True to its theme, 'Challenging boundaries', at this year's HC Event you'll be able to catch up on today's most important developments in healthcare informatics, for example:
1. The National Programme for IT: the way forward
A number of eminent organisations have recently published their views on changes that should be made to England's National Programme for IT to ensure it succeeds. All are passionate about providing the systems that the NHS so urgently needs to provide high-quality clinical care in the 21st century. The BCS Health Informatics Forum is one of those groups.
This conference session provides leading individuals and organisations involved in this debate with a platform to air their views and it offers you the opportunity to question panellists and others on those views. We may find that there is more that unites us than divides us.
2. Major advances in overcoming the barriers to using telecare technologies for managing chronic-diseases, monitoring the health of older people and proactive personal health and fitness.
David Whitlinger, Chairman of the Continua Health Alliance and Director of Healthcare Device Standards and Interoperability, Intel Corporation, will present the work of the Continua Health Alliance, one of the world's largest industry alliances, which is establishing international connectivity standards for telemonitoring devices and communications systems.
Also, Intel IT Europe Flex Services will be launching its newest product for the healthcare market, and leading providers in home and physiological telemonitoring will be exhibiting.
3. Changing mindsets
Clinicians at the frontline of healthcare delivery are wary of IT-driven projects; too often the answers to the question 'What's in it for me?' have negative connotations. Consultant vascular surgeon and computer scientist Simon Dodds offers a pragmatic way through resistance to change, founded not only on his personal experience but also on his two-year study of the human aspects of the change process.
Many more new ideas, breakthroughs and solutions are being presented at HC this year at both the conference and the exhibition.
The challenges of change are complex, varied and fast moving. Invest some time away from your desk this year to keep up to date: it could save you and your organisation a great deal of effort, time and money.
Details of the HC2007 Conference, including booking forms, may be found at www.health-informatics.org and more about the Exhibition may be found at www.healthcare-computing.co.uk
HC2007 will be at Harrogate International Centre, 19-21 March 2007. It is the premier event for healthcare informatics and the most comprehensive in Europe.
