Proteus (like other brainboxes) is a holdover from the technology of the 1990's. Not that that is a bad thing - I still use my Zygon brainbox after all these years. A primary advantage is the integration of the light goggles with some canned programs. Most brainboxes offer some sort of way to customize programs and write a limited number of new ones.
Recently my brainbox has taken a backseat to a set of homebuilt goggles using 4 colors (switchable) of high output LEDs and a battery/AC operated audiostrobe decoder hooked up to my iPod. The lights are brighter, colors selectable and I can build the applications in BWGEN or other app, mix with music and load through iTunes. Way smaller too.
