David,

Wow! I had a whole different answer for "J", but that video clip says a whole
lot more than, I feel, anyone of us could.

I am running trying to get ready for a flight, but, actually had to watch the
entire clip.

Awesomely Inspiring! Thank you, David. And a HUGE THANK YOU to Dustin Carter.

BFL'ingly yours,

Hey Jeff...

Welcome to the club and back to BFL ! Sorry it took a couple days to
approve you.. I had to set even the membership and posts
to "moderated" to avoid all the spamming.

But you're here now and we're looking forward to hearing about your
progress. It's been very quiet here, but I'm hoping with the New Year
approaching, that will so change.

Best wishes to you and welcome back!

Just re-posting this from the East Coast BFL group so all can
appreciate Nicole's success and accomplishments. She has done a
fantabulous job! :)

Well we can add one more win to this string as I came out of Houston,
Texas with a second NGA pro figure win at the Natural Night of
Champions. What a great show with many new figure competitors,
therefore a bunch of new friends. Just an awesome group of gals when
you compete in the naturals, no doubt about it.

Here's a link to a pic from the show:

Hi Paul ...

Thanks for chiming in here... it has been verrrrrrrrrry quiet - and
I am guilty. I am supposed to run this show, but the only time I
have to log on is during the day and at work, that's a little
difficult!! :) When the season slows, I will be able to pay better
attention!

So that is awesome what you have accomplished! I am getting psyched
up (or trying to) to get my butt back into shape after doing just
about the very same thing. I did the Challenge in 1999 and stayed in
great shape till about 2002-2003... little by little I was losing
discipline and then, same thing - I moved, canceled the gym
membership and thought I would "work out at home"... and it didn't
take long till I was right back where I started and then some!

So you are a hero! hehe Seriously... that is just amazing what you
have accomplished and you are an inspiration!! All great advice and
a ton of encouragement.

Thanks so much for sharing, Paul. Please keep us posted and let us
know when you post your photos... or compete in your first body
building contest... ;)

Be well and be blessed!

Sharon :)

           Hi Doug,

My name is Paul. I'm 34 years old and live about an hour west of
Philly. I just finished my 12th week yesterday! I'm down 44 lbs. and
have the best muscle tone that I've ever had in my life! It was a
tough 12 weeks because I had several family birthdays, graduations,
vacations and my 10 year wedding anniversary during that time, but I
have been so focused on my goal, I can honestly say that I have done
my absolute best both eating and workouts.

Just to give you a little backround... I completed the challenge in
2003 and lost 54 lbs. I keep it off for about 2 years, but when I
was forced to drop my gym membership, I stopped working out and my
old eating habits creeped back in. Before I started this current
challenge back in June, I had gained it all back plus a few. I half-
hearted it a couple times back in the Spring, but never lasted more
than a couple weeks. I hit 239 on the scale and told myself "enough
is enough...there's no way I'm hitting 240!" That was the first
week of June and I've never looked back.

A big inspiration for me this time around, was meeting with the 2005
BFL UK winner. He lives in Wildwood, NJ for the summer and offers
personal training. I met with him for about an hour and a half and
he helped me tweak my workouts and had good nutritional advise. But
the biggest help was just to see and talk to someone who lives BFL
everyday and has gone on to win many bodybuilding competitions since
his challenge. Every time I felt like cheating, I would just picture
the results he has seen and remind myself that I can do the same
thing.

Keeping a journal was another big help for me this time. It was hard
because I've never been good at that type of thing, but has really
been an invaluable tool for me. Each morning before my workout, I
would look at the previous week and mentaly focus on beating it,
even if it was only lifting 5 more pounds or going 1/10 of a mile
further. It has really been key for me to surpass the results I saw
a few years ago. Even though I'm still about 14 lbs heavier than I
was at the end of my last challenge, my muscle tone is far better
and I know I'm getting more out of my workouts than I did before.

Eating for me has always been the easy part. There are so many good
recipes in the "Eating for Life" book, that it's never been hard to
find meals that the entire family can enjoy. I also happen to really
like the Myoplex shakes, so that has always made a convenient, no
thought, well balanced meal replacement for me. The first couple
weeks are the hardest, because I would still get a little hungry at
times, but once the first few weeks are over, your body gets
conditioned to the smaller meals. Now, I have a hard time finishing
even a BFL portion size. It sounds like you are getting to that
point too.

So, I'm still going. I still want to lose 5-10 more lbs. of fat and
build some additional muscle. My goal is to get the six pack I've
never had. I am more determined than every to get there and stay
there! My sixth child is on the way and I want to make sure that I'm
doing everything I can to ensure that I will always be there for
them and hopefully be an inspiration to them, to always live a
healthy lifestyle. I'll post some before and after pics soon.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I joined this group a
while ago, but it's been really quiet. Reading your post finally
motivated me to respond.

Keep up the good work! You can do it!!

God bless,
Paul

Ditto what George said, Joe... I agree with all he said.

I think it IS possible to do well, whether you're doing BFL or just a
workout regimen of your own, with or without supplements. However, I
do find it hard to eat, let alone prepare, 5-6 food meals a day and not
get bored or end up skipping a few. The shakes are probably the one
thing I would use, if nothing else.

I also agree that creatine, glutamine, HMB, amino acids, fatty acids,
etc are all great supplements... but are they necessary? eeehhhh......
I don't think so. I know they help - that I KNOW - but I think you can
still have good results and maintenance without them. It might take a
little more work and discipline, but it would keep us on our toes! :)

Hope all is well, my friend!

Joe,

Do we really need to… Not likely.

Would we really want to… For me, it seems a good thing.

The meal replacement shakes are convenient, low fat foods. The current food
processing seems to strip the nutrients from the foods (and then sell them
back to us as vitamins). Our soil is pushed to grow more in less space
also, in my humble opinion, reducing the nutrient value in even the fresh
foods.

It’s hard to measure our nutritional intake unless we are able to specify
the nutrients in a supplement.

On the other hand…

If you are speaking about other supplements that enhance muscle growth
beyond normal exercise, these supplements only work (again, IMHO) while you
are taking them. Any benefit is NOT made part of one’s permanent structure.
These types of supplements, however, can be used to enhance muscle growth
and help regenerate new muscle tissue faster, and when the supplements are
discontinued, if the exercises continue, there will likely be some residual
benefit of that supplement. (eg, creatine)

I like the muscle puffiness of the extra supplements and the added burst of
strength, but, I don’t like the unknowns in taking them over the long term.

Good to hear from you,

George

Samantha,

I hope you don't mind, but, I will share my response with a couple of other
BFL groups that have some new members that might be able to also gain some
insight and understanding of the BFL program.

Unfortunately, in order for me to get a better view the effectiveness of
your specific nutrition and exercise, I would need to understand where you
are and where you are trying to go with your mind and body sculpting.

Generally speaking, however, and as related to BFL guidelines, I can provide
this insight (AKA personal opinion) as to your note.

You are not clear on exercise intensity. Exercises should be
brief, but intense.

Cardio back to back with resistance can short circuit muscle
regeneration (building) efforts.

Diet seems really, really small portioned to me, but I do not
know your sizes.

Plus, I don't know what sultanas are. :-)

It appears you have a reasonable balance of protein and good carbs most of
the meals.

Try to include protein at every meal (e.g.: yogurt, cottage cheese & banana)

I would think you would want to make your goals would more specific.

Lose fat and gain muscle sounds nice, but doesn't help provide
the measuring stick.

And, losing 2cm all around is a bit vague.

I want to go from 565 pounds to 135 pounds, or, a waist of 72"
to 19.5" might be more precise.

Define your reasons for doing this. What is your "why" for jumping into
BFL?

So, all-in-all, what you defined is likely a reasonable diet and reasonable
exercise, but there are lots of unknowns and it is not in accordance with
the Body-for-LIFE program. BFL starts with the mind, then nutrition, then
the muscles. You need to have your "why", you need to change your thinking
patterns to always be looking for the silver lining in all of life, and you
need to develop the sense of sharing your knowledge with the entire world.
With these elements, you can see that BFL is much MORE than simply a diet
and exercise program. It is a way of life, a new lifestyle.

BFL suggests 6 days of exercise with alternating cardio and resistance. On
resistance days, alternate upper and lower body focus working from the
larger muscle groups to the smaller muscle groups. E.g.: Chest, shoulders,
upper back, triceps, and then biceps. Cardio is to be brief but intense.
All exercises are to follow high intensity interval training ("HIIT")
guidelines unless you are medically unable to do that. Other than HIIT may
require longer exercise efforts. Change up your exercise so your body does
not get too comfortable with the activity. E.g.: switch from chest presses
to dumbbell flies. For nutrition, BFL is to pack in 6 healthy meals
consisting of a reasonable balance of protein & carbs with minimal fat.

The key is to keep everything in balance and to focus on progress, not
perfection. If you fall off track (as I most certainly have done in these
last 8 months), it is not a reason to throw in the towel, but, in keeping
with the positive mindset, find the good that happened (E.g.: learn what did
NOT work for you), and then, move forward; the same as you MUST do in life.

IMHO, BFL transforms the entire person, not just the body. And, in my
experience, it has been a total transformation for the better. Even when
sliding off the proper nutrition and exercise, having the positive mindset
allows a wonderful view on life.

Happy BFL'ing,

George

Let me know if that's reasonable.
My goal is to lose fat and build muscle. I want to lost about 2cm
all round.

Just for the record, folks - I have set joining the club and also
posting for new memebers to "moderated" since we had a ton of people
joining just to spam. Setting only the posts to moderated was not
enough - it was totally out of hand. I would 100 messages awaiting
approval in one day! ALL SPAM! But I would have to sift through them
all so I didn't delete any real posts.

So... if anyone is looking to join genuinely, please - we'd love to
have you. But if you're looking to join to SPAM, I won't risk even
approving you if you don't have a profile or if you try to join
anonymously.

I am only doing this for the sake of the board and the good folks here -
I don't want it to turn into a SPAM board like a lot have done in the
past.

Thanks folks!

Hey Gang !

George... I think we should e-mail that article to our spouses and tell
them it's all for our health... hehe

Welcome to the new folks... Scott and "Parker" .. I got your short note
when you joined, but then realized you didn't have anything in your
profile, and I forgot your name that fast. I did rememeber though that
you were re-starting your Challenge, so I hope that is going well!!
Best wishes to both of you and welcome to the club!

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the weather so far. The dog
days are yet to come! UGH! :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

BFL'ers,

I'm trying to figure out how I can make this one of our HIIT exercise
routines, but, how is someone pushing 50 supposed to repeat levels 6, 7, 8,
& 9 intensities FOUR times BEFORE then hitting my "10". Woooo hooo!

Oh! Here's the reference site for the exercise(s) in question. Only those
over 18 and/or married should try these hit this link.

http://www.ediets.com/news/article.cfm?code=24432&cmi=2427971

Hmmm... Now... I wonder if THAT is part of the reason I gained my weight
back these lase couple of months. - - - NOT!!! ;)

Jeeze! It must be Friday! Have a great weekend, everyone.

Dreaming of still more creative cardio exercises, I remain...

BFL'ingly yours,
George

Hi again gang!

Any of you who know me at all, know that I am an animal nut. My
friends and family have fallen victim to my recent obsession with the
little polar bear baby, Knut, in Germany. :) My day is just not
complete until I've visited the RBB (German) website for my daily
dose of "Knuteness"! hehe (In case you're interested:
http://www.rbb-online.de/_/knut/index_jsp/activeid=3802.html)

Whether you're a Knut fan or not, if you watch any of the videos on
RBB, you will have to admit that the effort put forth by his "Dad",
Thomas Dörflein, is admirable, to say the least. That said, one of
the girls I've met online, who is from Germany, has started a
petition to nominate Thomas Dörflein for "The Order of Merit of the
Federal Republic of Germany"... or the "Bundesverdienstkreuz" in her
language. :) I told her I'd make my best effort here in the US to
get some signatures.

I've pasted the links below - one to sign the petition and the second
is more information on the award, if you're curious. There's a brief
description below of what the award entails also. It would be nice
for him to be recognized in his own country, as he is a hero to
everyone there and a lot of us here! I know I would love to have his
job, although I'm sure it's not as easy or always as pleasant as it
appears.. waking up at 3am to a screaming, poopy baby polar bear
would NOT be fun.. hehe

Anyway - this is the petition link... IGNORE THE 2nd PAGE which asks
for a donation - you DO NOT need to make a donation to sign the
petition and all information is secure - not sold or shared, so you
WILL NOT get junkmail in the future.

Petition Link:

Information on the award & link to further info:

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany was instituted
in 1951 by Federal President Theodor Heuss. It is the only honour
that may be awarded in all fields of endeavour and is the highest
tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals for
services to the nation.
The Order of Merit may be awarded to Germans as well as foreigners
for achievements in the political, economic, social or intellectual
realm and for all kinds of outstanding services to the nation in the
field of social, charitable or philanthropic work. No pecuniary
(monetary) reward is attached.

Hey Gang...

I haven't posted at all lately, and I should since I am supposed to
be the moderator, huh?! :)

BFL has not been a big part of my life lately, I'm sad to say ...
there have been so many crises in my family since Thanksgiving of '05
that it just seems like the idea of a normal schedule and routine are
a dream! I would love to have a "routine" again! hehe Someday...
I will get there, I am determined.. hehe I am trying to just work
around any crazy schedule issues and make it work, not wait for the
perfect scenario.

For anyone looking to become a member of our club, please don't think
I was trying to exclude anyone by making membership approval
necessary, but I was getting literally 100's of spam posts and it was
getting out of hand. I had the posts set to need approval, but I
finally made it so no one can even become a member without
approval.. no memebership, you can't post.. so - hopefully that
alleviates that problem!

I hope everyone is doing well. There hasn't been much action here at
all, and like I said, I accept the blame for that because I haven't
encouraged any action either!

Please chime in and let us know how you're doing... if you're doing a
Challenge or just beginning, please feel free to get the conversation
rolling! I promise to try to check in more frequently and maybe even
get back to posting my "Daily Inspiration" quotes that I used to post
each day!

Be well gang!

Sharon :)

Given this article, I suppose some of my backward sliding on the scale could be
considered healthy? :) ...Maybe just in lesser quantities. LOL Research can

Hi Michelle..

Nothing like a belated welcome! I am supposed to manage this group but
sometimes it gets away from me and I don't get back here for months.
Life has a way of doing that, huh?! :)

Anyway - welcome and hope you're having success on the Challenge!

I am in PA too, a migrant from NJ. :)

Have a great weekend and best wishes with your challenge!

Somehow, this response to a someone's request bounced back to me, so I'll
re-post it through my BFL groups. I hope the requester eventually gets my
reply. :)

Hmmm... Let they amongst us, that have not ever felt this way cast the
first little white lie.

Now, I've never given birth, personally, to a baby, but, I can relate to the
ups and downs of the lifestyle changes. I know very much what you describe,
but my shifts come and go either very quickly (like a day), or can linger
for weeks. Here are a couple of my views on some of the factors that cause
that fitness disease I call "lackamojo".

1) Physical exhaustion. You mention being a new mom. I don't know how new,
but your body may still be working hard on recovering from the miracle of
birth. Too much exercise may be the culprit here. You might need to ease
back on the effort until you build the endurance.

2) Meal timing and appropriate nutrition. Together with the fitness effort,
you need to be sure to refuel your body with sufficient protein and carbs.
It's not part of BFL to count calories, but, try to target >40% protein,
>40% carbs, and <20% fat in each meal. Include good fiber for the carbs and
keep the sodium as low as you can go.

3) Proper hydration. I have personally found that when I am less hydrated,
my blood pressure seems to be much higher. When my BP rises, my motivation
seems to leave and that feeling of fatigue sets in, BIG TIME.

4) Mental resolve. a) Recall that reason for crossing the abyss - make sure
it is rock solid. b) Develop your future vision - know in your mind what
you will look like and feel like in the future. c) Keep the positive
outlook - continuously look for the silver lining, think lesson learned and
NOT failure. d) Compliment banking - save and recall the positive comments
others provide about you and your progress, use it as strength to get past
the dry times. e) Talk it up - make the public commitment to improve, keep
health and fitness in the forefront of your mind. f) Measure progress -
keep track of every dimension of your body: medical, sizes, tape measures,
pictures, everything! g) Not perfection - realize we are not perfect and we
will slip off track from time to time; accept the imperfection and look for
ways to stop the mistakes & distractions from re-occurring.

5) Just Do It. Schedule the time and make it happen. Sometimes we simply
do NOT feel like performing our workouts. It is at this time that you can
decide to take it a bit easier, but then, after you get started, the
motivation sometimes kicks back in and gets you going strong again. Fake it
'til you make it.

6) Reach out for help. I like to use and expression that I stole from Home
Depot advertising... "You can do it, we can help!" Sometimes we forget we
are part of a community and we simply need a helping hand. At the same
time, be available to help others through rough times, too. I think this is
what Bill Phillips had referred to as the law of reciprocation. The whole
world can do better if we all realize helping others is how we all benefit.

By the way, I still work out at home and have had 8 children. I started
with an exercycle and dumbbells 9/15/2003 and still have and use that
equipment. I have expanded with more fitness toys, but, I often return back
to those basics.

Hoping this helps, I remain, focusing on...

Progress, not perfection!
George

Hi Michelle,

Welcome!

Yes, I'm a fellow believer in BFL with lots of success stories. I've not
fallen off the BFL wagon completely, but lets just say I'm slouched over the
wheel a bit. I'm in need of a quick attitude and scheduling adjustment, and
I should be back on track.

I too have a place in South Eastern PA. I am not often there, but, every
once in a while when the stars and moon line up... I'm here.

Don't forget to share your progress with us, as that is what life is all
about.

Have a BeautiFuL evening,
George

Hi gang!

Over the last couple of months, I would say that I averaged about 50% of the
time, maybe even less, than the time I would ordinarily spend working out.
Poor eating choices and less than stellar fitness efforts have led to the
return of that that frumpy body and expanding waist line.

I'm still running ragged on a project that has me mentally fatigued and I've
been getting up later, often skipping my early workout, providing less than
a "10" effort, making excuses upon excuses. I was feeling a bit
discouraged, as to how much I have slipped back into some bad, easy, habits
during these last couple of months when someone forwarded me this picture.

This before and after picture of Arnold did put a smile on my face, but, it
also acts as a great reminder of the need for daily re-dedication of our
health and fitness commitments.

I, myself, am about to try and recharge my BFL batteries and get back to the
proper nutrition and workout. ...Maybe even strike up some photos for an
official challenge.

My "why" for crossing the abyss has not changed, but, somehow I let life get
in the way of living a healthier life. Someday, when I can reflect over
what has happened to knock me so far off course, I'll try and share that,
maybe to help another from stepping on that slippery, well greased slope
that returns to many of my bad habits.

I'm still reading all the postings, so keep up the great effort everyone.

Meandering back to a better body and the healthy lifestyle, I remain...

Rebuilding my Body for LIFE,
George

Just a quick note to thank everyone for your support of our new Body-
for-Life Tips and Tricks newsletter. Since posting the original
note hundreds of people have dropped by to sign up.

A lot of effort went into creating a newsletter that will inform and
inspire you as you progress with the program, right down to
a "Special Issue" that arrives 12 weeks after you signup to
congratulate you on finishing the challenge, and of course
encouraging you to begin setting new goals for your next challenge
right away!

The newsletter is free, if you haven't signed up yet you can do so
here: http://www.BodyForLifeCoach.com Just wait for the little
window to slide in 5 seconds after you get there.

Enjoy.
