Flaxseeds May Help Fight Breast Cancer
Something that many people probably have in their medicine cabinets
may actually slow the growth of breast cancer cells in women.
According to a NewsChannel5 On Your Side health report, flaxseeds can
help women fight cancer.
A Toronto doctor said that according to his research, flax can
significantly cut the rate of breast cancer cell growth.
"The scientific community is very interested in this study," Dr. Paul
Goss said. "We've been bombarded by other investigators from around
the world."
Goss and a team at the University of Toronto asked a group of newly
diagnosed breast cancer patients to eat two tablespoons of ground
flaxseed in a muffin each day.
They then analyzed samples of the patients' tumors before starting
the nutritional tr! eatment, as well as samples from 30 days after.
The researchers found that in less than a month, the women taking
flaxseed slowed their rate of cancer cell growth by up to 33 percent
compared to women not taking flax.
In addition, there was nearly a 60 percent drop in the spread of the
most aggressive cancer cells.
The nutritional treatment's effect was equal to anti-cancer drugs
such as tamoxifen, WEWS reports.
"Flaxseed is the first nutritional product that's been studied that's
actually produced hard, scientific evidence," Goss said.
Researchers believe that a fiber in the seeds helps to sweep the
hormone estrogen out of the body, blocking its ability to make tumors
grow.
But because flaxseed is a food and doesn't have the backing of a drug
company, researchers wonder if they'll be able to continue looking
into whether the seeds may help to prevent breast cancer in the first
place.
Cancer support gro! ups, however, think that the intriguing data
won't be ignored.
"There is a community out there who (is) hungry for this kind of
information, and it won't bother them that it's not a pharmaceutical;
in fact, it might even encourage them," Sue Wright of the Breast
Cancer (news - web sites) Support Centre said.
In fact, women have been eager to join other ongoing studies of flax.
"It has no side effects whatsoever, and I feel great," one patient
said.
The researchers said that they are excited at the possibility that
they have opened a door to a cancer treatment that is something other
than a chemical, WEWS reports.
