Re: [bmis-members] Bluetooth / WLAN

Hi Colin

I replied to this question from the HL7 meetings in San Antonio earlier
in the month - but it appears not to have made its way to the intended
recipients. So, with apologies if you've already seen my response:

Hi Colin,

At the general HI level then there is ISO TR 21730 (Health informatics -
Use of mobile wireless communication and computing technology in
healthcare facilities - Recommendations for the management of
electromagnetic interference with medical devices). Despite it's title
it includes some general consideration of the issues.

There is also a very much more specific publication related to medical
devices (IEEE 11073-00101 - "Health informatics - Point-of-care medical
device communication - Technical report - Guidelines for the use of RF
wireless technology") - though it has applicability outside the US some
of the spectrum issues (e.g. WMTS) are specific to that market.

Work is underway in IEC SC62A JWG7 to define policies for the management
of medical devices in the context of IT networks (including wireless
co-existence). I'm sitting in one of their meetings as I write this -
there will not be anything published inside 6 months!

I'd start with 21730 ...

Hope this helps - best regards,

Melvin.
