STAR-BANNER FILE
Andrew Allred

Andrew Allred, the man accused of killing West Port High School
graduate Tiffany Barwick, pleaded guilty to all charges, including two
counts of first-degree murder, during a court hearing Wednesday
afternoon at the Seminole County Jail.

Allred is charged in the killings of Barwick, 19, and her friend,
Michael Ruschak. They were killed Sept. 24, 2007 at a house in
Seminole County. Allred and Barwick had dated at one time.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Allred, 21. The
other option is life without parole. There will be a sentencing
hearing at a later date.

The Barwick family was not in court Wednesday, but members of the
Ruschak family were on hand. Assistant State Attorney Stewart Stone
said they were pleased and relieved they don't have to go through the
stress of a trial.

Coincidentally, in Tallahassee on Wednesday the Senate unanimously
approved a bill that would strengthen law officers' ability to handle
domestic violence cases. The law is named after Barwick and Ruschak.

SEPT. 24, 2007

Authorities say that, shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 24, 2007,
Allred slammed his Dodge Ram pickup into Barwick's car, which was
parked outside of Ruschak's rented house in Oviedo.

He broke in through the sliding glass door at the back of the house
and shot Ruschak four time in the chest and back, prosecutors allege.

Allred purchased a handgun on Sept. 1, less than a week after his
birthday, when Barwick broke up with him, records show.

Ruschak's roommate, Eric Roberts, tried to stop Allred on Sept. 24.
Roberts grabbed Allred from behind and pulled him back toward the
living room. Allred repeatedly told Roberts to let him go. He finally
pointed the gun down and shot Roberts in the leg, according to reports.

Police say Allred found Barwick hiding in one of the bathrooms of the
home. She was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher. She cried, pleaded
and screamed while Allred pointed the handgun at her, according to a
summary of the 911 call that authorities prepared. She said she didn't
want to die.

Allred shot her at least seven times in the chest, wrist and legs,
prosecutors say.

OMINOUS WARNINGS

Allred became suspicious of Barwick's relationship with Ruschak and
began sending harassing messages to her, authorities say. He hacked
into her online social networking sites and sent offensive messages to
her friends as if they were coming from Barwick.

He sent an e-mail to her that featured her picture full of bullet
holes. The title of the e-mail was "target," authorities say.

On the morning of Sept. 24, a Monday, Allred hacked into Barwick's
Bank of America account and took money out of her checking and savings
accounts and paid her credit card, according to police reports.

Authorities say Allred then sent an e-mail to everyone in her address
book. The e-mail contained instant message conversations between
Barwick and Ruschak. It is not clear whether the messages were
original or fabricated.

Records showed that Barwick made 911 calls saying Allred had access to
her accounts and was being very threatening toward her via e-mail and
instant messaging. "Victim is crying throughout the phone call," the
911 summary shows.

Barwick went to a Seminole County sheriff's deputy before noon Sept.
24 to report Allred.

"Andrew Allred purchased a hand gun very few days after the break up,"
she wrote in her report, putting two small stars at the beginning and
end of the sentence. "More threatening e-mails have been received,
wishing harm to me, my family and friends," she wrote.

Allred quit his job Sept. 24.

That evening, Barwick, Ruschak and a few other friends gathered at
Ruschak's place for barbecue. It was after 10:20 p.m. that Barwick
warned everyone that Allred said he was coming over, according to what
the friends later told police.

She wanted to call the police, but while friends were debating what to
do, they heard a loud bang.

That's when the 911 calls began from inside and outside the residence.

Allred was arrested by Oviedo police roughly an hour after the shooting.

LAPORTE, Ind. April 27, 2008 (AP)

Asle Helgelien didn't believe Belle Gunness' claims that his brother,
missing for months after answering the widow's lonely hearts ad, had
left her northern Indiana farm for Chicago or maybe their native Norway.

Suspicious after a bank said his brother, Andrew, had cashed a $3,000
check — a large sum in 1908 — the South Dakota farmer came to LaPorte
and discovered his brother's remains in a pit of household waste.

A century later, modern forensic scientists hope to solve once and for
all what appears to have been a web of multiple murders, deceit, sex
and money orchestrated by a woman dubbed Lady Bluebeard, after the
fairy tale character who killed multiple wives and left their bodies
in his castle.

Many locals believed Gunness staged her death in a farmhouse fire, 100
years ago Monday, before Asle Helgelien's arrival to cover up years
spent poisoning and dismembering more than two dozen people.

ABCNews By Kristi Piehl

Chris Jenkins was a popular student at the University of Minnesota who
disappeared one night in 2003.

Four months later, he was found dead in the Mississippi River. At
first police thought Jenkins was just a drunk college kid who
accidentally fell into the river and drowned after a night on the town.

But for two retired New York City Police detectives, Jenkins' death
became the link that connected the drowning deaths of 40 young men --
usually high-achieving college students -- in 25 cities in 11
different states.

Chilling discovery

Detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte have been tracking the
suspicious drowning deaths of young men across the country ever since
they investigated the death of college student Patrick McNeill, who
drowned in New York City in 1997. Gannon made a promise to McNeill's
parents that he would never give up on his case.

When the detectives took a look at Jenkins' death, they discovered
that the position of his body and other physical evidence proved that
the college student didn't drown accidentally. The cause of death on
Jenkins' death certificate was changed to "homicide."

While most local investigations focus on where a body was recovered,
Gannon and Duarte wanted to know where the body went into the water.
If they could figure out that location, the detectives believed they'd
be able to gather evidence from the actual crime scene.

In city after city, the detectives found a smiley face painted
somewhere at the crime scene. The color of paint used and the size of
the faces varies, but the detectives are convinced it is a sick
signature claiming responsibility for the homicide.

The detectives found the smiley faces in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana,
Wisconsin and Iowa.

Gannon and Duarte also came to the surprising conclusion that more
than one person is involved in the murders. "Because there's such a
wide range of states the killings are through," Gannon said Monday in
an exclusive interview on "Good Morning America." "Besides the fact
that we have multiple victims on the same night."

At the crime scene of a drowning in Michigan, Gannon and Duarte
discovered grafitti that they believed was written by the killers, but
were puzzled by a word they hadn't seen before.

"We found 'sinsiniwa,' which was very suspicious at the time," said
Gannon.

Then the detectives found the strange word in Iowa, where they were
investigating the drowning death of 24-year-old Matt Kruziki.

Bloodhounds tracked Kruziki's scent to an intersection near the
Mississippi River. The detectives believe that is the location where
the killers slid Kruziki's body in the water -- it was at Sinsiniwa
Avenue.

"We believe they were specifically leaving a clue for us or anyone who
was paying attention to these drownings, that the cases were
ultimately linked," Gannon said.

Paul McCabe of the FBI office in Minneapolis said the bureau
investigated some of the deaths late last year and concluded that they
were accidental drownings. He said an FBI behavioral analysis,
requested by a Wisconsin police chief, concluded that there was
probably not a serial killer at work.

McCabe said his office is not actively investigating any of the deaths
but would be interested in seeing any new information that Gannon and
Duarte had discovered.

Gannon said they were publicizing their conclusions now because they
are looking for help.

"Right now really we're out of finances and really can't do any more
on the cases. In fact, we looked at 89 cases in totality. We knocked
out 30 right away and there was 19 cases that we haven't even done yet
and out of those 19, they look like at least 10, 15 of those could be
connected," Gannon said.

Chris Jenkins' mother, Jan, like the McNeills and other families, want
answers about how their son died.

"The people that murdered Chris have murdered before him and they've
also murdered people after him and those people are still at large,"
Jan Jenkins said.

Judges' rulings pave way for litigation, keep ex-cop's guns with state
police

By Erika Slife and Matthew Walberg | Tribune reporters
     April 18, 2008

Drew Peterson's legal team suffered defeats on two fronts Thursday,
when one judge named new executors to the estate of his third wife,
permitting her relatives to file a wrongful-death lawsuit against him,
and another judge declined to order the return of his 11 guns.

Will County Judge Carmen Goodman determined that the finding of the
most recent autopsy showing Kathleen Savio had been murdered in 2004
was enough reason for her estate to be reopened. The judge replaced
Peterson's uncle, James Carroll, as executor of the estate with
Savio's father, Henry, and sister, Anna Doman.

Henry Savio and Doman now have the power to file a wrongful-death suit
against Peterson, 54, the former Bolingbrook police sergeant who is a
suspect in his fourth wife's disappearance. Kathleen Savio was found
dead in March 2004 in the bathtub of her Bolingbrook home weeks before
their divorce settlement was finalized.

At the time, a coroner's jury ruled the death an accident, but
authorities decided to take another look after Stacy disappeared Oct.
28. In February, State's Atty. James Glasgow announced that a new
autopsy determined she had been murdered.

Peterson has not been charged in either case and maintains he is innocent.

John Kelly, a New York attorney representing the Savio family who was
the lawyer for Nicole Brown Simpson's family in the successful civil
suit against O.J. Simpson, said the wrongful-death case would be filed
within a couple of weeks.

Joel Brodsky, representing Peterson and Carroll, said he planned to
appeal Goodman's ruling. He argued in court that the Savios had two
years under the statute of limitations to challenge the probate
proceedings.

Attorneys for the Savio family argued their clients didn't have the
grounds to file a challenge because Savio's death had been ruled
accidental. And they didn't have the authority to proceed with a
wrongful-death lawsuit because they were not the executors.

At the coroner's inquest held in May 2004, Savio's sister, Susan,
testified Savio was terrified of Peterson and that he continuously
made threats against her. But Illinois State Police Special Agent
Herbert Hardy testified there did not appear to be anything criminal
about her death.

After Savio died, the couple's two sons, under Peterson's
guardianship, received $1 million from a life-insurance payment,
according to court records. Peterson later received proceeds from
other insurance policies, profits from the sale of a bar the couple
owned in Montgomery and profits on the sale of their home, all valued
at more than $600,000, records showed.

On Thursday, at Brodsky's request, Goodman appointed an attorney, to
represent the couple's two children, now 13 and 15. Joliet attorney
Chrystel Gavlin will act on behalf of the children's interests,
Brodsky said.

The Savio family has said it is not seeking money from the estate but
simply wants Savio's sons to get whatever money they are entitled to.

"We're ecstatic," she said. "I mean we had every confidence in the
world. . . . Things are going well. We want to get the kids back
everything they need, that was rightfully theirs."

Later in the afternoon, another judge blocked Peterson's efforts to
force state police to return his eight long guns and three handguns.

Brodsky filed a motion in December seeking the return of Peterson's
firearms, vehicles and other items taken through a series of search
warrants. In February, Judge Richard Schoenstedt ordered the return of
all the items, including the firearms—provided Peterson had a valid
Firearm Owners Identification Card.

After the order, state police revoked his card. This month Brodsky
suggested the weapons be placed in the custody of Peterson's adult
son, Stephen, an Oak Brook police officer.

But Thursday, with Stephen Peterson in the gallery, Schoenstedt said
Peterson's reasons for wanting his weapons returned were not
compelling enough to override the right of police to hold potential
evidence in a criminal investigation.

As temperatures climb with the promise of spring, the heat is also
turning up in Bolingbrook. The winter weather has cleared and
volunteers amassed, continuing the search for the young mother, Stacy
Peterson, who has been missing now almost six months. New coordinated
training efforts provide efficient training for volunteers, teaching
them more effective search methods to utilize in the areas where
Stacy´s body might be located. With renewed vigor, and supported by
the tireless efforts of Stacy´s sister, Cassandra Cales, and Stacy´s
friend, Roy Taylor, the volunteers are determined in their quest, and

previously thought.

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say beaches in San Diego
County that were closed after a deadly shark attack will reopen Monday.

At least eight miles of sea front were closed to swimmers over the
weekend after Friday's attack. Retired veterinarian David Martin died
after he was bitten in the legs by a shark thought to have been a
great white.

There has been no sign of the shark since the attack on the
66-year-old triathlete.

Martin's oldest son, Jeff, told reporters Sunday his father loved
night diving and other sea activities. The son says no one in the
family ever would have imagined a shark attack in Solana Beach.

It was the first such attack in San Diego County since 1994.

Could there be a calculated, cross-country plot to kill young college
men, including some in Minnesota? It seems a little hard to believe,
but two New York detectives say they can prove it.
