern. This "leukemia thing" is a lifetime worry. I am
on oral treatment. So far the disease has been reduced to extremely low
levels, but it doesn't go away. We're not told we're in remission, we're
in
"response". That's because the disease will come back if those of us on
the drug
quit taking it. There are other drugs in trial that may even be better,
but
for now I'm grateful to be stable. I feel fine with only a few side
effects.
I can work fulltime and none of my coworkers even knows. There are cases
where patients lose their response to the drug. That's where the worry
comes
in. I try not to think about that. So far, I'm well and plan to keep it
that way.
Thanks for asking!!
Nancy

This discussion group is the same as the old one at this time. Anyone
who finds it can post and read messages. In addition, anyone can
become a member and receive email either individual or daily digest.
As the owner and moderator of the discussion group I can change it to
require potential members to apply for membership and I can make the
messages private to members only. I can even give myself the necessity
of approving all messages before they are posted to the membership.
I am open to suggestions on how to configure the discussion group.
Have fun with your puppy. I had a puppy once, but I had to give it
back to my mother.
Shalom,
Chuck
Hey, Nancy, how are you doing? Did you put that Leukemia thing away, or are
you still battling that one? I've been thinking about you a lot lately.
Take care....

Hi!
I just checked the website and found out we have a new discussion
site. Thanks for keeping things going Chuck.
It's so nice to see some of the familiar names still posting. I hope
everyone is well.
I'm pretty good. I am still teaching first grade. The first two
weeks of school have been tiring due to the extreme heat we've had
this year. Other than that, I'm doing fine.
I've been busy all summer with a new "baby". I have a new puppy! I
have a little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is the dearest little
sweetheart! We are in "puppy kindergarten" together!
I'll check back. One question: Chuck, is this discussion group
readable only to members, or can anyone read what we post on the
internet?
Thanks, Nancy

Nice try, Chuck. But I found you anyway! <G>
Hope you all are doing well, getting on with getting on. To the
oldtimers (and others, if you wish), please check the message I
posted last night on the old board.....after our visit to Riverwalk
in San Antonio.
I'll drop in from time to time, as our travel schedule allows. We
just accepted a job in Alaska for summer of 2006, so we're now
booked through Sept. 30, 2006. I'm sure that I will 'see' Peg B. in
my mind's eye as we travel through that great state.
Heading now to a camphost spot in Sabine Pass, Tex on the Gulf and
the Louisiana border....unless Hurricane Rita changes that plan. But
we know she won't. I think she'll dissipate over the Gulf. Hope
the Keys aren't too badly damaged....we loved Kay West and Key
Largo. And conch soup, omigod is that good!
Those of you just starting on your survival journey, know that
there's truly a life after cancer....and it is what you make it!
Set some goals -- they'll help you get through this time. Visualize
yourself accomplishing them. You will.
Just very busy visiting with our son last week. It's really great to
have him living close enough so he can come visit us now.
How's everyone doing?
Hugs,
Jackie
Chuck, still trying to figure out out to post here; will keep
checking
it out. Don't want to leave you all alone here. VBG Thanks for the
E-
mail for the Site addy. Good to see Evie here. Bets

To All Survivors,
This will be the new discussion board for messages. You are invited to
join the Yahoo Group, but it isn't necessary to read, reply, and post
messages.
If you join you may choose to get each new message emailed to you daily
or you may choose to get a daily compilation of all new messages for
that day or you may choose to come to the web site and read new messages.
All messages are archived and you may read them whenever you feel like it.
Shalom,
Chuck
