Re: Cherie Blair Tour   Message List

Thankyou for your response which clearly indicates that:

-all money collected on the evening will be received by the charity
-the charity itself will not be paying Cherie Blair/Booth any fee

What remains unclear is whether Cherie Blair/Booth is taking a fee from the event management company - indeed articles in the Australian press indicate that there are contractual arrangements between her and the management company that prevent them from disclosing her fee!

We all appreciate the urgent and important needs of cancer charities - and when young children are involved (either directly as cancer patients, or indirectly when a parent is afflicted) our hearts go out to them. Accordingly we would wish fundraising events to be successful and the rewards to be used both for alleviation of suffering and the advancement of knowledge and the development of cures.  However when apparently 75% of takings are to be used to pay event managers and speaker fees the question does arise: who are the main beneficiaries of what is supposed to be a 'Charitable' event?

I do hope that a prompt clarification will confirm that Cherie Blair/Booth is not taking any fee or other personal benefit from the event management company. I am sure that prompt and unambiguous clarification would help facilitate a greater success of the event.

Love and Healing to all in your care

Ian

PS If Cherie Booth is contractually entitled to a fee (allegedly £100,000 or AUS $ 250,000) from the event managers, it would be a commendable act for her now to publicly state that she will donate any such sum to the charity itself as a part of the evening's takings.

Subject: Cherie Blair Tour

Thank you for your correspondence regarding the fundraising tour of Cherie Blair for Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA). We regret that you have been affronted by some of the media reports about the tour.

As a not-for-profit medical research institute which relies heavily on public fundraising, we are dependent on professional companies and speakers to assist with our activities.

In the case of the Cherie Blair events, I can assure you that we are not spending a cent of money given to us by our donors and supporters. The event management company is assuming the entire cost of putting on these events and we will receive the profits of the Cherie Blair events. In addition, money donated to the Institute on the night, will not be used to cover any expenses of the event and will be 100% tax deductible for the donor.

We were delighted that the event management company was able to secure the involvement of a woman of her stature. Her work as the patron of numerous charities, including cancer charities, has great relevance for our marketing activities.

I can assure you that we are an honourable charity and value and respect the contributions of our donors and supporters. We work tirelessly towards a vision of one day curing childhood cancer, with the outcomes of our medical research benefiting patients in clinical centres located throughout Australia and overseas. I would be happy to provide you with additional information you may require about our research work.

Whilst I appreciate your concerns, this story has originated and is being perpetuated by the media to the detriment of our fundraising efforts. I trust this provides a satisfactory response to your queries and that you will continue to support CCIA in the future.

Kind regards

Susan Bogle
