I don't know where in NH your dad lives or where he expects to be
treated. Based on my experience, one of the Boston hospitals is likely
to be best for treatment. My surgical team for the esophagectomy was
from Brigham & Women's hospital (headed by Dr. Chang) because the VAMC
doesn't have staff with the experience to perform surgeries that
difficult (up to 14 hours).
Chemo treatments may help in treating metastatic esophageal cancer.
Combinations of surgery and radiation seem to be more common depending
on the extent of the spread. Excellent radiation is available at
several centers in NH as is chemo.
If your dad requires transportation the American Cancer Society has a
Road-To-Recovery program (1-800-227-2345) that may be able to
transport him to his treatments (even to Boston). There are also
numerous agencies in Boston that provide housing for patients and
families during Cancer treatments.
