Hi,

My name is MaryAnn, I am a new member of boss back ocd.  My 18 year old daughter has been diagnosised with OCD, Social Phiobia and mildly bi-polar.  I am new at all this and welcome any advice and support.

Thanks,

Boardwalk for $500? In 2007? Ha!

Hi MaryAnn,

You say your daughter was just diagnosed with OCD, social phobia and a
little bi-polar... Do you know how long before this she has been
dealing with these issues?

I'll admit that I do not know much at all about bi-polar... but my son
has OCD and social phobia - they often go hand-in-hand.

What treatments are you getting for the OCD & social phobia? My son
is 14yo and was diagnosed less than a year ago (but the OCD had been
there for a while) and is doing great now.

Be hopeful! I know when this first happens that is easier said than
done... but with the right treatment, hardwork and support your
daughter can get better. Is your daughter still in high school?

Hind sight is 20/20 they say.  I look back now and see that she has had the social phobia most of her life and I feel the OCD is present to help her get through the social phobia.  She just graduated from high school finishing out as a home student have her 3rd hospitalization this year for depression and attempt suicide.

What has helped your son?

It may be opposite of what you say... it may be the social phobia that
has "helped" her with the OCD. Scientists believe and have evidence
that OCD is genetic and has a physiological cause - not enough
serotonin in the brain. So, I don't think people get OCD in reaction
to something external (although external things can trigger it).

The OCD is emotionally painful for those who suffer and many try very
hard and are very effective at hiding their symptoms for a long long time.

My son has been treated with cognitive behavior therapy and exposure
response prevention (cbt / erp) - and it really does work! It takes a
lot of work for the sufferer of OCD and lots of support from family.
But I believe in it. And, if you look into it at all you will find
that it is the only treatment with any kind of real evidence of
effectiveness.

He has pretty well tackled the OCD and is mostly symptom free and we
are now working mostly on the social phobia (same treatment).

You need to find someone that really knows their stuff (treating OCD
with cbt / erp). Sometimes meds help during therapy... but in my
opininon, if you opt for meds-only or primarily-meds you will be
getting into a lifetime trap.

Hope this helps a little - if you want I can point you to some good
resources on the web. Be careful, though, there is a lot of
misinformation and what I call "snake-oil" medicine out there.

My son's symptoms actually started back in 1st grade but we didn't
realize what was going on. Just a phase we thought and it did seem to
pass. Then at the beginning of 8th grade... crash!
