I find that the trick to burning fat is to not eat immediately before a
workout, or immediately after. With my schedule (24 hours on duty, 2 hours off,
24 on, 22 off) I have to plan my workouts for different times of the day. At
one job it has to be in the afternoon, then I workout the next morning before
the second job, then again the next morning before going home. The idea of
working out on an empty stomach can work at any time of day. Ultimately, you
need to find a time that works for you, and that you will consistantly manage to
push yourself.
