ICT to enhance the provision of community care - SIHI 2008 Conferenc   Message List

Registration is now open for the Southern Institute for Health Informatics 10th Annual Conference

Thursday 9th October 2008, Leatherhead

After nine tremendously successful SIHI conferences, we are holding this year's event in Leatherhead on Thursday 9th October and would like to invite you to participate. The venue will be Leatherhead Food International (LFI), conveniently close to the railway station and within easy access of the M25.

The theme is the way that information and communication technologies (ICT) can enhance the provision of community care services.

More and more health care is being delivered in community settings, whether this is in local health centres, GP practices or in the patient's home. The demands are such that information about the patient and the services for them frequently need to be shared, up-to-date, accessible from many locations and patient-centred.

More and more people and organisations are involved in the delivery of that care, including GPs and their staff, community health services provided by PCTs, outreach services provided by NHS acute organisations, local authorities, private sector suppliers (including home monitoring services, pharmacies, social care providers), the patients themselves, the patients' families and friends, etc.

Increasingly there is a need to "join up" care in order to provide the patient with the best possible service. Of course, providing services at lower cost and with demonstrable effectiveness is always an issue.

The keynote speakers at the conference will be:

- Sean Riddell, Managing Director, EMIS Group Ltd, on healthcare interoperability
- Prof James Barlow, Imperial College London, on lessons for implementation and sustainability of services
- Prof Jeremy Wyatt, Director of the Health Informatics Centre, University of Dundee, on the evidence base

Among the other speakers will be a series of "elevator pitches" from companies describing their services - against the clock!

Who should attend?

The conference is aimed at social care managers, service providers, clinicians of all types, health service managers, system developers and integrators, and patient representatives. Academics with research or teaching interests in the above areas will also find plenty to interest them.

Registration

The cost of early registration (bookings made before 1st September) is only £85 (with discounts for multiple attendees from the same organisation), which includes lunch.

Infomart

The conference also features an "Infomart". The Infomart is an informal information marketplace area that allows vendors and researchers a low cost method of meeting people and exchanging information.
