I believe what you are expereincing is called Tinnitus. It's also
called "ringing of the ears". The most common caude is being exposed
to too loud a noise. (I've had it since returning from Viet Nam; very
common problem for those serving in combat).
It's also become common amoung the younger set after prolonged
exposure to loud music or an excessively noisy work environment
without ear protection; but there are many other reasons. Disease,
medications, head injury, etc.
Can be a ringing, hissing or beating sound in the head. Not much you
can do about it as there is no known cure. From what I've read, they
believe it either is caused by disorders of the inner ear or acoustic
nerve, or "crosstalk" in the brain.
The good thing is, it doesn't seem to get worse as you age. For me,
it's no louder today that it was when I retuned back in 1970.
