Don't kid yourself, your behavior is influenced everyday by subliminals you encounter all day long. They are on TV, in print, movies, radio, background music - everywhere. It is likely that your friend's habit was helped along by subliminals at many points in his development.
Hypnosis is also misunderstood and people believe that you cannot be forced to do something that you would not normally do while in trance. This is true if you knew you were going to be hypnotized, like in a stage show or often at a therapy session. Milton Erikson could put peope in trance with a handshake or a touch (actually not hard if you practice it). These people never knew that they were going to be put in trance and could be suggested to do anything he pleased. I have seen people conditioned that just touching a cirgaratte removed any urges and they forgot that they wanted one.
Your friend knows what smoking can do to you. You'd have to be a moron to to... and he lives the effects daily. He just hasn't reached the point where the pain of smoking is worse than the perceived pain of quitting. For some it never is - walk past the smoking area of a hospital and see how many of the smokers are towing oxygen canisters with them.
Take care of yourself and be an example. Be there if they ask for your help as well.
