The Wolf Pack is a group of people who are important to me and when I went through the cancer stuff nearly 15 years ago, I rallied them to help me get well....I chose the wolf as my symbol because he was nearly extinct and making a strong comeback in the wild...something I planned to do (and did!).
I need to call on you all again for a different fight. I'm writing this from my hospital bed in San Diego, where I have been since Friday. A week ago, while stil in Mineral Wells, TEX, I visited the emergency room of the local hospital as a result of a bad cough that lingered for about five weeks. They advised me that my problem was not the cough...it was the major symptom. along with weakness, of congestive heart failure. Dan packed up the rig and we arrived in San Diego Thursday night, straight to the emergency room and I have been here ever since.
What they have found out so far: when I arrived I had fluid everywhere -- I had not seen bones in my feet and ankles for nearly a week. They put me on IV Lasic and I have lost nearly 25 pounds as a result. The CTscan they did at 3:30 Friday morning showed a lot of fluid around my heart. The echocardiogram indicated that I'm only pumping at about 35% of capacity...not enough to keep fluids from building up. The cardiolpgist is due in today and we'll find out more. They are trying to determine what caused this. The choices seem to be the leaking mitral valve or a virus (which I had while in Texas).
If the cause is determined to be the mitral valve, I'll probably be looking at surgery to repair or replace it. Hopefully we will know lots more in the next few days.
So once again, I'm asking for your positive thoughts, prayers, whatever it is that you did with the cancer to get me through it. It's a very scary time (you know how I hate to feel vulnerable) and I'm relying on you all to get me through this.
I have a phone here in my room : 619/228-0651 11 if you want to call; don't know the address here at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, but Dan got our PO box open and working if you want to drop a note, send a funny or whatever. It's P.O. Box 461, Lakeside CA 92040.
Now, after I send this, I"ll start reading the more that 200 emails that have backed up since this got so ugly....I'm sure there will be lots of grins and giggles there.
Love,
Marla
Marla B. Pence Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming --- Wow! What a ride!!!!!
